  • Is it possible for a Screen to blank out because of a faulty CPU?

I work at a computer repair company and i'v noticed a repair ticket that seems pretty suss

to repair a problem where a Screen would Blank out, the CPU was replaced in the notebook

now, with my undrestanding of a CPU, The Cache is evenly used, so that transistors are not worn out. and at 2GHZ this means the entire Cache (of all levels) is used in a fraction of a second.

So that means if there was a faulty transistor in the cache of the CPU wouldn't it crash straight away?

If there was a fault anywhere else wouldn't it crash evenfaster?

  • What do you think about this rig as a Media and file server for home use?

    The rig is as follows

    Mobo Asus M3A78-T

CPU Semperon 2.2 ghz (can't remember model but it's only 45watts)

    VGA integrgated

Storage 5x samsung 500gb sata drives (in raid5) (and a corsair voyager GT to boot from)

Chassis antec sonata 2 with almost no fans installed

    PSU - Antec EArthwatts 350w

My plan is to boot from the corsair voyager GT and everything else goes on the raid config (so that the hdd's can turn off when not in use and the thumbdrive can be on all the time, so everything can be quiet and low power)

i'd be running server 08 but i'm unlikely to set up a domain, DNS or FTP

Since a few people in the house already use it, i'd probably use itunes to share media, as well as having the library shared in windows shared folders

of course there'd be a huge shared folder for files, programs, ISO's and movies

The unit would be used for torrents also, and may also be used in conjunction with a TV tuner to be a huge recorder

the unit may also become a HTPC, although our television doesn't have HDMI, so we may need an actual videocard with the RGB plugs when that happens and a Blu ray drive

Any opinions, suggestions improvements or comments anyone can offer?

  • What's a good substitute for MSN messenger?

I'v got an eeePC and i find MSN 7 to be too much of a resource hog in xp.

My eeepc is 600mhz, 2gb ram and is running windows xp SP3

what's a good substitute for messenger?

I don't need any sign in, but my hotmail account, and i need it to support webcam and voice.

I tried pidgen that was on the original xandros install, and again when i was using eeexubuntu, but it sucks and doesn't support webcam.

basically i need something that wont' be such a resource hog, that can log me onto MSN and can do voice and webcam.

i know of trillian and Mirranda, but can anyone recommend me anything else or comment on the use of those two reguarding what i need?

thanks, and btw, eeepc's are awesome and i'd recommend them to most people

  • How to change hard drive modes?

Works in PIO Mode only even though both the motherboard and the disk should support UDMA2 Mode (Secondary IDE Channel work in UDMA2 Mode)

This situation makes the drive work very slow (around 1/10 its nominal transfer rate),

hot and uses up to 90% of CPU time.

How can I change this on my MEDION MD5400 notebook?

If there's any more info you need to help me, just email me and i'll update the question and email you the update.

  • What's wrong with Window Vista?

I'v heard alot of bad things about windows vista, incompatabilities, resource hog and random crashes.

But in my week of using windows xp ultimate 64bit i have experienced none of these things.

i have loaded every program i want and it works fine (except for vmware, which won't work on 64bit, not vista's fault)

Ok vista is slower than xp, but is that a suprise? i mean it does more at once than xp ever did, eg gadgets, aero, plus what you'd do normally in xp and anyway you can turn gadgets and aero off if you want.

A resource hog? yes it's more, but with ram prices who cares? any computer that doesn't support up to 4gb of ram shouldn't really be running vista anyway, go back to xp, it's what it's made for.

I remember the cries when xp came out, "oh no, my obsure program that i rarely use won't work!"

and now xp is the loved OS.

but my question is, Is there anything wrong that i missed? I just don't want to get to set into vista and then find it's awful because of one thing

  • Wireless router trouble?

Recently I'v been having trouble with my wireless connection, I can't keep it connected....

First i was running xp and the problem was happening, so i reloaded xp and it kept disconnecting, then i loaded ubuntu, still happening, then i loaded vista x64 ultimate still happening.

then i changed my network card, still happening

then i upgraded the firmware of the router, still happening

then i changed to try every channel available, still happening

then i got a 3rd party antenna set, for the router and my wireless card, still happening

however when i get close to the router it stays with the connection a bit better

and my signal is constantly 70%-90% wherever i am in the house so i don't think it's reception.

I suspect that one of my neighbors have installed a set of cordless phones in their house and are creating a low SNR environment

is there anything else that i may have forgotten before i run ethernet cables all through the walls?

  • How to install COD 1.5 patch?

Ok, i posted this question before bit i didn't get any helpful answers, probably because i worded it badly.

I have COD 4 ver 1.4 installed but when i try to install 1.5 it says it's already in.

Is there a way i can force it to install or remove any registry entries to fool it?

I had it installed before and some data became corrupt so I uninstalled it and then attempted to install it again but when updating it came to this problem each time.

could punkbuster have anything to do with this? If so, is there a way to uninstall it?

  • PCI and AGP are they related?

the number at the end of AGP and PCI-E (1x,2x,4x, 8x, 16x) are these multiplications of the same speed?

ie is PCI-E 8x the same transfer rate as AGP 8x and PCI-E 16x twice the transfer rate?

I know my computer stuff so any technical answers are all good :)

  • Why do mac users keep trying to force thier OS on everyone else?

In every question that is along the lines of, "I need a new laptop to run games on" or "I want a new PC for games" or "My pc is broken fix it". There's always at least one Mac user who says "Go buy a Mac".

    Why is this?

Mac's do crash, they do lag and they have the potential to have problems any computer with windows has. So they aren't any better.

They cost more. You need programs specifically written for macs, so veteran PC users will need to re buy all their software if they want to use it with any efficiency (I do know about boot camp, and I know how much ram running the Mac OS takes up plus the OS of windows you need to have installed). You can't run many games, so two of those questions are invalidated already, and since Macs still have problems, it's not going to fix their broken computer, the third Q.

I know you mac users don't seem to be able to handle Microsoft's complexity so that you don't destroy your own installs of Windows (some can ), but remember, we don't' care.

  • Are there any wireless network cards that support wpa2 and 64 bit?

I'm looking to get a new wirelss card, and at the same time migrate to vista 64 bit or xp 64 bit (I saw huge improvements in speed in the windows' environment when I had it installed before, but my netcomm wireless card had no drivers).

Are there any wireless network cards that support wpa2 and 64 bit vista and xp 64?

only needs 54 mbit connection, but 108 would be nice. And 108 is the maximum for my router, so don't bother recommending my one of those 600mbit cards)

preferably a PCI connection, but USB if all else fails

Any trusted brand (besides netgear*) would be appreciated

and it's a shame but D-link have no 64bit drivers

*I'v had alot of trouble with netgear routers and cards before, do not want to repeat the experience.

  • SLI and Crossfire?

Is there that much of a peformance gain as told by Nvidia and ATI when in sli and xfire?

I currently have an Inno3d 8800gts 640mb and an Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus. I'm running games fine now, but i know that this Videocard line will be discontinued and i'm pretty sure the new 8800gts's are not compatable in sli with my old one.

would it be worth the $500 AUD for the 2nd one now for sli, or should i wait till the 9 series and get a new cpu psu and 2 graphics cards all together?

Also, my friend's computer fried and he's getting a new mobo (we've already solved why it fried), a gigabyte that's crossfire capable although he plays the latest games, even with me sometimes, would it be worth it to go crossfire as he's not really technically minded. What fried the old mobo was a galaxy 8600gts that was faulty and so we're returning the 8600gts and perhaps we should see if we could get an ATI equivalent in exchange and then get a xfire edition later. again, worth it? and what ATI card?
