  • Do I owe my old roommate money?

This is an addendum to a previous question. After months and months of searching I was unable to find a roommate to replace one that moved out in June. Due to the fact that I was paying $1300 a month in rent by myself I could not afford to refund the previous roommate's deposit. Now I made the choice to move out a few weeks ago because I could no longer afford it. I was solely responsible for cleaning and returning the house into the proper condition although I was not entitled to a deposit refund as I had not paid a deposit. I could have just packed up and left. In addition to this I acted as storage for my previous roommate, as he intended to return in a year (he moved for school) Can I deduct any of this from what he says I owe him? That is if I even owe him any money at all? Or should I just tell him to take it up with the leasing company?

  • What are my rights in regards to refunding a deposit to a former roommate?

I had a roommate move out and he feels that he is entitled to nearly double the amount he put up for a security deposit due to the fact that his original roommate skipped out and left her half. Doesn't that get forfeited to the leasing company?
