My mother-in-law is recently widowed and wants to sell some things to simplify her life. These are antiques that have definitely appreciated in value since she and her husband acquired them, but they kept no records of purchase dates and prices to use to determine a base value. So how does she go about determining a base value for these items in order to figure her capital gains?
