Horse stable flooring/base?
We have recently moved into a rental property on which we can now keep our horses. The property is not set up for horses, but has the basics to be able to keep them happily.
There is a 5xm wide by 10xm long shed which we have split in half and converted into 2x stables. At the moment it is just walk in/walk out, but before winter arrives I would like to maybe put doors on them to keep my two main competition horses in overnight.
My first question is - the base, there is none, just the sand that surrounds the property. As this is a rental, we d prefer to make as little changes to the property as possible, such as concreting the stable floors. The sand here is very thick as we live quite close to the beach, so although the bedding is soft enough, without having a hard base beneath, would this cause any problems? I am aware of the hygiene factor and drainage and am aware they would need to be thoroughly cleaned daily, but besides this what other issues may arise?
Another worry I had was the roof of the stables, they seem quite low in my opinion, especially if my horses were to lie down in them and I ve a feeling it will need to be raised - what are your reccomendations for how high a stable roof should be?
Thankyou for the help!
2 AnswersHorses5 years agoShow name for sweet filly.?
I have just bought a very sweet chestnut Tb filly and looking for a show name for her. Her stable name is going to be Cara (because I'm obsessed with Cara Delevingne) and I'd like her show name to include the word "London" or "England" in it :) but all suggestions will be taken!
Thankyou!
5 AnswersHorses6 years agoBest tampon for the first time?
So I've had my period for about a year now and just recently it's started to become heavier and pads are not cutting it anymore (especially with the sports I do).
I've tried "mini tampons" without the applications, but no matter how hard I try I can't get them in.
At first I thought my vagina was too small, but I can get my middle finger fully in, although it's still tight and not the most comfortable it gets in and out fine, although I normally need either some spit or blood to make it easier! Yuck!
So I can get my fingers in but when I try with the tampon I can hardly even get the tip in and when I try pull it out it's the most painful thing ever!
Any tips for inserting, things I can do to the tampon to make it easier? Or certain tampons that will help (applicators?).
Please bear in mind I am 15 so I don't want to go overboard with certain things, but I'm also a beginner and I still don't really know how to put them in...
3 AnswersWomen's Health7 years agoCold pressed virgin coconut oil?
So I have bought some of the "Bella terra" cold pressed organic virgin coconut oil.
I was planning on using it as a hoof dressing for my horse, but as it is a kind of 'paste' like consistency is it better to let it liquefy or does it not matter? Poking my finger in I can tell it will go on his hooves very easily and smells amazing!
I've also heard of people feeding their horse this stuff too? I feed my horse copra coolstance so I'm very pleased with all the ravings of coconut, but just interested on what anyone else uses this amazing product for with their horses/pets.
Any tips of preferences I would love to hear as it's my first time trying this on his hooves :)
2 AnswersHorses7 years agoHelp with making a movie on IMovie?
For a school project I'm making a documentary type thing on thoroughbred horses, I'm using imovie on my ipad air and just wondering if anyone has any experience, I'm mostly looking for a way (an app or something) to change the text and get better looking text, preferably for free.
Any other apps that can add some good effects and just make the video better overall would be appreciated.
1 AnswerProgramming & Design7 years agoWant to get a lip ring (Australia)?
Hi, I'm turning 16 in a couple of months and thinking of getting a lip ring. I first wanted to know the legal age for WA without parental permission.
Secondly the pros and cons, I know they need to be kept very clean (I horse ride so I'm in dirt a lot) but I have a very strict face care routine. I also wanted to know, after a certain period of time are you able to take it out just for the day (12 hours or so) and then put it back in? And if I ever got sick of it would the hole close and approximately how long does this usually take?
And advice would be good, I have no other piercings besides my ears (which haven't had an earring in them for over 6 months and are still open..) so I'm kind of a newbie. Also if anyone could try describe how it feels getting it done? Thanks :)
2 AnswersOther - Skin & Body7 years agoBest therapy for stiff hindquarters?
My horse got an injury on one of his hind fetlocks about a year ago, obviously he was rested and was reluctant to naive freely while sore which has resulted in him becoming very stiff in his hindquarters.
He has been to the vets multiple times after the accident and she doesn't see anything immediately wrong with just he is stiff.
So what would you suggestion be for the FIRST form of therapy for him? He is back in work and I have been trying to loosen him up but I would like to try some alternatives to possibly speed this process up as he still struggles to track up in trot.
I'm choosing between either accupuncture or massage. I realise I need to ask the professionals their opinion but what do you think would be the most reasonable to call out first that would be most likely to sort the problem out? I am leaning towards accupuncture!
Any help is much appreciated :)
2 AnswersHorses7 years agoHelp gaining weight?
I have a really fast metabolism and I want gain some weight. I'm not deathly skinny but I would like a bit more meat on my legs which really struggling with.
I haven't been the healthiest eater as I normally skip breakfast and I'm not really hungry that much.
But I've read that you should increase your calories so I got a calorie counter and I average about 2000 a day, this is with me eating a lot (for me). I'm 15 years old and about 170cm tall so is this a normal amount?
I've tried to get more but this is with me eating as much as I can, I read somewhere that you should double your calories to gain weight but this seems impossible for me, I eat as often as possible and I still can't seem to get over 2000!- I have been pairing this with some exercise and strengthening too.
What are some suggestions to help me and certain foods with high calories or to help me gain weight?
Thanks
1 AnswerDiet & Fitness7 years agoCan't run assasins creed :(?
I got assasins creed a while ago but haven't had a chance to play it as when I try it is so laggy! I can't deal with it it's like running is the speed of a jog and his jacket flapping takes about 5 seconds! I'm not sure how to check if my computer can run it (if someone could please explain) I have an asus laptop with Radeon graphics. It runs all my other games fine and skyrim but I've recently noticed that when I try play skyrim without cheats when I get into a battle it's extremely laggy there too. I'm not sure if I've downloaded too much bad stuff onto it or it has viruses or it's just not big enough to run the games? If someone could please explain how I can check and find the system whatever's you need (sorry I'm a noob..) I definitely feel like it's slowed down a lot from when I first got it from all the crap I've got on there :/

2 AnswersHorses7 years agoExtremely skinny?
I've been skinny all my life, I'm 15 years old now and although I'm not nervous about my body I am aware that my legs are like twigs. It's not something I intentionally do I've just always been like this, but recently I put on a pair of pants it wear often and they were extremely baggy. I'm not sure if it's because I've been feeling stressed lately and a tad depressed (nothing major) or if it's my eating habits? I never have breakfast ( I'm just not hungry) and I'm fine with missing lunch unless I'm at school & have a fruit bar and maybe a sandwich and dinner I usually don't have much or rarely finish it, sometime I'm not even hungry and I just can't be bothered eating? I don't do it on purpose and I'm definitely not trying to get skinnier it's just natural to me and I just don't feel hungry Somedays...is this normal?
3 AnswersDiet & Fitness7 years agoJudge my conformation please :)?

3 AnswersHorses7 years agoCould you judge my conformation?
Sorry for the bad picture, I know I chopped off his hind area and I'm not dead on sideways and he is standing on a hill, I will get a better picture today.
But from what you can see could you judge my horses conformation, I can do it myself but if like to see what other people think that don't know me and don't have to be nice :)
I think he was croup high here as he has grown a lot and is 4 years old here.

4 AnswersHorses7 years agoRiding my performance horse less?
I have a problem. My 5 y/o tb injured his leg about a week ago and I had him resting, and now I've just brought him back into work and he came back better then he left. He was in full work before his injury and fit as we event, but he has some hock issues (minor arthritis) the vet has looked at and is not worried and we are treating it accordingly.
But I rode yesterday and besides the fact he was responding better too, his legs felt a lot more powerful and like he was REALLY using them. I think this is because of his break & that he gets ridden 6x a week, so how could I ride him or tire him out less & keep him fit for xc? Are there any good feeds that you reccomend to help performance horses, he needs high energy feeds as he gets oats and still calmer then a lot of horses.
1 AnswerHorses7 years agoProbiotics for horses and dress ulcers?
I asked a question earlier about my horse lying down and groaning at shows and everyone said it could be a stress ulcer forming or that it could cause one, and mentioned giving him probiotics leading up to the show? What probiotics do you use because I used to give my pony Yakult but is this bad?
Are there any other treatments or prevention tips etc? He is very well looked after at shows but he is still new to them so I think he stresses out a bit, he's getting better but I don't want any problems forming because of this, thanks :)
2 AnswersHorses7 years agoColic at competitions?
**i am not asking for anyone's rude opinions etc I know my horse and if something was serious I WILL get him to the vet.
Okay so I've owned my 5yr old Tb for about a year now and we do eventing. I've noticed at competitions on the first night camping he lies down and groans as if he has VERY slight colic. He still eats, manures, and performs exactly the same and he doesn't look at his stomach or show any signs of colic besides the groaning and once he is standing up carries on as if nothing is wrong. This only happens the first Night and the second he is perfectly fine. I have noticed when he is lying down at home he breathes a bit heavier then normal but not as much as at a show. So I'm thinking he may just be stressed the first night? But what are your reccomendations for looking after him if he is a bit stressed? I know they should have plenty of water which he does.
I'm not looking for people to tell me to stop competitions him, because he is fine and shows no other signs and doesn't perform any differently, I just want some tips you use for stressed horses or horses with slight colic? Bran mash? Lots of hay? Etc.
I have gotten the vet out before and she said it's nothing serious we just need to take extra care of him because he is a stress head so what are your tips?
Thanks :)
5 AnswersHorses7 years agoWhat injury could this be?
My horse did a comp on the weekend and I bandaged him and came down yesterday to find the upper tendon area of his right leg a bit puffy. I immediately though it was a bowed tendon due to the bandages, however i often bandage him and this has never happened and there were pads underneath as well and I KNOW how to bandage. My mum then told me on Monday morning she took the bandages off & she is VERY vigilant and said his leg was not puffy then, so could this still be a bowed tendon? I palates it and it is not tender, my horse is not lame at all and after icing it has gone down dramatically. My mum said in his paddock as it's winter there is VERY thick mud and she thinks he may have run through it or jumped out and pulled it or something? I just want some opinions what this may be as it looks like a bowed tendon but I'm not sure, I will probably be getting an ultrasound but if it improves what are your suggestions etc and you opinions on this?
3 AnswersHorses7 years agoOver-reach boots for winter?
My horse has a bad habit of pulling shoes out in the paddock (no it's not a conformation default he is a loose, supple performance horse) and it's coming up to winter and his normal paddock over reach boots aren't cutting it.
I'm looking for opinions on the best waterproof type boots that meet his demands...
I've tried normal rubber bell boots but he stands all day biting the tops until they break - so they are a no.
I've tried the plasticky no-turn bell boots, they lasted a while but didn't cover over his shoe and he still pulled them - so needing a normal full covering boot.
Our current are the fleecy top boots with plasticky outer but as it's winter he came in with them soaking and muddy and they took over 3 days to dry.
So for winter possibly something without a fleecy top, that has a waterproof outer and also wraps the whole way around and spins and is also as tough as possible :)
Any suggestions will be appreciated and rude comments will be replied back to rudely, there's honestly no need to be rude :)
Thankyou
1 AnswerHorses7 years agoHorse won't track up in trot?
So I have owned my 5 year old thoroughbred for a while, when we first got him he couldn't track up in walk.
We took him to the vet and he has mild arthritis but she said it's nothing serious and we are managing it. He had a massage and she said his hamstrings were very stiff and she's given me exercises to do which have definitely helped and he now tracks up in walk.
I do eventing and showjumping so I've been working extra hard to loosen him up and I was wondering what exercises I could do while riding to loosen him up and get him track up/ use his hindquarters.
He is not sore, the vet has checked him a million times she thinks from being a racehorse he may have just been left and not used those muscles and is too tight to use them now so we are trying to loosen him up and I have seen improvement.
And rude comments will be replied back to rudely as he is perfectly sound and and care.
2 AnswersHorses7 years agoPost competition support?
Ido eventing and showjumping with my horse and I want something to support his legs after the show and during.
After strenuous exercise I like to poultice his legs and I was going to get stable/standing wraps to go over once I've poulticed for the trip home and that night but I've found so many different options!
I've looked on eBay and found stable boots/wraps that actually look quite good! But I'm unsure if they work or are worth it?
I want something I can put on top of the poultice to support his legs and leave on over night for the next day of competing or after we've finished.
Has anyone had any experience with these and what is the best supportive leg option- regardless of the effort they may take I want what will be best for him!
I also thought polos were standing wraps until now so I've been searching for them and can't find proper 'standing' wraps in Australia but I stumbled upon these boots which look great!
Thanks
