  • should i supplement my horses diet with salt?

i have a 16 yo Hannoverian gelding that's never used his mineral or salt licks (or atleast in the 7years i've had him) and i was thinking about adding salt to his dinner. he's turned out on short grass for 8+ hours, he gets free choice hay in his stall, half scoop senior feed and 1/4 scoop 12% pellet at each of two feedings. at the second feeding he also get 10-15 alfalfa cubes soaked to create a mash, 1/4 cup corn oil and Grand Complete (supplement is for joints, hooves and coat. the hay cube mash is so he'll eat the supplement). once a month for a week he gets Sand Clear becuase he'll take mouthfuls of dirt while he's grazing. i've done lots of recent reading that horses should have salt blocks/free choice lose salt or salt added to thier grain and since my horse doesn't use his salt licks i was considering adding it to his grain. i know it won't hurt him as long as he has water available but do you think it's nessccarly? how much should i give him? i've read 1-2oz.....

  • don't kids read horse books anymore?!?

when i was younger every night b4 bed i read horse books, magazines, pony club books, tack catalogs, Saddle Club series books (over 120 of them!) and vet books to learn EVERYTHING i could about ANYTHING having to do with horses and it amazes me the crazy simple questions some of these kids (and adults) ask that is basic horse knowledge. you people need to get off the internet and read!

so my question is how many of you grew up with a horse book plastered to you face like i did? and don't you think it helped you out more then this message board? i sure do!

looking for a place to tent camp. i've only been camping once and that was at the Pinery Provincial Park in Ontario. i'm looking for something similar to that - spacious wooded sites with not many neighbors and fun things to do close by. i'm really intrested in visiting some caves and just relaxing by the campfire. also what is a good month to go? thanks in advance

he'd get in before it gets dark and i'll be using hot water and putting a cooler on him after but i'm not sure if it's too cold.... however the other day he wouldn't come inside when it was raining and it was in the low 50's but then he didn't get soaked 'cause he had a sheet on...he could really use a bath but i don't want him to get chilled... what would you do if he was yours?

  • when's the best time to blanket clip a horse?

it seems like my horse's coat is getting heavier and heavier each winter and i don't want to deal with blow drying him and walking him around for 2 hours after every workout this winter like i did last winter... i'm thinking about giving him a blanket clip but i'm not sure if i should do it now or wait another month or 2.. we live in michigan and right now the temps are ranging from 60-30.. he'll be blanketed according to the weather.. he spends most of the day outside so i don't want to do a full body clip.. is there one pattern that would be better then another for a 16 yo hanoverian jumper? any and all ideas will be apreciated! thanks
