  • Stimulus for baby born '08?

We had a baby in Feb 08, my understanding is that the stimulus payment of 300.00 from last year will be payed this year. Question, is that added to the amount of our regular refund, or sent separately? Our tax preparer is curious as well, he didn't know the answer.

  • Baby Cruising at 7 Months! Help?

My baby girl has just started pulling herself up on furniture and has been cruising for about a week. I think this is wonderful at such a young age (just turned 7 months on the 28th), but I am also concerned because of the level of anxiety it has caused for both of us.

She gets anxious because she's afraid to get down and ends up falling if I don't help her. Then she crawls right back to the table and pulls herself up again only to repeat the episode of anxiety.

I get anxious because she is and also because I am constantly comforting her when she falls or helping her down before she falls. In either case she goes right back to doing it again so it seems like a never ending cycle :)

My question: Do I just let her fall until she learns to get down without tumbling? She will happily stand there for 15-20 minutes eating peas or cheerios or playing, but will start to whine, fuss and say ma ma ma ma ma ma ma until she falls or I help her down. It is the coffee table she has learned to pull up on, and is on carpet. I've pulled the table out into the middle of the living room so she can't hit anything except it or carpet on the way down. The table has all rounded corners and so I don't believe it will cut her, but she has banged her head on the floor and table a few times now. After being comforted she goes right back to it. Sometimes she doesn't cry at all, I think alot of her response depends on her mood and whether she's nursed or napped recently.

I feel bad letting her fall, but how else do they learn to do it themselves?

    Any suggestions?

  • Lifter Clatter?

My 2001 Chevy Prism has started making quite a bit of engine clatter suddenly, but seems to be running just fine. What is the possibility that this is a lifter problem? Is it safe to drive for a couple more weeks or is this a fix it now kind of thing? Assuming that a lifter is to blame, is this a spendy fix?

    Thx, all.

  • Does the Umbilical Cord Have Sensation?

I've wondered this a few times, does anyone know the answer?

Does it even have pain or pressure sensing nerves? If so, who feels it? The baby or mother?

Probably a dumb question but I find the idea fascinating that baby and mother share an temporary organ that really belongs to neither.

  • Anybody Ever Let Their Small Baby Taste Food?

    Hey, all-

My 3 month old is always watching us eat, and so I occasionally will dip a finger in sauce or soup or rub a piece of fruit, veggie or meat on her lips and she licks it like crazy :)

It isn't enough to actually ingest, but just a "taste". She seems to like the taste of everything, but particularily the taste of sweet, probably because I'm breastfeeding so it's familiar.

I avoid any foods with obvious allergic danger of course.

Anyone else do this, and is there a clear danger to it? I've never noticed any digest upset (though I imagine she is getting hardly anything). It's so cute I can't resist giving her a taste of something every few days!

    :)

  • Does This Sound Like Early Teething?

    Hey, all-

Baby is just shy of 3 months and for the last week or so she has been drooling alot, chewing her fingers, irritable (which she hardly *ever* is), changing mood almost instantly, and pulling off the breast alot. She seemed so upset and in pain tonight that I gave her a dose of tylenol which seemed to help. If I put my finger in her mouth she will try to chew it rather than sucking it like usual.

I rubbed her gums some with a cold cloth, and she seemed to like that- any other ideas? She doesn't use a binky so that's out. She is too little to reliably grasp things to chew on yet.

I don't see or feel anything erupting, but her behavior is definately something new.

    So 3 questions-

    1. Does this sound like teething?

    2. Any ideas besides the cold cloth?

    3. Is it safe to give tylenol days in a row if she seems that miserable? (giving only .4ml at a time).

I hate this because she is usually the most happy, mellow baby in the world and she just seems miserable :(

  • I Have Terrible PPD (Please Read!)?

I never thought I would admit it, but I have really bad PPD, that is- Post Partum *Dementia*!!!

What is it about having a baby that makes me so slow and well, quite frankly... dumb (or at least forgetful and scatter brained)?

I asked my hubby if he could please vacuum the lawn and he just stood there looking at me like I was a new and mildly interesting life form. Then I put my eye glasses in the fridge- took me 2 hours of looking to find them and when I did it was just because I wanted my Gatoraide. Drat!

Anyone else had "PPD"? Does it ever go away!

  • Arguments against Female Circumcision?

I just had a thought tonight when reading another post. The poster had stated that baby boys were much easier to clean than girls when changing diapers (because of all the labial folds I assume.)

It got me thinking about circumcision and how cleanliness is so often used as a reason to justify male circumcision. It is the reason most sited in all the circ posts I have read. Females get smegma too and have *many* more folds and crevices than males.

I am personally very against any circumcision of any sort but I have to wonder about the double standard and how hypocritical it is.

    Here's my Q-

Why isn't surgical female circumcision acceptable in the western world? (assuming a clinical setting)

Why is it illegal in the western world while male circumcision is still acceptable?

Just curious about some of your thoughts.

  • Left or Right Handed?

My 2 month old has started reaching out for objects the last couple of weeks- I notice that she *definately* favors the left hand. Any other parents noticed this? Did your baby turn out to be left handed?

We set up her play gym last week and even when she wants a dangling object on her right she is reaching out further with her left hand.

  • What Kind of Flowering Tree is This?

Anyone have any ideas? We are in Washington state and have snow and hard freezes in the winter so it is hardy. It has reached about 15 feet in 5 years from a small sapling.

  • Why an Apple Tree Wouldn't Bloom?

We have 3 apple trees in a row. The middle one has no blossoms! We did have a fairly hard freeze after the blossoms had set but the one tree hadn't set any blossoms that I could see anyway. They just never seemed to develop at all. Any ideas why two trees would be absolutely loaded but the one wouldn't set at all?

They all blossomed and fruited very well last year.

Here is a pic of the difference.

    http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g193/reefshadow/...

We don't fertilize but do lay out mulch every fall. Our soil is very rich and this town is the apple capitol of the world so it isn't climate or soil or the wrong zone for apples.

  • Reaching Milestones?

I am curious when you guys observed your baby reaching early milestones, particularily reaching for objects, holding head up, and social smiling (smiling back at you).

I am just wondering if my baby is developing a bit ahead of the curve at this point. She has been social smiling and able to hold her head up unsupported (but a leeetle wobbly) and track objects since 4-5 weeks, and at 8 weeks just started reaching for stationary objects above her. She reaches out with closed fists 70 percent of the time and clumsily grasping fingers the other 30 percent. She hasn't succeeded in doing any more than batting the object but gets very excited when she hits it, pumping her legs and panting :)

She seems very near to rolling over, her rooting reflex is so strong she will often fling herself sideways and it's only a matter of time before she succeeds in flipping over, i'm sure.

I get so excited each time she starts doing something new

  • Girls!!!! Why Do You Have Poor Self-Esteem!!??

Why, oh why is every other question in this forum a rate me type scenario?!

Many of you look slutty, the rest look fine. Some more pretty than others, but really, who the hell cares??? In my experience, truly ugly people are quite rare.

Why not try and cultivate some self esteem that isn't dependant on a man's sexual response to you or another woman's jealousy? It is ridiculous. I wonder if I was that egocentric when I was a teen? I really don't think so.

Jeezus, get out there and learn something real and lasting about yourselves. Beauty is nice while it lasts, but all the tanning, extensions and manipeds in the world are not going to keep you into your 40's and beyond. Hell, they won't even keep you happy into your 20's.

  • Tell Me Your Phobias And Aversions!!!!?

I have 2 very strong, weird aversions, but no phobias. Please give me a star for coming clean to the anonymous world of the internet.

    Mine are:

Cotton balls! I hate the texture of raw cotton, how it is dry and pulls apart. Touching it makes me grit my teeth and feel queasy. I have to have my husband take the cotton out of pill bottles. Q tips are fine as long as I don't touch the tips.

Chalk. It is dusty and so dry. I hate touching it, it gives me the same feeling as the cotton, just makes me clench my teeth and feel a bit sick. I also hate the accessories of chalk, the dreaded chalk eraser and the chalk board. Ick.

I say these are aversions because they don't inspire terror, rather a strong disgust. I would rather not touch them but I can.

OK, so what are yours? I'll give thumbs up for all answers!

  • Melons on a trellis?

Anyone had success growing trellised melons? I have a 16x20 foot aluminum trellis that can take alot of weight and it would be a real space saver to grow them vertically. I know it can be done, but my specific question is: have you? And can I use old stockings to support the melons? Shelves for them would be a bit beyond me and if stockings won't work I'll just do a level bed instead of trellis.

    I'm growing

    Hales best cantaloupe

    sugar baby watermelon

    honey dews

Will stockings work for the watermelon? 8-10 pounds each

Will smaller melons 2-4 pounds be ok unsupported?

    Thanks!

  • Stimulus Rebate Owed Back Next Year??

The last 5 years we have owed a small amount (usually around 200.00). This upcoming tax year (2008) we will probaby be sue a refund though, because of the birth of our daughter in feb, and the fact that I am no longer working.

Is it true that the stimulus payment is counted as an advance on next years return? In other words, if the amount of our next years return is less than the stimulus payment, will we owe the gov money?
