  • Yearly photographic improvement thread.. How am I doing?

So now it's basically a yearly tradition to post here and ask how I'm doing with my photography. I'd like to see what you guys' opinions are on it.

    Here's a timeline:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    Three years ago (bad photos):

    - Attempt at nature: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/523668...

    - Somewhere in LA: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/523668...

This is pretty much when I was starting, and I asked for critique on those. It was relatively neutral to negative.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    One year ago (okay photos):

    - Some moody desert stuff: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/751114...

    - Some Flagstaff action: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/789725...

    - One of my first Milky Way shots: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/781627...

I feel neutral about this work, but I got relatively positive feedback on it at the time. That was the last batch of stuff that I got critique on.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    Current Photographs:

    - A Photo I just took in Wisconsin of the Rolling Hills: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/928918...

    - A Recently taken photo of the Mackinac Bridge: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/928041...

    - A Fawn in Rochester, MI: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/927079...

    - A Processed Photo that I took in India: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/905241...

    - A Long Exposure from Prescott, AZ: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/909067...

I don't know what to feel on it. What do you guys think of it?

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

I posted multiple sets to show natural progression. I'd love your opinion on my current work only, because I don't feel like my past work is a good example of the work I do now.

    All opinions are welcome. :)

  • What do you think of my photos as of late?

Hi guys. It's now more of a ritual of progress. I probably first posted here three or so years ago asking for critique, then every year since. I feel like I have made a lot of progress lately since moving back from India.

I want to know what you guys think of some of my newer photos:

    http://imgur.com/a/xVZA3

I put them in gallery form so that they are easy to go through and see.

    Any critique is welcome. Thanks.

  • What do you guys think of my photography? Follow up.?

It has been a verryyyy long time since I have asked you guys, and I feel like I have grown a lot in my photography, so I am curious to what you think of my photography. I'm actually fifteen now.. Yay, so I get to take photo class in the fall.

I would love critique. I don't really trust anything said on Flickr, because people don't just say "Your photography sucks!" on there..

I'm not going to post just links to single photos, because then I'd only be pointing out my favourites. I want you to see all of them, and tell me what you think..

    Thanks guys!

  • Zooms vs. Primes (Canon)?

I think maybe I have just had bad experience with lenses.

I'll admit that I have usually gotten cheap lenses for cheap cameras. I got the Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 to compliment my T3i. The quality was good at 18mm (28mm full frame), but diminished quickly with zooming.. I upgraded recently to a 5D, and I bought myself a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, because it was fast, and only 400 USD. Now, I have realized that the lens will not do. The flare is miserable, and the sharpness is poor along with lackluster contrast. I am in between two decisions now:

    Go with Primes --or--

    Go with Zooms

If I get zooms, I want to get the 17-40mm f/4L, and the 70-200 f/4L. Though, I am nervous about plopping down over 1200 USD on some zooms. Maybe my experiences have been bad? Can anyone recommend either, or say another lens?

If I went with primes, I would get a 15mm f/2.8 Rokinon, 35mm f/2.0 Canon, 50mm f/1.4 Canon, 85mm f/1.4 Rokinon, 135mm f/2.8 with Soft Focus Canon. I am leaning towards this, except that is a little more in cost, and is a hassle to switch lenses all the time..

For those who ask what types of photos I will be taken, and the forth; http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/678689...

If you recommend the zooms, do you know of any sort of disguise for a white lens? I am only a teenager, and I don't want to walk around with a white lens and a red stripe.. It's asking for trouble.

    Thanks for any help offered!

  • Would learning Norwegian increase my chances of getting a job in Norway?

I want to live in Norway, and get a job there. Do you think that even though many know English, that learning Norwegian would increase my chances of getting a job there?

    Thanks.

  • I would like a non-professional opinion?

    Good Evening from India!

I feel like photographers can sometimes be a little biased in their criticism of others depending on their experiences with photography/styles. I would like to get some opinions from people, other than professionals. I got great advice from professionals, but in the end it is the consumer that matters when it comes down to whether or not your photography is good.

I am posting three photos from my Flickr, though feel free to look through others. Give constructive criticism.. I will not go cry off somewhere if you criticise a photo, so be perfectly frank (which I know most YA! people are :P)

I am fourteen and am looking into really embracing photography. I just went full frame (yesterday.. literally :)) and am replacing a lot of lenses. I want to hear what you think, so I can get an idea of where i am standing..

    Thanks a bunch,

    Brock

  • Do I have the right to say something?

I just moved to India from the USA, and it pisses me off that people here have no pride in their community.. They just drop their trash anywhere, expecting for some other "lower" caste to pick it up. As I was walking off the bus getting back from school (I'm 14 [this will become relevant]), I saw a little maybe seven year old kid throw a huge chocolate bar wrapper on the ground next to a pile of trash on the street. It really frustrated me. I wanted to say something to him, but I didn't know if it is my right. Should I have said something?

Stuff like this happens all the time. On the third floor of our apartment, there were kids playing with Styrofoam and boxes, and they ripped it all up, and left it there for the cleaning people. I just don't feel that since their parents have money, that it gives them the right to do this.

I then once saw a kid my age take his garbage from his house, and chuck it over a wall into an undeveloped lot. He then walked off like nothing happened.

What is my right? Should I say something?

I just don't like some parts of the Indian Culture.

  • Explain the Canon Warranty Please?

    Hi Everyone!

I currently own a T3i, and now live in India. I take lots of photos, and I recently checked, and I have taken approx. 93,500 photos. This is because I take lots of time lapses, etc.

On the Canon website, it says my camera shutter has a life expectancy of 100,000 frames. Does this mean that if I take 110,000 photos, or something, that I won't be able to get the camera fixed if the shutter stops working? I am still within the 1 year warranty, so that is mainly why I ask.

This worries me a lot because I now live in India, and if something were to happen, I'd basically be screwed between shipping and repair costs, if there are anything, along with a more than negligible duration of time that I won't have my camera.

If anyone knows the answer to this.. Please respond! Thank you very much!

  • Switching from Canon to Nikon?

I currently have a nameless Canon T_i, and a Sigma 18-200mm, a 50 f/1.8. I am considering for my next camera upgrading to a Nikon D300. What would be the easiest/most economical way of switching to Nikon?

    Thanks!

  • What lens would you recommend for landscapes?

    I have a few lenses (Sigma 18-200, 50mm f/1.8, 18-50mm, etc.)

If price weren't particularly an object.. what lenses would provide the sharpest, and most undistorted landscapes. Thanks!

  • Show me what pictures could like...?

I have been shooting with a DSLR for years... and years. I have several low to mid-range lenses, and I'd say my lenses are incredibly sharp, clear, and leave beautiful bokehs, I'll show the photos below with the lens it was taken with.. but what I want to know is how a $2000 lens is better.? What would it really do better?

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/596253...

    --done with a sigma 18-200 f3.5-6.3 @ 108mm f7.1

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/595327...

--done with the same sigma lens at 18mm f3.5

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/brockwhittaker/566309...

--done with a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens at (you guessed it; 50mm) and f1.8

These are all really inexpensive lenses, and I have gotten great results.. all of these photos are almost direct from camera, just a little bit of curves. If someone actually does have one of these really nice lenses, tell me how you like it, give pictures and examples if you will. Thanks a lot!

  • How to get over a lost friendship? And did I cross a line?

I was friends with this girl for about a year and we were pretty good friends for a bit. We got in a huge fight because she was talking about the stupid things she did in her life, and i told her i didn't want to hear it because I didn't really want to hear all this private stuff and so I said that and she got mad and we got into an argument and i was then called judgmental, because I said some of the stuff she did was really bad, so first of all did i cross a boundary by saying something she did was bad? And how do I get over it? I don't even think she cares that much, she probably just brushed it off, but I cared a lot. So please give me advice :( thanks.
