  • What should I buy a friend that is going on a trip to Europe?

I have a friend. She is about to embark on a tour of Europe for a month and I would like to buy her something for her trip. I'm looking for something more inspiring than a travel book or a universal electrical plug. I have been thinking about this for awhile and cannot come up with anything. Please let me know if you can think of anything.

  • How do I get EDTA out of a solution containing carbohydrates, hormones, peptides?

I am looking for a signalling molecule in phloem sap extract. The signalling molecule can be carbohydrate, hormone or peptide in nature. The problem is that the extraction buffer used for phloem sap extraction has to contain EDTA and this disrupts the bio-assay that I am using to search for this signalling molecule, so it needs to be removed after exudation.

I have looked up methods for recovering EDTA (doi:10.1016/S0304-3894(03)00268-1) by acidifying the solution with concentrated H2SO4 (pH<3) which precipitates H4EDTA (removes about 90-95%). I have an issue because adding conc. H2SO4 can react with sugars and other compounds.

Does any body know a way of removing EDTA without resulting in unwanted reactions?

EDTA Conc. of exudation buffer = 20mM

  • My lock screen battery that I changed using Winterboard changes to my wallpaper when not plugged in.?

I recentely jailbroke my iPhone 3GS (3.1.2 firmware) and downloaded Winterboard. I then downloaded a batter icon and activated it in Winterboard. While plugged into my computer I can see my lock screen batter icon I chose from Rock. When not plugged in it shows no battery icon, and it shows my default iPhone background (the picture of the Earth). Why is it doing this and how can I make the battery icon not disappear?

  • Why is my t-dist statistic not working?

K, so I keep repeating this questions and keep getting (-0.19275,1.19275) as my interval. I'm using the non-pooled t-dist statistic because the population SD is unknown but the sample SD are known. I understand that delta is the degrees of freedom I should be using. So why is the answer A?

Researchers compared two groups of competitive rowers—a group of skilled rowers and a group of novices. The researchers measured the angular velocity of each subject's right knee, which describes the rate at which the knee joint opens as the legs push the body back on the sliding seat. The sample sizes, the sample means, and the sample variances for the two groups are given below.

    Group (n; Mean; Variance)

    Skilled 16; 4.2; 0.36

    Novice 16; 3.7; 0.64

The data showed no strong outliers or strong skewness. 99% confidence interval for the difference between two population means is?

    (A) (-0.1875, 1.1875) (B) (-0.0048, 1.0048)

    (C) (-0.0019, 1.0019) (D) (0.1927, 1.1927)

  • What am I doing wrong in my workout routine?

I'm 22, 5'6 and about 170lbs. I've recently taken up the initiative to become an leaner and healthier person. For the past month I've embarqued on a routine of running about 30 min (about 1.5 miles) three days a week. I've cut caloric intake, by cutting out sugars and regulating portion size. I've also include other activities, such as hiking and biking into the equation, but somehow I'm not seeing the results I want. I have lost some girth, but my weight seems to always hover around that 170. Should I continue doing what I'm doing? or is it just not enough to make an impact? I want to remain healthy so my goal is slow progress, but is this an indicator of slow progress or none at all?

  • Something strange in my aquarium!?

I have a 3 month old saltwater aquarium, with a few polyps, a couple of fish and a hand ful of snails and hermit crabs. I looked in my aquarium today and to my surprise there are small greenish-brown tubes about 3mm talk with 12-15 feather like extensions coming out the top! They're in my gravel and on some of the live rocks! I was told to expect random creatures in my tank, so I'm delighted to see my aquarium maturing, but what are these?

  • What to do with my saltwater aquarium after an ich infestation?

I have a saltwater aquarium, and sadly most of my fish died before treatment was successful. What ever remaining fish I do have have been isolated. I did some online reading and it is suggested that I wait 6-9 weeks before attempting to introduce any fish back into the tank. I heard that increasing the salinity and temperature of the water will help quicken the eradication of ich, but I also have snails and anemone in there. Should I remove them as well? Or should i go on to increasing the salinity and temperature? Is waiting 6 - 9 weeks correct?
