  • Abandoned Car in NJ?

I rent a condo in NJ. I have my old car parked in the visitor's lot at my building on private property. The registration has lapsed, but it is not in use. The management company called me and informed me that the police had tagged it as abandoned. I informed her that it most assuredly was not abandoned and I was seeking a buyer for the car. I contacted the police, and they informed me that they would not and could not sticker a car as abandoned on private property unless requested to do so by the property owner.

As far as I can tell, I was not in violation of any of the rules for the development. Now I've found that the car has been taken. What is my recourse here? I had a buyer lined up, but now have had to tell them that the car is unavailable at this time. If the car was taken without permission, is that theft? Is the property owner liable for damages?
