  • Having a tough time keeping the cold side of my tank above 70 degrees at night....PLEASE HELP?

sorry for the caps, but this is important.....I have a California Kingsnake and he is about 6 months old. He is my first snake and he has been great so far, I have done all the research needed to care for a snake and I know the desired temperature for this snake is 85-90 degrees on the warm side and 75-80 degrees on the cold side. I am able to keep the temperatures constant during the day; however, at night I cant keep the cold side any higher than 70-71 degrees ( some cases it gets even colder). I don't know what to do and I live in Arizona and i know its winter but still....how do people in colder states keep their temps constant. So now for my questions, is it really that bad happening to everyone and I'm just freaking out? If not, how bad is it? and does it have long term affects? and if so what? How can i prevent this from happening?

Again thank you and any input is useful....

  • How much does it cost to feed a California Kingsnake on a monthly and weekly basis?

Im not sure if I am going to feed it live or pre-killed frozen rodents but if possible both answers would be great. I bought a 60 gallon tank so I could avoid getting 2 different tanks (I still have a separate feeding quarters) ....my question is keeping a younger snake in a larger tank effect the snake at all? My last question is it bad to use both newspaper and carefresh bedding as substrate, and would the newspaper be burned by my under tank heating pad?

Thank you so much...this will be my first snake so all your responses are greatly appreciated
