  • What was the cause of the cold war?

Im just curious and want to make sure I understand this.. In the simplest explanation, the cold war occurred because the Soviet Union (Russia) influenced communism on their "sector" that was divided to them post-WWII. Is this correct? Thank you for your help.

  • Marine Corps guaranteed aviation slot?

For the past 9 months, I've been pursuing the United States Marine Corps PLC Air contract. I was selected and accepted into the program 3 weeks ago. It's what I want to do, it's my dream. I want to serve my duty in the U.S. military, in the USMC, and as a pilot. I will go to OCS this summer in Quantico for 6 weeks, then next summer for 6 weeks. I will then commission, go to basic, and so long as I make it to and through OCS and Basic, I'm "guaranteed" orders to flight school. It still seems a bit too good to be true. Is there any other catch to it? Like do I need to be re-evaluated and approved to go to flight school after basic? I know I need to have a clean record, uphold a 2.0 GPA, etc... but do I still need to be excessively competitive? I plan to continue to strive for excellence academically and physically, for sure.

I'm just uneasy about it. Is there a catch? Or am I good to go as long as I do what I need to do? If something goes wrong as far as flight school, I will be contracted, so will I fulfill my contract as an officer still, or will I be doing it as enlisted? I know I need to discuss these terms with my OSO, but I feel uncomfortable with it, for I have heard lots of negative things about recruiters.

Thank you for all and any help.

  • After pulling an all nighter, should you take a short nap, or stay awake?

So here I am. Sophomore year of college. Last year when I pulled all nighter's studying for final exams, I didn't think much of how sleep affects your performance. Obviously, performance is affected if you don't get your sleep, and it would be better to space your studying throughout a few days or even weeks. However, I have found it effective and proven to work for myself to stay up the whole night before and study for back-to-back hours, so everything clicks, and it is fresh in my mind. I don't do this for exams or quizzes, just finals.

Unfortunately, my 3rd semester as a college student is much more challenging than freshman year. Just one month in, and I have a 4-hour long on a Sunday night (on campus, not online). So, here I am, 5:00 in the morning, Sunday. I have successfully stayed awake, studied, learned, and understood the chapters that will be on the exam to where I am confident.

Now for the question. I have work in approximately 3 hours. After work, I will have an additional 3 hours to study, which I will do. I will review everything once again. Maybe not for the whole 3 hours, but simply as long as it takes me to review. Scientifically (or statistically) and also by opinion, is it best to just stay awake until work? Or should I take every second of the little sleep I will get to my advantage?

The reasoning behind this question is because I have read how the lack of sleep/an inconsistent sleep schedule will alter your performance, and to take "power naps" longer than 15 minutes is actually bad for you. I believe a 15 minute nap is actually the ideal thing to do, but a nap for an hour or two is definitely bad. I'm not sure. Someone please clarify for me! Thank you so much!

  • What if I do burnout and my tire blows?

I have a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle. The tire tread is ridiculously low. there are two spots on the tire where you can see the thread. I have already ordered a new tire and it will be here in two days. I never do burnouts because of the price of tires, so I want to do a burnout on my old tire the day before I put the new one on. I'm only going to do like a 30 second burnout. Enough to roll smoke. What are the chances the tire will blow? If it does, I will stop immediately. If i stop will everything be ok? Like I'm going to take the whole wheel off to take it in to change the tire anyway.

  • What is going on between the U.S. and Syria?

First off, don't tell me to watch the news and read the newspaper. Clearly I have chosen not to do that by asking on here.

Secondly, I am open to all opinions and facts. I enjoy reading about this stuff, whether you give me an answer that is a sentence or 10 paragraphs. Please start from the beginning of how this started, and try to remain somewhat brief. Thank you very much!

Anyway I am looking for the dark smoke (tinted) version of it to buy online, and am having no luck.

First person to give me a link to a website with it for sale/in stock gets best answer.

  • What laptop should I get?

I'm in college and need a cheap laptop that will simply perform quickly. I will use it for Runescape, iTunes, microsoft office, and the Internet (email, Facebook, YouTube, amazon, etc). That's it. I don't need a $2,000 MacBook Pro or anything with exceptional storage. Just a cheap new laptop that Is capable of performing those things at satisfying speeds.

  • Do you think I'll get accepted into Marine PLC air?

I'm currently applying for an aviation slot in the Marine Corps through the PLC Air program...

My review board is in a month and I am getting anxious, so I've decided to ask around for opinions and previously accepted applicants.

    ME:

    Pennsylvania State University

Just finished Freshman Year... will be a Sophomore

    Major- Mechanical Engineering

    CUMULATIVE GPA: 2.96

    ASVAB: 78

    ASTB: 5/6/5

PFT: (didnt take yet, should be around 290)

Record: NO CRIMINAL RECORD, DRUG USE, TATTOOS, ETC.. NOTHING.

Recommendations: Dean of Students, 2 college professors, 2 friends, and 3 previous job managers (2 are former marines, enlisted)... all recommendations were GREAT, none including anything checked as below average or inferior... lots of above average and superior markings.

3 family members CURRENTLY contracted with the military, I am unsure how long they plan to stay.

Brother: Enlisted, 6 years, Marine Corps, infantry

Sister: Enlisted, 2 years, Navy, Nurse

Cousin: Officer, 2 years, National Guard

I ALSO HAVE 1 YEAR OF AIR FORCE ROTC WHICH I COMPLETED MY FRESHMAN YEAR.

100 word statement: very well thought out and well written (in my opinion)

Basically I feel the overall application is above average but not the best of the best of the best...

My grades could be a little better, but they do exceed the requirement, and are average. Hopefully my Physical Fitness will make up for that.

I've read online and been told by the recruiter at the office that I will be accepted, but I'm still nervous. From what I understand most people, let alone Freshman, do not pass the

ASTB (aviation selection test battery)... I passed it on my first try. The reason this is my first board is because I was unaware of the Marine PLC aviation program. I found out late second semester, and got on it ASAP, but still missed the last board. I've decided that I'm not very interested in Air Force, and the Marine Corps is more for me.

SO, PLEASE GIVE ME ANY AND ALL INPUT AND SUGGESTIONS!

    Thank you!

  • Would I still make effective gains with this workout?

I am currently training for the Marine Corps PFT (physical fitness test)... I am finally able to complete the 20 pull ups (highest possible score). I can probably do the 100 situps in 2 minutes (highest possible score). Lastly, I can run a 20 minute 3 mile (need 18 minutes for the highest possible score). I have 1 month until my PFT.

I would like to continue with my pull up workout so I don't lose the ability to do 20 of them.

    this is the workout:

    http://manlypat.wordpress.com/2009/02/24/armstrong...

I would also like to begin doing this core/ab workout, just to make sure I can do the 100 situps:

    http://manlypat.wordpress.com/2009/07/17/pft-kille...

Lastly, I would like to run 2-3 times a week until the test as well. My runs consist of 4-5 mile runs, interval training, and hills.

I've been doing the pullup workout completely 5 days a week. My running is pretty much whenever I feel I have the time, and is only 1-2 times a week (need to step it up)... I don't do any ab workouts because I could do the 100 situps in 2 minutes when I did a mock PFT before my training.

THE QUESTION/PROBLEM I am asking/curious of is how I should schedule all 3 workouts on a 7 day basis. I am thinking the pullup workout directly followed by the situp workout 5 days in a row... I'm unsure if this will work because of gains/proteins going to muscle etc... I'm not a nutrition major or a fitness expert so I wouldn't know. Should I wait a few hours and eat something in between the pull up and situp workouts? Also should I do my running back to back on the 2 off days (say saturday and sunday)??? Or should I maybe do the pullups and situps directly after one another, then do my running a few hours later? Theres so many possibilities that I am unsure of. If I were to do my pullups and situps back to back, should I do one before the other?

Any and all help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated and taken into consideration. Thank you!

  • Would it be a bad idea to take apart my bike?

I have a 2013 Kawasaki Ninja 300 ABS. I've had it for about a month, and already have 2,000 miles on it. I really don't know a whole lot about the bike, the engine, or how the mechanics work. I just know how to fill it up with gas and change the oil. Otherwise I will take it to the shop. I'm the same way with cars. Also I'm only 19 years old, attending college, and plan to go to become a Marine officer.

I just feel itd be worthy knowledge, and I read somewhere that it's good to read the manual, take apart your vehicle, and put it back together. If it runs, you understand most of it, if not, do it over.

    Is this a bad idea?

Especially with a brand new bike, and little experience?

Also would I need special tools or just ordinary ones?

I feel like its a bad idea, but I love hands on stuff. It'd probably be something I would do over thanksgiving break when I'm bored and can't really ride it because of cold and snow.

Thank you so much for your input!

  • If I get into a fight with my father and move out, can I legally get my possessions from him?

I'm 19 years old, I go to college, I work 2 jobs, and I am in Air Force ROTC, currently applying to become a marine corps officer.

My parents are divorced. My mom and stepdad are great people and have always been there for me. My father lives alone and I live there for the most part solely because of where he lives vs where my mom lives which is relevant to my jobs and social life.

My father never paid child support and lies to me all the time. I stay with him because I love him and he will always be my father. We get into arguments occasionally, but rarely are they serious. We recently got into a serious one. If it would get serious, and I would take off with my motorcycle (title in my name, I make the payments etc)... Would I be able to legally get all of my stuff in his house back?

There's no chance he would let me move out. I own numerous possessions like an Xbox and flat screen tv, 3 snowboards, a laptop, all my clothes and more. If I would get assistance legally would I be able to get those back without official receipts or documents saying they're mine?

Especially since he wouldn't have any documents of the sort either? However they're under his roof.

It's sad and pathetic a father would do that to his son but its true.

For example, I have thousands of dollars into my jeep wrangler including interior, stereo, exterior parts and accessories... However the jeep is titled under him and him only so I know I would never see that again.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Should I get a motorcycle with ABS?

I'm 19 years old, and getting my first bike. I have driven dirtbikes, fourwheelers, etc so I have somewhat of a feel for it. I have my permit, and I'm taking the learners skills test (2 weeks, 3 days a week, 3 hours each day) to get my license starting next week.

I'm interested in the 2013 honda cbr 250, and the 2013 ninja 300.

I was really interested in getting one of the bikes with ABS, but I just got off the phone with a dealer and she said no one really wants the ABS and it's completely unnecessary.

How well do they work? Should I get a bike with ABS? Is it worth the extra money?

I just want some more opinions. Thank you.

  • What should I get for a starter bike?

First off, please don't try and convince me to get me something outside of what I want.

    I'm 19 years old, 6 foot tall, 180 lbs.

I'm into sport street bikes like ninjas, CBRs, GSXR, and yamahas YZF and R6. I own and have driven four wheelers and a lifted jeep. I have some experience with a dirt bike and obviously I can ride a bicycle. I'm saying this to show that I have some maturity and respect to machines along with experience. DON'T RANT TO ME THAT THIS MEANS NOTHING WHEN IT COMES TO A MOTORCYCLE. I UNDERSTAND THAT. I DO FEEL IT HELPS A LITTLE THOUGH.

I just got my motorcycle permit the other day, and have already registered to take the BRC (6 day learners course) to get my license in 2 weeks.

    I'm debating on a 250cc or a 600cc.

They say 250s are perfect starters, but you will grow out of them quickly.

    So 250 or 600?

Next, I'm debating on New or Used.

I've also heard plenty of times that YOU WILL MOST LIKELY wreck or lay down your bike. I get that, so I feel like I should get a used bike.

If I get a used bike, should I get it from a dealer or try to find a really good deal on Craigslist (assuming the good deal consists of a clean title and a running bike)?

Lastly, though I want a nice street bike, should I maybe get an older, multi terrain bike that's street legal? Like a dirtbike almost?

Thanks for any and all help.
