Tips on writing an opening monologue?
I really want to start the novel I'm working on with a monologue narrated by the protagonist in first person. It's something I've never personally tackled, so I was looking for some advice on writing one? I don't want it to be extremely long, and the novel is written in present tense so that's another challenge. I originally wanted it to be told from when she's older and looking back on her life, but I'm not too sure I'm comfortable with the tense change.
Any tips?

Help with a character's physical appearance?
The best I can describe her appearance is similar to that of the actress Ashley Rickards. I know, I know - she's not spot on. However, the character is BASED off her appearance. I'm horrible at finding unique ways to describe characters, so I need some help. Nothing like three paragraphs of description, just some unique ways to describe her so the character get's the general idea of what she looks like.
I know not to do it in one paragraph, and how to place it within a story. It's the actual words and phrases and trouble me, not the format. I need phrases and words. Like "doe-eyed" and "slender".

The character is part Native American, so her appearance will vary slightly in that way.

She's an older woman, in her fifties, that's the mother of my protagonist and plays a vital part of the story. She's verbally abusive and focused on status and artificial beauty, so she's kind of an antagonist. She constantly insults and taunts her rebellious and stubborn daughter, but in a sick kind of way, it's only because she loves her and wants the best for her. She regrets a lot of things in her life, and never tells her daughter (or the reader) why her husband disappeared. She keeps a lot of secrets and is very shady, and also tries to hide any kind of weakness or regret in herself and her daughter to protect the family name.
As for her physical appearance, she's a regal looking woman that always wears her blonde hair pulled back and styled perfectly. She also has a frail build and is a chain smoker.

I always have a really hard time when describing the physical attributes of my protagonist. To help me out, I always model their appearance after someone in real life. This particular character is modeled after Shailene Woodley. Any suggestions or words to help me describe her?
Also:
I've matched her up with my character already based on personality. I know where and how to include detail, as I'm very experienced with writing novels, but I'm stuck on words and phrases to do so. I don't want to say she's brunette. Boring, you know?
I also already know specific attributes she will have that are under the influence of the plot, but I need help with general description. Please and thankies!

The desert and its symbolism plays a huge part the in book. I'm not going to give much away, but it's a romance that involves a rebellion, being a prisoner, and an arranged marriage.
Any ideas? I have some of my own, but I want opinions.

I've always had a hard time describing my characters' physical appearance. Any advice or words to help me describe my protagonist? I always 'model' them after a picture of a real person to help me out. This one in particular looks like Britne Oldford.

She's the first bi-racial (very important plot point) character I've ever written about, so she's giving me a little bit more trouble than I've had in the past with descriptions. She's the focus of the story, so I want her to be very impactful. Any suggestions?
1 AnswerBooks & Authors9 years agoIs it worth learning stick shift?
I've had my license for a little over a year and a half and have yet to get a car, making life extremely difficult for me and my mom (we share her van). We're constantly switching back and forth. I'm currently unable to work, due to after school activities that prevent me from having spare time on the weekdays. I can't give them up to make money and buy a car, due to the fact that most of them will probably lead to scholarships. My father is extremely stingy about buying me a car, as he claims he has the money but just doesn't want to spend it on a vehicle. I noticed that stick shift cars are a lot cheaper than automatics and I was wondering if learning stick would be worth the money saved when buying a car? If so, my dad might be in favor of buying me one, as I need the car to get to practice and home from school.

so i'm writing a modern romance novel and i'm kind of stuck on the subplot portion. i have the main plot (the love story), but i'm still looking for that other story that's going on at the same time. every romance novel has one. for example, in the last song, the dad is dying. does anyone have any general ideas? i'm not going to give away too much of the main plot, but it's based in modern times in a small town, and one of the themes is the contrast between following tradition and doing what you want to do with your life. it is a romance, and it's strongly inspired by rock and roll. there are lots of drugs, fights, etc. the main characters are in high school. any good ideas for me? i just need another storyline going to keep things interesting ... oh, and i don't want anything too cliche, you know?
