So my boyfriend's mom always tells him things like that he's fat but not bluntly. He always ends up agreeing with her and believing that she's right because his parents have torn him down so much. He also suffers from depression so I don't know why they do that!

The other day she says to me, "Have you gotten your grades? Oh, that's right. You're never home enough to get them are you?" It was laden with sarcasm. My parents were pissed and said she had no right mothering me. Then she brings up some girl my boyfriend knows to his friend, "Oh I think Bree is adorable!" My boyfriend said he was never interested in her. She says, "You have Holly," dryly. Like its a bad thing.

When his friend Abbey comes up from school she's so excited, "Abbey!! I havn't seen you in forever! You need to visit more." She never does that with me. My boyfriend says she likes me though.

So I was talking with my mom and she's like, "You guys can never have a long-term relationship. She would criticise you, or how you treat him, or your children!" (We're planning on getting married someday and my family understands it's a given.) I'm like, "We don't have to be around her!" She's like, "You can't avoid her and then come to family events. It'd be awkward." I said, "I care about him, not his mom. So I'm not going to break up with him over her."

I'm always nice to her. I never speak up. All I ever do is quietly defend him. I am so desperate that I am asking the opinion of strangers...=((

Does she hate me? What can I do? Is she trying to break us up? Does it make sense to stay? Am I headed for disaster? Should I break up with him, even though I love him, because of his crazy mother breaking us apart?

Some people have one, some don't. What is the tradition behind it? Do you need it? Why is it special? What purpose does it actually have?
