How can a poor Black visual artist find ways to develop their talent in NY?
I need some tips to pass on to Black artists. In the daily grind where you have work, family commitments, and other demands on time and money that limit your means, what is available to help "working poor" Black visual artists develop? Many affordable programs have a cap on age, or are available for people who are jobless, elderly, or disabled. Most educational institutions are expensive and have a stifling cult-like worship of Dead White male/European artists, making it hard to get the guidance to develop a voice and style as a Black artist. Their approach is slow, Eurocentric, and almost robotic. It frustrates the Black soul. Their teachers go into attack mode against people who don't conform, and true artists have trouble pretending. Those who sell paint, clay, and other materials want an arm and a leg for it. This limits experimentation. Poor Black artists also struggle with storing their work, with gallery exposure, with convincing family that art is a wise thing to invest in. Many people believe they should cut out that part of their soul because big money does not support the development of Black artists. However, once skills are developed, it is much easier to take on these challenges. Limited ability to travel and to break routines can also make artists feel trapped and depressed and make them reckless. Also, having to stay competitive in the job that keeps a roof over your head makes it hard to do the necessary research, practice, and soul searching to develop. One artist I know works 15 hours, and barely gets by; and comes home to a wife that has only a few hours to see him before the next day's rat race. Any suggestions from your knowledge and experience on how Black artists can develop?

1 AnswerOther - Cultures & Groups9 years agoIf you call yourself a good White person, why do you allow the bad to hide among you?
When revolutionaries of nations blend in with their communities, the Whites who live large off of everyone's money often say 'give up the terrorists you are harboring.' I watched how recently a lot of Arab nations are now forced to give up their freedom fighters to prove that they are not one of them, but one of the 'good guys.' Good guys means that you are a doormat, content with the fact that someone has their hand in your pocket stealing the food off of your childrens' plate. Mosques came forward saying that they are denouncing 'radical Islam.'
I say that whenever they say this, turn it around. If you are a good White person these days it is not good enough not to join those slaughtering my people so that you can drink their blood and live in luxury. It is your job to give up the terrorists in your community. Separate yourself from the Klan, the wicked idle rich that even have their foot on your neck. Come out from among them so they can be held accountable. Stop making allowances and excuses for them.
4 AnswersOther - Society & Culture9 years agoRacism in cartoons...what is your response and observations?
I and some other people I know have noticed how many cartoons children watch stink of racism.
1. Teenage turtles are named after European artists Michaelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael. They fight Bebop and Rocksteady, who are two idiots who are 'bad guys' named after Black styles of music.
2. Mario brothers are two white hippie plummers who use a Black musical style on a show that has no Black characters. Yet they have the nerve to hint at ancient Egypt as a place of pure evil. If you look up the story, Koopa has close resemblance to a ruler of Kemet (Egypt) named Khufu. There is also a lot of subtle imagery like pyramids and other things that ties Koopa's henchmen to Egypt.
3. Cailou and the Brats slowly went from Black to White over time. The girl in the Proud Family is also getting lighter and lighter. Can anyone find a picture of the original Black ones for me?
4 AnswersOther - Cultures & Groups9 years agoDefine the connection between the wealth of White elites and the poverty of those they rob?
When one person robs another on the street, we know that the wounds of the victim and the wealth of the victimizer are as a direct result of the assault. However, I have seen a lot of questions lately where people are trying to separate the poverty, corruption, and dysfunction of countries with people that have melanin from the wealth of White countries. This is happening despite the fact that civilization started with people who have melanin and was interrupted only after their encounter with Whites. Also, what is often called White civilization, but is really White material wealth, came directly right after their violent encounters with those who have melanin or skin color. This crime is never looked at. The blue collar crimes of melanated people are often the focus of White mainstream news (surprise, surprise). Any thoughts?
3 AnswersOther - Society & Culture9 years agoWhat is the people's verdict/sentence for another police thug who killed Graham?
Richard Haste and Sgt. Scott Morris are the hired killers in a system that uses compstat statistics to mandate a certain amount of arrests and harrassment in Black and Latino areas. These are areas targeted by sanctions (starved of money and jobs and pushed to desperation to feed the privately owned prison slave labor sweatshop system).
The people need to discuss their verdicts for these enemies of the people and to post their photos on wanted posters. The people must also learn that what can bleed can also die, and must learn an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth.
3 AnswersOther - Cultures & Groups9 years agowhat are the names of some of the black businesses you know of and support?
With this information I will begin to construct a directory of Black businesses that we can all support. Name some in a variety of categories so that we can work our way towards independence. Independence is an important step to being truly free. Without it, no struggle can accomplish anything.

1 AnswerSTDs1 decade agoWhat Black businesses do you support that help to strengthen your community?
Following the philosophy of Marcus Garvey for independence, Ghandhi crippled English colonizers in India by telling Indians to make their own clothes. Similarly, it is important to make our buying power work for us. When we buy within our community, our money circulates and strengthens us by making us independent and gives us clout. Businesses should also remember to give back to the community that supports it.

2. After the revolution, the U.S. and England promised to buy the land from the stolen land from the Whites and give back to the Black indigenous. This turned out to be a lie.

4 AnswersOther - Cultures & Groups1 decade agoWhat do you think the effects of institutionalized and systemic racism are...?
1. On peoples' minds.
2. Peoples' socio-economic status
3. Peoples' behavior
4. A community's access to services, opportunities, etc.
I ask this because when people look at Black people, they don't pay much attention to the fact that they are faced with a system of underdevelopment from childhood to adulthood. A lot of analyses take people out of the context of the reality they face. For example, if a woman gets raped, we expect it to affect her thinking, behavior, self-esteem, health etc. In the case of personal trauma we heal the person, empathize, and restore their health. On the other hand, there is a tendency towards insensitivity in the case of mass trauma (more devastating than 911 and Katrina) associated with the theft, murder, and genocide (Maafa) that creates what is called Third World conditions in the Black segregated colonies of the West and in African and Latin American nations.
2 AnswersOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoWhy do people hire their own assassins?
Cigarettes are a killer. It seems like it takes an overwhelming amount of advertising combined with a desire to cope with stress to convince someone to smoke. I know it is addictive and that it is legal and available, so this might have a lot to do with it. What do you think is at the root of this addiction?
