  • Where can I find information on navigating the entire length of the Mississippi river?

I'm working on a story idea and could use some reference information. If you were to start at Lake Itasca, the mouth of the river, and navigate down it all the way to the gulf of Mexico, what would the journey be like? How long would it take? What obstacles would you encounter? Etc., etc., etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • What happens to the energy in a light bulb if it is broken?

To be more specific, if you threw a rock at a light bulb and shattered the bulb and filament, what happens to the energy the bulb was emitting? Obviously the light and thermal energy is was giving off would cease the moment the filament was shattered, but what happens to the electrical energy?

Does it retreat back into the power line? Is it cut off and somehow dissipate into the surrounding air?

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • How can I find out all of the stock I own in different companies?

My parents and grandparents bought and maintained stock for me when I was a young child up until I turned 18. Every year when I do taxes they send me forms that they have received from these companies so that I can account for them on my taxes. However, when asked for specifics about what companies I own stock in, how many there were, etc., my family could not provide me with the information I needed.

So, is there a way I can quickly find all the stock I own so I can make sure I'm covering my *** on taxes?

And while I'm at it, if I've missed stock information on prior tax returns, what can I do about it now to make sure I don't have IRS agents emptying my bank account due to fines and fees?

Thanks ahead of time for any help.

  • Why is Vista popping up with the 'Open With' dialog box for every program?

Every file, including .exe files, now pop up with the dialog box that asks you to select which program you'd like to open the file with.

For some strange reason, it seems that with some programs if I right-click and run as administrator while others will not. I shut off the Vista UAC from day one and have never turned it on. And yes, it is still off.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • What's the best way to transport a dog from Michigan to Alaska?

My brother moved to Alaska recently and I've been caring for his pitbull-mastiff mix. I plan on moving myself within the next few months and as I already have a (large) dog of my own I need to find a way to get my brother's dog back to him.

I'm currently located in Michigan and that's where the dog would be sent from. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Where can I find quality Zen Cart templates?

I've looked around a little and did some research, a lot of the sites are subsidiary sites of templatemonster.com which users typically recommend NOT using due to their horrendous coding.

Anyone have a link or info about a website or company that does quality, solid, good-looking and well coded templates for Zen Cart?

  • How do I create a parallax background that follows your cursor movement in Flash CS4/ActionScript 3.0?

I've created the parallax movie clip and it's working perfectly. I just need to know how to code it in AS3 so that the movie clip follows the mouse cursor around as a user moves the cursor around the stage.

Here's a perfect example of the effect I'm trying to achieve.

  • Mysterious fuel issue with '97 Saab 900S?

Basically the car acts as if it's starving for fuel when it's idle or near idle RPM's.

    Some additional info:

-Is the worst in the morning or when car has not been running for quite some time. 90% of the time it will sputter, sometimes it will stall out. 10% of the time it will start up and idle normally

-Also happens at stop lights/signs/anywhere I have to stop the car or slow it to around 20mph or lower. Have stalled it twice trying to accelerate from a stop sign.

-Typically when I try to accelerate after stopping the car will slowly accelerate (0-20mph in about 5 seconds) and then pick up and act normal.

-While driving 30mph or more, car acts fine. No sputtering or stalling.

-There is no black smoke coming from the exhaust (indicating an injector that's stuck open)

    ---

So far I've done the following to try and remedy the problem:

-Changed the fuel filter...Seemed to help moderately

-Added two bottles of fuel injector cleaner, plan on adding another soon. Again, both seemed to help moderately.

-I hope it's not a fuel pump and so far it doesn't seem to be indicated as the car drives normal at higher speeds and aside from sputtering/occasional stalling it runs fine.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Cheers.

  • How can I squeeze the most money out of my busted car?

I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand AM GT in fair condition. I bought it used in 2002 and it's run well and reliably ever since, requiring very little maintenance.

Sadly the engine got overheated a bit too much today and it appears as if either the head gasket has blown or the intake manifold is shot. Either way, it's an expensive fix that would equal out to nearly the Blue Book estimated value of the car to repair.

What can I do to get the most dollar out of my car? Should I sell it to a junkyard? Disassemble its pieces and eBay away? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Why does my engine miss? Grand Am GT (2000) w/ 3400 SFI V6 engine...Ram Air.?

Nearly every time I start my car the engine will miss for several minutes before evening out and working normally. You can feel the car vibrating slightly and hear the cylinder missing. After driving for a short period of time (30 secs - 4 mins) it evens out and works normally.

Looking for some simple reasons/causes this could be happening and cheap/easy solutions I could attempt before delving too deeply into my wallet. I know very little about car mechanical work so please forgive my ignorance and keep it simple.

Basically, I'm asking if there's any common causes or reasons why this could be happening and any common fixes to try to fix it. Thanks ahead of time.

  • Where can I find a comprehensive and (important part) printable reference for ActionScript 3.0?

Cracking into Flash CS4 after a few years away from Flash and becoming increasingly frustrated with AS3. Was hoping someone could point me to a printable reference. Ideally I'm looking for something as comprehensive as the Adobe Language and Components reference (http://livedocs.adobe.com/flash/9.0/ActionScriptLa... in a printable version...Page quantity not an issue.

BTW, before anyone responds with "Why not get the downloadable version of the Adobe reference and print that?", I refuse to go through hundreds of individual HTML files and print each one individually.

    Thanks ahead of time.

  • What Digital Pen/Tablet Monitor for a PC would you recommend for digital illustration purposes?

I've been doing some research and from what I can tell it seems like a pretty competitive, though small, corner of the graphic design and illustration market. I haven't been able to find much for reviews or feedback on any of the products I've been researching, though.

I'm interested in picking one up for several reasons:

a.) I love to sketch/draw/illustrate, among other things.

b.) I'm sick of using a digital tablet to do digital illustrations

c.) I am soon to be a graphic design major and figure it's something I could probably use anyway

So I'm looking for something mid-range price-wise (I know they can be pretty pricey). It doesn't have to be top of the line but it can't be a bottom-feeder, either.

Looking forward to hearing some advice. Thanks ahead of time!

  • Is it possible to use both a SATA and an IDE hard drive in a RAID setup?

I have a system with a SATA HD as it's primary but I also have two IDE HD's from an older system that I'd like to cannabilize and integrate into the new system. Is it possible to combine the three into a RAID setup (RAID 1 / Striped Data setup preferred)?

  • What do I do if, after formatting my hard drive, my computer doesn't recognize my hard drive?

Gateway GT5678 System, Western Digital SATA Caviar HD, Windows Vista (64-bit) OS.

I formatted the HD last night due to what appeared to be numerous registry errors within Vista. This is a relatively new system and this is the first time I've attempted wiping the HD and re-installing Vista.

I attempted doing a fresh install from both a Windows XP DVD and a Vista DVD. Neither had any effect. I discovered that the SATA DVD drive that is installed was not reading the DVDs.

I then cannabilized a PATA DVD drive from an older system and installed it in the new system. After doing this the Vista DVD boots up fine. It begins the installation, but at the point at which you need to select a drive or partition to install to, there are no drives listed.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.
