  • Bitten by a dog in LA. What should I do besides medical attention?

My husband (he's a delivery driver) was delivering a package with medicines to a patient with HIV at his house and when he opened the door and was signing the paper for the delivery, a dog came out and bit my husband. The man call the dog and closed the door in my husband's face very rudely. Then my husband knock his door again to ask for something to clean his injury since it started bledding and another man came telling him to stop bothering, and he said "you know what? my dog is more important than you and that any human being, so get away from here now ". The bite mark was obvious and it was bleeding, so my husband called 911 and was told to call the Animal Control. We are currently in an urgent care facility for review by the physician and give the injection against rabies. What are the steps to follow in order for the dog owner to be responsible for the costs and what to start a legal action against the owner of the dog? My husband has all his information. We live in Hollywood, CA. Please advise.

  • Brought to small court for the second time for the same case... is that possible and legal?

My washer machine had a problem: didn't drained dirty water when over the process. I called for a service. The technician came, said it was fixed, charged my credit card and gone. Next day it has exactly the same problem. I called again. I was told the switch lid had to be changed because the water didn't stop when I opened it. I said it was not the problem since it was like that from the beginning, 10 years ago. They insisted it was and the amount for that switch lid would be $154. I was very clear with the guy saying that if the problem wasn't resolved I would pay a penny for something that I knew it was not the problem. He agreed (over the phone). The technician came, change the switch and said now it works. It didn't. So I faxed the company saying I DO NOT AUTHORIZE you charge my credit card since even you change a part, the problem I called for remains. They call me an assured they wouldn't charge at all. They send another technician. He said it is the timer and he offer to do the repair for $160 INCLUDING the lid switch already changed. I said yes but they never showed up again, so I called and the owner said he was not the one that offered that deal and he would not make a reimburse for the amount charged to my credit card and they would not make any other repair. I made a claim on AmEx, they investigate it for 3 months, then they mailed me a letter saying the merchant had not provide documentation supporting the charge, so they credited the amount for good. Then, he put a lean to my landlord. After that the sheriff came to serve me because this guy brought me to small court. I gather all the documentation (I had faxed them twice saying I did not authorize they charge my credit card until the problem I called for is fixed), I even taped the whole washing process in order the jugde could see the original problem remains... then I realized that the lid switch they had changed didn't work either! and I went to court. He never showed up, so the judge dismissed the case without prejudice (??). Period. Three days ago the sheriff served me again with the same small court claim, but also served my landlord and his wife. My landlord understand the situation and is in my side, but I don't want to bother them in any way. The sheriff told me it is ridiculous and I should go to the court to place a claim of defendant or something like that in order to stop this guy wasting my time and bothering me. Any professional advice please? I really don't know what steps to follow now.

  • Interesting places to visit in our way from San Francisco to LA excluding the CPH1, 101 and I5 freeways?

We plan to drive next saturday from LA to SFO on the spectacular CPH1 but we'd like to visit some other interesting places in our way back home on monday. We can leave the bay area (which we know pretty well) on Sunday evening, stay in a hotel Sunday night, and reach home monday evening/night. Since we have gone back and forth driving the CPH1, the 101 and the 5 freeway, we want to know if there are some interesting places, towns, cities, ghost cities, lakes, etc. driving another (easter to south) way back to LA. Any advice? Thanks!

  • When should I put my dog to sleep? How I notice if she is suffering or not?

Three months ago my dog was diagnosed with a cancer tumor around her guts. Vet told me then that if she would be his dog he would let her has the best life till the end, which probably would be no later than a month. TWO months later she had lost a lot of weight (from 50 to 36lb) so I came back to the vet for a follow up, and was told he couldn't believe the dog was still alive. I asked him how I'd realize when the end is close in order to avoid any kind of pain to her, and he told me that my dog would probably have a sudden heart attack since her heart beats were abnormal, but since she wasn't suffering (he said), I could wait and the moment I notice she is in pain or somehow suffering, bring her to the vet to put her sleep. He said I'd realize of it when she doesn't want to eat or stand up to go pee, or being whining or some other signal. Now she keeps losing weight but she anxiously eat (just a little bit) and wants to walk with me, very very slowly and weak, and wait to be outside to pee and poo... I really don't want her to suffer, and I'm pretty sure she doesn't but I want somebody to tell me if she could be someway suffering and I don't get noticed about it. Also, I'd appreciate somebody with the same experience tells me what the signals will be for me to know whether I should take her to the vet to get sleep forever and when to say 'this is the time...', or if I have to wait for her to pass away by herself. How I'd get noticed if she is somehow in pain or suffering? The fact that vet tells me 'that moment bring her to put her sleep' made me think if it is not just for his own business... Please advice!

  • whom belong my dog's xrays to?

My daughter brought my dog to the vet in order to get 2 radiology views of her stomach, which I paid for. When reached home at night I wanted to take a look at them, but happens that the only thing the vet gave to my daughter was the invoice! Today I called in order to get them 1. for my daughter to show me what they found out on the xrays, and 2. to get a 2nd opinion and the vet refused to give them to me (I'm the dog's owner and I paid for them!). Is that right? Is there a law about that type of practices? What if I want to change the vet? Do I have to pay for a new set of xrays being that they were already done?

  • Service to fix an appliance wasn't done and they filed a small court claim!?

I asked a company to fix my washer machine. The technician came and told me it was fixed. I paid for it. He told me and put in the invoice a $155 lid switch was broken and had to be replaced (not as a condition to fix the machine since he said he was waiting the whole process to see if it worked and it did) so I told him I was not interested to change it since it was broken for 7 years and it had not been the problem which I called them for fixing. The next day I tried it and the washer machine still had exactly the same problem. So I called and the rep. told me it was the lid switch that had to be changed in order to fix the problem. I told him I was sure it wasn't the problem and I didn't want to spend $ 155 in an unneeded repair. He just answered: we are the technicians. So I agreed but I told him that if they changed it and the machine remained unfixed I didn't accept to be charged for it. Again he came, 'fixed' it. I wasn't there so I didn't sign to charge the same credit card and I wasn't asked how I wanted to pay. The next day it still has exactly the same problem, so I faxed a letter saying I did not authorized to charge my credit card until the problem what I requested a service for is really fixed and I didn't agree to be charged for something that I specifically told them it was not the problem. They called me and told me it would not be charged until fixed. But they did. So I disputed the charged, which I have to pay until the credit card decides if it is valid or not. Now, they are taking me to small court. What do I suppose to do?

  • Is my co-worker discriminating me? What to do?

We are four people on the same company department. Two of us are Latinas, in the same level, almost same salary, same 'position' -we both are qualitative researchers- I've much more experience moderating focus groups, she is stronger writing reports with my findings. The third one is Chinese and kind of assistant, and the fourth one is white American and the director of qualitative insights, meaning the one responsible of deliverable to clients but not our boss. All of us report to the same boss, who happens to be also the company's CEO. Because business were so slow, bosses cut one day a week of our full time job, then they cut me one more day because I didn't have enough moderations to do. But I realized that the 4th one is now assigning a heavy work load to the other two coworkers, and nothing to me, meaning she is limiting my work load, even I am able to do exactly the same that the other two do, and even our mutual bosses ask her to share the work between all of us. But she always look for the way to give the work to the other two (who are always complaining they are overwhelmed and also came back now to the full time shift) and nothing to me. That way I look like unnecessary and I'm still working 3 days a week. When bosses assign me some project, she looks the way to explain that she prefers to use the other two because she says my English is not perfect and she doesn't want and she doesn't have the time to revise everything I write (which is her main duty not only with my writing but everybody's writings). She also had said she is not a teacher and she doesn't waste her time teaching me her style, which she did and she does to the other two!. I'm so frustrated with that that in order to verify whether my writings are well written or not, I had contracted (several times) (and paid out of my own pocket), a proof reader to check it and correct my mistakes, so I am pretty sure that the documents I produce are ok, understandable and all in an executive level. So I am sure they are! But no matter the way I write let's say a report, no matter it is already proof read (she doesn't know that) she put all upside down saying exactly the same but in a different way, but trying to show our bosses she has to spend a lot of time and effort reading my documents. Basically, she is limiting my possibilities to come back to full time shift, nobody here realized it is on purpose, and I'm feeling discriminated because of my English, my age or because I'm Latina. We had never confronted. I once talked to her and she answer me with a smile, but everything remains the same. Can I do something to fix it? Can I consider that discrimination? If so, what exactly I suppose to do other than (or after) state it on a letter or email to the CEO? I realize that they don't realize the deep damage she is doing to me, or, if they realize, they feel so busy with the slow business that they put that in the not-priority thing to take care of. If it is a discriminative behavior, can I sue just her or taking her to court means taking the company to court? I'm very happy with the company, I don't want to lose my job because a co-worker purpose but I really don't know what to do! Please help!

  • Co-worker attitude: is it discrimination? What to do?

I've a co-worker that has a higher position than mine but is not my boss. I'm responsible for getting information from our studies' participants and she is the one in contact with clients and responsible for writing documents and reports using that information. We suppose to work like a team. However, she always ignore me, she doesn't cc me emails, etc. even that our mutual bosses insist saying she has to do it. But she does once and nothing further. Of course, her attitude could impact my work (and my career) if I don't do an effort asking(almost begging!) for updates when I should receive them by default. Other than that, we never had a real confrontation. She is American, I'm Latina. She is in her 30s I'm in my 50s. Should I consider it a discriminative behavior? What do I suppose to do? I'd appreciate just an every-day advice but also a legal advice if possible.

  • Do dogs suffer panic attacks?

My dog usually sleeps at the living room in her rug. One night three weeks ago she started crying and scratching our bedroom door with her paw, desperately, like she had a tremendous fear. When I went to see what was happening, she refused to come back to the living room and her tail showed she was scared for something. From then on, it happened a couple of times more, I had to place her in the kitchen in order to be able to sleep the rest of the night. Two nights ago it happened again but it was even worse, when we left her at home (in the living room always) to go work, as usual, she broke one of the windows screen and ran away. A neighbor caught her and bring her back, leaguing her outside, and in the afternoon we again left her inside, and when we came back we found out the she had tried to break another (higher) window screen. She seems to be scared for something specially when nobody is with her in the same room. Do dogs suffer panic attacks? What could happen? and What can we do?

  • Overnight at grandparents' home.?

Since my 17 months old granddaughter's parents are separated, Victoria is Thursday overnight at dad's home and my husband and I take care of her every weekend to help my daughter work on weekends. She is with my daughter all day long from Sunday-Thursday evening, and Friday to Saturday. We haven't problems till last weekend, when Victoria started crying asking for 'mama.. mama... mami...?' She seems to be missing her now. My daughter says that eventually she has to get used to it. I personally had a traumatic experience when I was 7 years old because I wasn't used to get far from my mom and circumstances drove us to be separated for 2 months. My husband says we don't have to force her to stay with us suffering or missing mom. Any advice? Thanks!

  • Can somebody tell me the real pros and cons of filing bankruptcy?

Lawyers say is the best when you have a lot of debts. Some others say the damage is worse that standing there and trying to pay and pay and pay every month, not able to save a penny. I've debts and a good job, but I can't save because my APRs went to the sky... Besides, my husband is considering file for bankruptcy because he lost his job... but it means all his debts will come to me, meaning my debt will be higher and my paycheck will not be enough very soon. I assume that as soon as he file it, my APR will be even more higher...I have a 550 FICO because my credit line is 75% used, but I don't have just one late payment never ever. What is the best to do??? Leave my husband file himself, or both of us filing together?

A couple more questions: 1. My daughter has some savings into our common bank safe deposit. All that money is hers. If we file bankruptcy, are her savings safe on there or it is better to take'm out?; and 2. I've a life insurance... does it play on the bankruptcy issue in some way??? I'd appreciate some expert to answer honestly. Thanks!

  • Married filing together or separately... what the pros and cons are?

We have to file our taxes as a married couple for the first time. We have very different incomes and for personal reasons my husband is thinking to file bankruptcy. We live in a CA. Somebody told me it is better to file separately, some others say the best is to file individually. Besides the fact that I'd receive more tax return... Can somebody tell me what are the pros and cons to file one or the other way?
