  • Rome: Total War running slower than before?

When I got my new computer, I tested out Rome Total war with max graphics, and loaded up the battlefield with I think 11 000 soldiers. Even at top detail, at triple speed, the game ran smooth. None of the hopping or skipping and enough FPS that I didn't notice anything. This was about 3 months ago

However, now I with about 6000 soldiers, and the game has low FPS even at normal speed, and at triple speed it does that annoying hopping and skipping.

According to my computer specs, this should not happen at all. I have an AMD fx-4100 quadcore processor, an Nvidia GTX 570 video card, and 16 GB of RAM. I have no viruses (that avira could detect) and my task manager has only the usual processes going on.

Does anyone have any idea why Rome is suddenly the most system-taxing game in the universe, according to my computer?

  • I'm thinking about Purchasing a Longbow?

I'd like to take up archery and I've always had the desire to own a classic yew longbow, but they're pretty hard to come by, especially in the draw weight that I want.

I've used a 60 pound recurve, and it seemed a little light and gutless. I don't necessarily need a battering ram, but I want something I can feel myself drawing. I was thinking I want maybe a 75 - 80 pound longbow, but the only provider I have where I live only sells them up to 55 pounds. Are there any good sites where I can order one that's customized to my specifications? I live in British Columbia, by the way, so I'd prefer something where I wouldn't have to pay 800 000 dollars on shipping.

    Thanks for any suggestions

  • Computer turns off randomly by itself?

I run windows xp, and my computer is LG brand, maybe from 2002 or 2003.

Just the past couple of days, my computer has started turning off by itself at random intervals. I mean, it turns COMPLETELY off; it stops running entirely and just stays off. Most of the time, it will turn off right at startup where it says "booting from disc failed. Booting from C:/ windows." However, if I get past that and the computer actually loads up, it may turn off anywhere from 5 minutes to 8 hours later. This has never happened to me before, and I have no idea what it is.

Another weird things is that after it turns off like this, to turn it back on, I actually have to hold the Turn On button (at the front of the tower) for about 8 seconds, release it, then press it again. Simply pressing or holding it by itself does nothing. This is also strange, since I've only ever had to press it to turn on the computer. The power cord is not loose, and the adapter is not malfunctioning, as everything else plugged into it stays on and running, as does my computer moniter.

While the computer was running for one of its extended periods, I scanned with Malwarebytes and Avira, and both came up negative for viruses. I also Defragmented and even restored it to about 2 weeks ago while in safe mode, and nothing has helped at all.

There is no warning before it shuts down; no pop-up, no strange sounds from the tower. It simply turns completely off out of nowhere.

I know it's not overheating, because I constantly (out of habit) reach down to the back of my tower and touch it. Most of the time, it's cool or cold, and even if it is warm, it's run much hotter many times before without actually turning off like it does now.

I haven't been doing anything new, or anything different that past couple days than I have the past few years I've owned it. I'm not trying to play any new games or load up any high-demand programs. Most of the time it crashes, I've just been on msn and had a few tabs of internet explorer open. I do occasionally download games and music, but I've scanned for viruses, and nothing has shown up.

    Anybody know what's happening?

  • Articles about Human nature, psychology, fear of the unknown, etc...?

I'm writing an essay, and I need sources (preferably ones with quotes, preferably from psychologists or other reputable authorities) that clearly say that humans are naturally suspicious, or that they have a natural fear of the unknown, or that they are drawn to mystery.

In general, any good articles/journals about Human psychology and nature might be useful. Just a simple list of places I can go to look for the information. A google search and an Academic Search Premier search haven't given me what I want.

  • Which martial art should I go into?

I'm just looking for a basic combat-orientated martial art that teaches punching, kicking, and all the right spots to hit. I'm not looking so much for a lifestyle change, just something to sharpen up my coordination and confidence, and work on my muscular endurance. Something like what the military teaches is what I'd like. Any suggestions?

  • Road hockey goalie: Shoes to rollerblades?

I play in net in road hockey games, and I've always played in shoes. I bought pad sizes (30") that suit me perfectly for playing in shoes. However, I want to learn to rollerblade and play in those. I'm wondering if switching to blades will force me to get a bigger pad size. I went through a lot of trouble to get my 30's, and I'd hate to have chuck 'em and get a paltry upgrade in size just to accomodate my other equipment.

Any input at all for this?

  • Hockey goalie Reflexes/Reactions?

Just a few months ago I began playing street hockey, and decided I wanted to be a goalie. For a guy of 4 months experience, I'm actually very good. My butterfly is good, and so is my positioning/technique for the most part.

My reactions were good to begin with as well, but they are nothing like actual goaltenders'. Are those reactions/reflexes trained into them, or do they just have them naturally? Are they something I can start learning/training at 19 years old? (goaltending related, specifically) or am I doomed to be a lesser player?

I'd also like to know exactly HOW goalies track the puck. So far I either anticipate and make percentage saves, or I wait to see where the ball itself is actually heading before I make a move to stop it. Are those the only two ways, or do more experienced goalies know how to read the body/stick of the player to figure out where the shot is aimed before/right when it's fired off?

One last question: how on earth do you stop shots that come from close in? When I play, about 90% of the shots I face come from 6 - 10 feet away, and I can almost never react to them because they go just too fast. Most of my saves are positioning and luck, or the shooter just doesn't throw a full wrist-shot/slap-shot (in which case I CAN react to it).

An answer or input to any one of these questions would be great. Any tips on street hockey goaltending would also be welcome.

    Thanks a lot

  • Starcraft II: Wings of liberty installation problem (from disc)?

I recently purchased Starcraft II from EB games, but I've been having trouble actually installing the game onto my computer. The first couple of times, it got to either 3% or 5% and would stop installing. The message would be "please insert starcraft II disc 1" or something of that sort. You can imagine my confusion as there is only 1 disc that comes with the game, and it was already in there installing.

I tried cancelling, deleting all folders, then reinstalling about 4 times, and every time that message would appear in the same place. So I went to EB Games and bought a new disc (both were completely devoid of any scratches, damage, or dirtiness) and the SAME thing happened several times again, in the same place (3 OR 5 % installed)

I got my computer wiped and reformatted just before attempting the installs, but that's not the problem. I installed 4 major and demanding programs before trying starcraft II (Medieval II: total war, Left 4 dead and Left 4 dead 2, and Reason 4.0) without having any problems whatsoever.

All my computer specs match or exceed the minimum requirements for the game as well.

I can't find any direct answers to this problem on the internet, so if anybody else has had this problem too, please help me out.

    Thanks

  • How to buckle up hockey pads?

I was wondering what the best way is to buckle up street hockey pads for playing a vaguely butterfly style. I've ran through Yahoo answers and I've seen "buckle them up tight up top, and loose all the way down from there" and "buckle them loose up top, and tight all the way down from there." You can understand my confusion.

I've played with them on tight, and though they don't butterfly at all, they're very comfortable and rigid standing up. When I buckle them on loose, they butterfly perfectly, but sometimes stay sideways when I stand up, and flop all over the place with the slightest movement. (I wear the Reebok SR 2K 34" pads, by the way)

I was wondering what way I should do it if I want a decent butterfly (I butterfly a lot for a ball hockey goalie) and also want them to stay relatively straight and solid while standing up.

And again, any other goalie-related input or tips would be appreciated

  • Hockey goaltending equipment customization?

I just recently bought a cheap set of ball hockey goaltending equipment (34" pads, a new trapper and a new blocker, all Reebok SR 2K). They are dominantly black and silver, with highlighted streaks of white.

I was wondering if there was a way to change some or all of the white streaks to neon green with any sort of paint or dye or anything. I know it's an odd question, but I'm a customization connoisseur, and I'd really like to do this.

Any other input you guys might have about hockey goaltending or hockey in general would be welcome here as well.

    Thanks in advance

  • Where to buy Cheap Ball hockey equipment?

Just wondering what places have a good array of relatively cheap ball hockey equipment, specifically for goaltenders. I've been to Walmart and Canadian tire, and though they're cheap, all the stuff is too small for me (and I'm a pretty short guy). My Canadian Tire set cost me about 150 bucks, and since I only play for fun/as a hobby, I don't really want to spend upwards of 400 dollars on anything.

I'd also rather buy in-store rather than have to order online, but don't hesitate to send me any URLs, as those too would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

  • Road hockey goaltending: butterfly on asphault?

I'm interested in playing some road hockey games as goaltender, and so far through practising I've found that I can't properly butterfly on asphault. When I go down into the "butterfly" position, I find that my pads don't go completely perpendicular to the ground, but are angling forwards at about 45 - 55 degrees, and there is always a large, triangular hole in my 5 hole, even when I pull the pads together.

I've never received coaching, so I'm not sure if it's my technique or if it's my cheap equipment ($60 pads, Canadian Tire special). Are cheap pads like these able to be used for butterflying? They are quire soft compared to what I expected, but since I have no experience playing with any others, I can't say for sure.

Also, any tips on goaltending would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  • Good way to make cheap Hockey Jerseys?

I'm going to visit some friends for a couple of weeks, and I wanted to play a few road hockey games with them. I was wondering if anybody had any advice on how to make jerseys for each team? I'm not looking for Professional quality nylon super-material jerseys, I just want each team to have a look. Do any of you know any ways to make some simple jerseys? Any material/shirts I could use, and what type of colouring to use

  • Playing as a goalie in NHL 10?

I just recently bought NHL 10 and, because I have a fetish for goalies, am constantly playing the position myself. However, I find that the CPU does most of the work, even with the "CPU aid" setting on hardcore (supposedly doesn't help you at all). Even if I just stand in the crease without moving the controls, at least 75% of the saves will be made.

I was wondering if there is anyway to turn this bothersome aspect down or completely off?

Another thing I've noticed is I only receive an average of 10 - 20 shots per game, usually less, yet I still let in 3 - 4 goals (because of those dreaded cross-crease passes) I was wondering if there is any way to increase the oppositions' shots-per-game as well? ( I play 10 minute periods)

Any other random tips on playing goalie in NHL 10 would be appreciated as well.

I'm asking this question in Sports because nobody answered it in the video games section. I figured lots of hockey fans would have the game.

    Anyway, Thanks!

  • How to dress Business Casual (for men)?

I've got a particular female friend who finds business casual dress the sexiest outfit on men. However I have a laughable sense of style, and often buy my plain clothing in bulk from walmart. I was wondering if anybody could give me some tips and examples on how to dress business casual. Pictures would be appreciated as well, if that's possible.

  • Burning calories due to temperature?

Due to the fact that humans are warm-blooded animals, we burn calories even at rest just to keep our body temperature steady. It makes sense to me that if one resides in colder temperature, then one must burn more calories to keep their body temperature at 38 celcius. Because of this, I spend a lot of my time in the cold to help keep me trim (I know it doesn't help a ton, but hey, whatever) I set my thermostat as low as I can, (about 10 degrees celcius) and open my bedroom window all the time, especially in winter, and sleep in the cold with the fan on. I also go outside wearing as little clothing as possible (yes, that means shorts and a T in double digit negatives) just to get maximum benefits.

Questions are: How much am I actually benefitting from this? How much energy does your body actually use in cold temperatures? (also I know water saps energy from you 23 times faster than air of the same temperature, so I take cold showers and swim in cold water when I can)

And: Although it makes sense that you burn more calories in cold temperature, why is it that people (such as the Inuit) who live in cold temperatures generally have more fat?

    Thanks in advance

  • Heavy lifting for muscle growth?

I'm a rugby player in an extended off-season, and so building muscle mass is priority in my workout regime right now. I know lifting heavy gets makes you big, but I've heard things like "you have to take a break" and "you have to lift light or you'll overtrain" yada yada yada. I'm going to lay out my basic workout plan and habits, and then explain them a bit more:

Monday - Chest, Triceps, upper back, biceps

    Tuesday - Legs

Wednesday - Upper back, chinups, biceps

    Thursday - Chest, triceps

    Friday - Deadlifts, legs, biceps

    Saturday - chest, triceps

    Sunday - Legs

Bear with me, this question is going to trail on for a bit longer. Now the reason I don't do shoulders is because I do this workout for two weeks, and then a similar workout that replaces chest with shoulders the next two weeks. The reason I do upper back so much is because it heals quickly and grows fast; same as my biceps. I do legs 3 times a week because it's important to me, both for looks and performance, and I do chest 3 times a week because mine grows embarassingly slowly. I also do biceps with deadlifts on friday because deadlifts work my forearms hard, so I like to burn them out on the same day as I do biceps, and let them rest the day before/after.

Most of my workouts consist of exercises that I do for either 3 or 5 sets, and I use weights I can only lift 4 - 6 times in a row. I do abs every day, but they're only 15 - 20 minutes long and consist more of a bunch of different 30 rep exercises, and isometric planks.

The way I've laid out this out is good specifically for my body and it's strengths/weaknesses/healing rate, and there is very little - no overlap of of fatiguing muscle groups.

The reason I'm asking this question is because I'm wondering if, overall, lifting heavy like that every day, (even with at least an off day's rest between doing the same muscle group) is considered overtraining and is going to set me back. Each day I spend about 1:30 hours working out, not including cardio, or 15 - 20 minutes of abs everyday.

Just to clarify: even taking into account the fact that I have a day's rest or more between muscle groups, is this workout plan overtraining my body?

  • Honda civic '95 coupe D15B7 modding?

I'm wondering what kind of things would be good specifically for getting power out of a D15B7 engine. I'm no longer interested in a swap due to cost and effort, and although I would like to put a small turbo on eventually, I'm looking for suggestions other than the big gain choices. The cylinders has already been slightly bored and the head has been shaved, and the car has a cold air intake and an aftermarket muffler. In the near future I intend to put in a Hondata chip and a light flywheel and streetracing clutch.

I'm just looking for suggestions to tweak and modify the engine and other parts of the car to gain little bits of power here and there. I'm looking to spend anywhere from 3000 - 5000 dollars, but I wouldn't mind hearing your suggestions no matter how expensive they may be. The car is a 5 speed manual, by the way.

    Thanks
