Mom
I have a almost 30 yr old step son that refuses to take showers or changes his clothes. Any idea's what to do?
Yes My husband's SON has MAJOR Personal Hygiene Issues!! He is almost 30 years old and he refuses to take a shower and change his clothes. He will be in the same clothes all week if you would let him and not change one time. He has other clothes in his drawers but he won't use them even. There has been many times that we have given him a ride and I gag at the smell of him. We gave him body wash and deodorant and etc to maybe help him. He is on SSI and so the income is very limited. He has a payee that takes care of his money but we think she is hoarding his money. My husband keeps telling me when he was a kid that he didn't like to take showers then either, but that to me now is a poor excuse. He has a new Girlfriend that just moved in with him and he was doing good at taking those showers in the beginning but now he has been very bad about it. He stinks and his breath smells and much much more. She doesn't think he is using the body wash or anything else in the shower. What the world do we do about this? His Dad and I have picked him up to take him somewhere and I about turn green because of the stench. His Girlfriend is about ready to sleep on the couch now because he refuses to do anything with his personal hygiene issues. He is on medications for mood stabilizers, he has a po from past issues when he was a teenager. I am not understanding why it is so hard to take a shower. I can't believe he can't smell himself!! Is there something wrong with his nose? Does he not think people can smell his body odor?? How can he wear his clothes over and over and OVER again when he has more clean clothes to wear? I have even washed his shirt and pants in the wash before we took his Girlfriend on a tubing down the river trip and I opened up my washer and it was like muddy water!! How digesting! So who do I go to to mention something about this? What can we do? His Girlfriend mentioned about taking a shower with him and she would scrub him down and she is 23 yrs old...I don't know if she is going to be able to handle the smell first thing in the shower even. YUCK - when she mentions anything he gives her a excuse saying that she is always on her video game so there! That is called an excuse and has nothing to do with personal hygiene - she is a beautiful gal and has a lot going for her and she is super clean like my husband and I.....so ANY IDEAS who we can go to, to get help with this? Or any ideas how we can kindly say "You stink or are very badly dirty.?" We are looking for help Please give any good advice how this can be handled so he doesn't scream at us.
