  • Creating a LAN network for massive file sharing?

Ok, so since some time ago I dabbled in networking a friend asked me for advice. The company he's working for is looking for a good solution to share/transfer a lot of large files efficiently between Mac's and PC's.

My suggestion was to use a LAN network with simple file sharing. Originally I thought of a simple 10+ (RJ45) port gigabit switch setup with a router between it and the internet. In theory that would give a 125 MB/s full-duplex transfer rate on a perfect cable and powerful switch.

    My question is THIS:

Would it be better (performance-wise, not budget-wise obviously) to use a switch with 10 Gigabit SFP ports and install an SFP network card on each of those? In theory that would give 1.25 GB/s transfer rate full-duplex (chill... I did say theory, didn't I?). Practically that would maybe amount to 300 MB/s transfers provided the SSDs were up to the task.

What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

  • Best monitor headphones for professional "on-location" recording?

I'd appreciate answers only from professional field recordists and sound designers who have actually used what they're about to recommend or 2nd hand recommendation from fellow sound professionals.

I'm looking for headphones to go with my Sound Devices 7-series recorder for on-location sound recording - dialogue, Sound FX and occasional foley. Assuming that price isn't a factor at all I'm looking for the ABSOLUTE BEST in terms of audio quality and durability (we all know crazy movie sets can be).

So far I've heard recommendations for the DT880 Pro's, Ultrasone PRO 900's, Sony MDR-7506/7509/7510 (not an option - I have giant ears + they're pretty fragile), Shure SRH 940's and ATH-M50X (which I already own).

  • Changing screen resolution with launch parameters?

I'm wondering whether there is a way to set what screen resolution will be used when a specified application is launched?

I know games can do that but that code is built into the game so I can't just recreate that in any other app.

Basically I want to have my screen to go to UHD (3840x2160) at 60Hz, 10 bpc, when I launch DaVinci Resolve for example. To clarify I'm mostly using 1080p 60Hz with my UHD screen due to the Windows scaling spectacularly failing to do it's job half the time.

Any ideas on how to resolve this would be much appreciated (the resolution changing, not the scaling - I've wasted enough time on that already...)

  • AES/EBU across SDI connection.?

I have a Sound Devices 702 portable digital audio recorder. I want to send 2 channels across a single SDI cable (AES/EBU) to the camera. Which cable type should I buy (R-?? designation)? I'm mostly interested in the Belden brand.

  • Samsung U28D590D and U32D970Q displays dilemma.?

How come a Samsung LED TN-type display U28D590D is advertised as having the same color gamut as a PLS-type U32D970Q of 1.07B? Is that even possible? Or does the difference lie solely in the accuracy of the color reproduction as in the DCI or Rec.709 standards which the latter display can be calibrated to (amongst others)?

    U32D970Q:

    U28D590D:

    http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/monitors/LU28D5...

Also I can understand why consumer displays are made with UHD resolution but why the professional-oriented ones aswell? Wouldn't a DCI 4K resolution be better suited for them?

  • Looking for a motherboard with a lot of SATA ports.?

Like the title says I'm looking for a PC motherboard with a chip that is designed to handle more SATA ports than the average PC on the market - to be more specific 12+ is a bare minimum. I can handle all the other components...

I'm basically asking for a server board except it doesn't have to be powerful at all. The point of all this is to assemble a low-power, low-cost rig that will house a large number of drives and provide access to them via local network (samba protocol). The data does not need to be accessible in a fast and efficient manner - only looking for something cheap that will give me the ability to access all that stored data at any time within the office.

I imagine some people would suggest just putting more drives in workstations but I'm gonna get ahead of that suggestion and explain there is simply no more space for them (already filled up all the PCs with at least 6 drives each for a total of over 73 TBs).

  • Connecting balanced 3,5mm...?

Please, verfiy and correct me if I'm wrong

If I connect a 3,5mm TRS (balanced) plug with a mono balanced signal on it to a recorder that sees this connection as stereo then I should be able to record this mono track as stereo with one of the tracks simply inverted in phase, correct?

  • Studio monitor advice needed - I'm torn between Yamaha HS8 and Event 20/20 BAS v3 ...?

A set of any of those would deplete my budget so there wouldn't be anything left for a subwoofer to compliment the frequency range. Main objective here is to get the fullest sound possible - including low ends (naturally I'm not expecting miracles here with drivers of these sizes).

Both are still fairly new on the market and there isn't much out there in terms of reviews and professional opinions.

They would be used for amateur / semi-professional mixing. Mostly audio mixing/fx for video projects, studio recordings from time to time.

I'm basing my 2 main choices on the research I've done over the past 2 days.

If you have any other suggestions I'm always willing to reconsider.

  • Can I connect 2 GbE ports on a DGS-1016D Switch for load-balancing between a NAS?

I want to connect my NAS to a switch with 2 parallel connections for load balancing. I already have that with my router but I'm upgrading and greatly expanding my network so I'll be adding a switch behind the router. I'm wondering if a layer 2 switch can support that...

I know I don't really need to do this since 1 Gb is usually more than HDDs are capable of transferring even sequentially but I'll probably be switching to custom network adapters and high speed SSD drives in near future so I'd like to have the option available.

I'd most appreciate comments from people with experience in these kinds of cases.

  • Liquid cooling loop design dilemma.?

I'm looking for advice from LC veterans since I'm going to build my first LC setup. I've already dismissed complete sets like the one from XSPC since after doing some simple math I can get better equipment and still come out on top money-wise.

My question is which loop would be better suited with low level noise being the primary objective.

    1.) Res -> Pump -> CPU -> 140x140x30 Rad -> GPU -> 360x120x55 Rad -> Res

    - or -

    2.) Res -> Pump -> Splitter { CPU + GPU } -> 360 Rad -> Res

There was a 3rd option which I dismissed because of the shear cost of dual 200x200 Rads (one being for CPU and the other for GPU)

    Hardware outline:

    Intel i7-4770

    Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H

Gainward GTX580 1536 "Good Edition" (with heatspreader)

    CM HAF X Chassy

The idea is that the 360 Rad would be cooled by 3 Noctua NF F12 fans along with 200 mm low speed fan on top, and the 140 Rad would cool down the liquid from the CPU a little so that heat can be taken from the GPU more efficiently.

    Preliminary hardware list:

Laing D5 Vario (probably the ceramic bearing version)

3x G 1/4 connection Dual Bay Res (I'm not sold on any brand yet)

    7/16 " Hose

    Good quality compression fittings

Universal AlphaCool CPU and GPU copper blocks (could use some recommendations on this one - not just AlphaCool naturally - something with copper plate preferably) --- I'll be fitting the VRMs on the GPU with the best Phobya thermopads and a set of radiators (which will be cooled by 1x 230mm side fan an another 120mm VGA cooling tunnel-mounted fan).

  • Does (!)Hardware(!) RAID require support from the OS like Windows 7?

If it doesn't are there RAID type limitations?

I'm talking about setting up RAID with something like Intel Rapid Storage outside the operating system.

2 different rigs. Aiming for RAID0 on one and either RAID1 or RAID5 on the other. One is running Win7 Pro SP1 64x, and the other Win7 Home SP1 64x.

Probably gonna use the Seagate Constellation ES series drives under 2TB.

  • Would a 240x120x30 mm radiator with 2 fans be enough to cool two GTX 560 Ti GPUs?

The cooling on my GPUs is so bad that I actually have to severely limit graphical details in games to keep them within bearable noise level. I have the space to use one of those radiators for each of the GPUs but that'd require buying another radiator and another pump (flow distance issues). And I'd rather not spend more on this if I don't have to.

Those are Gainward GTX 560 Ti 1GB OC "Golden Sample" , and the temps on stock cooling can go up to 86°C (safe operating temps are up to 98°C) with the fans spinning at 3000 RPM (I don't have to explain how much noise a 80 mm fan generates operating at that speed) - http://www.gainward.com/main/vgapro.php?id=456&lan...

I'm planning on doing a full copper setup with mostly AlphaCool hardware on 1/4G (6mm) hoses.

  • Will an AMD A-10 CPU be able to take advantage of Intel's XMP?

I'm curious. Since ASRock motherboards have support for both AMP (AMD) and XMP (Intel) memory profiles, will an A10-5800K AMD CPU be able to take advantage of the XMP benefits if both the Mobo and RAM modules support it? (I don't want to use an AMP enabled memory for obvious financial reasons)

Technically the boost comes from the Mobo and in theory CPU should be fine with the upgrade but I'm still having doubts about the memory controller possibly showing me the middle finger...

Share your thoughts on this please - brainstorm if you will... :D

  • What is the most teamwork-oriented mmorpg?

I'm looking for a free mmorpg with decent graphics and solid teamwork opportunities. Like WoW before all the expansions that made the game unbearable... I'm not interested in guilds, politics, PvP or any other stuff. Just wanna do group dungeons (role oriented - unlike GW2 for example)

  • Is there a free decent audio capturing software?

I need something that can handle capturing 6 channel audio from the "output" device (like a soundcard - in other words, something that is currently being played) and saving it as wave or raw audio stream.

  • What weaponry are PMCs allowed to use?

And I don't mean small arms. I couldn't find anything about limitations as to the type of hardware PMCs are authorized to own/use (like armed naval vessels, armored ground forces or military aircraft). Bottom line - what is the limit to their firepower?
