Question about copyright laws?
I'm considering doing a Flash remake of Final Fantasy VII. I know there are a few projects that have done or are doing remakes of the game in one way or another, but I'm not sure exactly where the line is drawn when it comes to copyright infringement. For example, there is a company selling NES cartridges with a scaled-down 8-bit version of the game. The character names are identical, the storyline is almost exactly the same, the weapons, armor and items are the same, etc. The company has nothing to do with Square-Enix, so how is it they are able to distribute the game without being sued? If I did finish the game, would I legally be able to host it online for anyone to play?
