  • Help! My Dog's Paw Pad is Split Open!?

I went to the vet a few days ago because my puppy split her paw open the other day. They bandaged her up and sent her home with me. I follow their instructions of changing her bandage twice a day, cleaning it with hydrogen peroxide, and then putting polysporin on the cut before putting the new bandage on. Her cut does not seem to be infected at all, it isn't bleeded anymore at all, and everything seems fine except that it is still wide open. They did not put stitches in because they said it was be ineffective. I am afraid it isn't healing well and when I called with my worry they kind of blew me off.

Those of you with experience with paw pad cuts, what did you experience during the healing process, did it take a while to "come together"? I am so worried! I think it's going to heal separated.

  • No stitches in the paw?

My dog sliced her paw open (on the pad) yesterday and today at the vet they cleaned and bandaged it up as I had already done. I was frustrated because I thought she would get antibiotics and stitches or something, instead I paid $40 for my vet to do what I had already done.

My vet does not put stitches in cuts in the pads because they are ineffective. Is this something standard or is my vet choosing not to put stitches in my dog's cut?

He said it would heal on it's own and told me to keep doing what I had been doing. It is sliced open! Have you had any experiences like this? Should I go to another vet?

  • My dog cut her paw, help!?

I'm taking my St Bernard puppy (6 months old) to the vet tomorrow afternoon at 5 - that was the earliest time they could fit me in, however I am asking advice for until she's in the vet's care.

She was at the lake and cut her paw on what I can only guess was glass. It's her big pad on her front paw. It appears to be a shallow but wide cut, about the size of the tip of my middle finger. It bled like crazy. It clotted quickly but would bleed easily again if she walked on it without a bandage. (the first one at the lake wouldn't stay on)

As of now, I have clean it with water first (to remove sand and dirt) then I cleaned it thoroughly with hydrogen peroxide. After all visible dirt was gone and it was clotted, I put polysporin on the cut, then wrapped a bandage around it. The bandage is snug but not tight and wrapped in tape to hold it in place.

She's not messing with it or anything. But I'm scared she might have tiny pieces of glass in her pad and it'll heal some before the appointment.

Do you have any advice for me in this situation? The EARLIEST possible vet appointment is tomorrow at 5pm and that's including other vets in the area. I am worried about tiny pieces of glass in the cut, possible infection, etc. What should I keep an eye out for, or continue to do until the appointment?

  • Spay and Neuter Question?

How many cases of an animal dying of complications during or after a spaying/neutering procedure done by a humane society clinic? The reason I ask is that it will cost around $300 to have my St Bernard (6 months - 60 lbs) spayed and I asked the vet about getting her fixed at the humane society for $55-$70. He told me that in order for them to be able to neuter and spay for so cheap is that they eliminate all of the monitoring equipment, pre tests, etc. from the procedure. It's literally covering the cost of anesthesia and the surgery.

Obviously if there was a high risk of complications, they wouldn't be doing it anymore. I was just wondering if you knew any sources or stories about this? I did a quick google search and failed to find anything, so sources are appreciated!

    Thank you!

  • Why does my stomach hurt?

I will wake up in the mornings and my stomach will be very sore, almost like I did a heavy work out the day before or someone punched me in the stomach the night before. Once I get up and move around it goes away. This happens a few times a week and has happen ever since I can remember, so it's obviously not anything life threatening. It's NOT an ulcer or anything like that because I've had it my whole life.

I'm coming to Y!A because WebMD wasn't giving me ANYTHING.

Does anyone else have this or know what I'm talking about? I found a few entries online in other forums and they describe exactly what I am saying but no one is able to give them an answer either.

Dr. Michael W. Fox DVM - "Adverse vaccination reactions resulting in disease (so called vaccinosis) include injection-site fibro- sarcomas in cats, and various immune-system dysfunction diseases, possibly hyperthyroidism, inflammatory bowel disease, various chronic skin conditions and kidney disease. More research has been done in dogs, where certain breeds and lines are particularly prone to develop vaccinosis. Conditions associated with same include encephalitis, seizures, polyneuropathy ( weakness, incoordination and muscle atrophy), hypertrophic osteodystrophy (shifting lameness and painful joints), autoimmune thyroiditis and hypothyroidism, liver, kidney and bone marrow failure variously associated with autoimmune hemolytic anemia, immune mediated thrombocytopenia."

  • What is a home remedy for my dog's allergic reaction?

My dog has been scratching all night long. We were in a new place last night and I think something there bothered her. Then this morning she began to scratch her eye a lot and now it is REALLY swollen. I can't tell if the other eye is swollen as well, it could be, but in comparison to the other one, it still looks small.

I would like to know if Benadryl is safe for my dog to aid in relief of this reaction. Any help?
