  • Am I just crazy? or is it my wife? (rather long) but gripping!!?

My wife, and our 3 step children make up our family ( use that term family lightly of late), of which I have been a part of for 7 years. I was not the brightest teenager so I got in some pretty good trouble with the law. I was in jail and had a lot of time to think about how step by step my life lead up to that point.

That said, I can be pretty tough on the kids having seen what simple wrong decisions can lead to. The kids are a daughter 22, with 3 awesome daughters of her own. A son 20, great kid with a BIG heart, worked since he was 15 just because he wanted to. Then we arrive at the 16 year old who will be a focus of this question. I have ALWAYS treated all 3 equally, that is HONEST, and have had blowups ( you know, the rebellious teen and the "Your not my father" blowups ) with all three. And to this day the 22 yo daughter, and the 20 yo son and I all respect each other very much. Now my wife and I are on the verge of divorce over the 16 yo. And here is why. He is lazy, he is disrespectful, he is self centered, and will take the easiest way out of ANY situation not going his way. School is the biggest issue at the moment with him. He has failed his first two years of high school to date, actually cries to his mother ( real tears now ) about how hard the school work is. Now when he was in middle school he was hooked on a Playstation game called S.O.C.O.M U.S navy seals and played online. When his grades dropped in middle school I pressured his mom to get him focused back on his grades so she took his Playstation from him. BAM two weeks was all it took and he pulled his grades back up!! His teacher back then said that he made of the fastest progress of any student she had seen. So this child isn't dumb!! Back to now, he and I don't even speak to each other. That may sound drastic, but I have bent over backwards to be this child's friend, and he throws it away EVERY TIME. Its time he stood up and put forth some effort here. OK, so first two years of high school failed, an he has spent maybe a total of 7 nights here at home since the end of school last year. His mother lets him stay at his cousins house like two miles away. Maybe I am crazy but that just drives me nuts!! She won't ground him or anything to get him to realize he needs to get an education!! I ask her why, and she tells me "well I wouldn't want to stay here either with someone who won't talk to me!" So to boil that down, I am the excuse to not care if our son gets an education? I love kids, but I don't like WHO he is, and that is not to say he can't change, I know he can, I know he isn't living up to 1/100th of his potential. He needs to start taking things seriously because this world isn't getting any easier to live in!!. My wife blames everything on the fact that he and I don't get along, that is her excuse to not do anything about his grades, or the fact that he really isn't even a part of this family anymore. He comes home, takes a shower, changes his clothes and is out the door till the next day he comes home to shower and change again!! OK, to the question, Have I lost my mind, or does it seem like she has an issue with disciplining our youngest son?
