Reloading Federal shotgun hulls?
I have been reloading ammo, both brass and shotgun, for about 4 or 5 years now...I have noticed that I have issues with federal hulls, about 1 in every 10 or so collapses at the base when I crimp the shell...I haven't had this happen with any oher hulls, except on rare occasions...Winchester, Remington, Activ...all load just fine. Is there a specific defect with the Federal hulls, or is it just my experience?
4 AnswersHunting1 decade agoAnyone have experience with the Anzio 20/50?
I understand the utility of the .50 BMG, and even the 20mm rifles offered from Anzio-Ironworks (http://www.anzioironworks.com/index.html), but they have another cartridge, the Anzio 20/50. As I understand it, it is a 20mm Vulcan necked down to a .50 caliber bullet, and the stats for it are amazing. 750 or 800 grain round going 3600fps, that's pushing just over 23000 foot pounds of energy. I guess what my question is, what utility would this thing have that a .50BMG or a 20mm couldn't do as well, or better? And, what kind of powder would you use in a case this big? I don't know if HS-50 would burn slowly enough to build up the pressure necessary for that kind of performance.
3 AnswersHunting1 decade agoYour opinion on the SVD Dragunov?
All of the research I have done on the SVD Dragunov rifle shows that it was not meant as a true sniping weapon, but more as a DMR rifle, for short to medium range. Now, I want your opinion on the weapon. I have never handled (much less fired) one, but I am very familiar with the 7.52x54R round, used in Mosin-Nagants, and I have easily, using the elevated sights on the Mosin, got it out to 1000+ yards, with reasonable accuracy (about 20-24 inches).
7 AnswersHunting1 decade agoSuspected accuracy of a rifle?
I was in a gun-shop the other day (Ron Peterson's Guns), and was handling a fairly old double rifle. It was a 9.3x74R and a 16 gauge side by side. I have seen plenty of side by sides, but all in the same caliber or gauge. Now, my question is, how accurate would said rifle and/or shotgun be, with one set of sights, and dramatically different ballistics? I realize that the 16 gauge would be closer range, and the 9.3 would be for longer range, but using the same sight for both? Seems kind of shady in the accuracy department to me.
4 AnswersHunting1 decade agoWhich rifle would you suggest I buy?
I am looking at a .338 Winchester Mag, I like the caliber, and I can reload for it. Now, I am looking at a bolt-action rifle, but not sure what rifle I would like to buy. I am stuck between the Remington 700, and the Weatherby Vanguard. I own a 700, and love it, but have heard great things about Weatherby. I am welcome to suggestions for other models as well.
4 AnswersHunting1 decade ago3.5 Inch 12 gauge reloading?
I recently picked up a new shotgun, with a 3.5 inch chamber. I am also an avid reloader, both for brass and for shotgun. Now, I have been able to find very little information concerning reloading the 3.5 inch shell. I was looking for buck-shot and slug loads, but all I can find is steel and lead shot. So, since I cannot find this information, I was thinking of going by weight, and loading the shells as I would standard shot, but using buckshot or slugs instead. I know to build up my loads, starting low, etc. Thoughts? Suggestions? Literature on the matter?
Much Appreciated
3 AnswersHunting1 decade agoGun Rights in the US: Your Opinion?
I want to know how you guys feel about gun rights in the US. I am not talking about weapons primarily used for hunting, but on combat based weapons specifically. I am talking about weapons like the AR-15, AK-47, TEC-9 etc. I personally have no problems with it, I own some weapons like these, and love to shoot them, but, I realize that they really have no practical hunting or self-defense purpose (In the sense of home defense against a couple of burglars, not a hit squad or military incursion). I also want to see your opinions on weapons in the .50BMG class (.416 Barrett, .408 CheyTac , etc)...

14 AnswersHunting1 decade ago.44 Magnum Ruger Super Blackhawk Modifications?
I have a friend who wants to port (not magnaport) the end of the barrel for my Super Blackhawk. I have no intention of selling it, so I am not worried about reducing the value. I know that it will reduce recoil (I don't care one way or the other, I am not recoil shy), and reduce muzzle climb. Any suggestions? Has anyone done something similar?

5 AnswersHunting1 decade agoSMLE .303 British Mods?
I just bought a SMLE .303 MkIV from a buddy of mine. Playing around with it, I noticed that is a lot of fun to shoot, so I ported the barrel (myself). Now, she kicks like a .223, and is just as accurate. I am thinking about free-boring the chamber, counterboring the barrel, and then putting a scope, pipod and a Monte-Carlo Synthetic stock on. Ideas or suggestions?
3 AnswersHunting1 decade ago.338 Winchester Magnum or .338 RUM?
I am looking to get a new long range (300+ yards) hunting rifle. I am having a hard time on deciding between the .338 Winchester Magnum, and the .338 RUM. Planning on either a Remington 700, or a Browning BAR. Any suggestions for caliber/rifle combination? I plan on handloading ammo, and hunting for anything from antelope to bison, as well as elk and possibly feral hogs.
Thanks, Daniel Murray
