  • Was July 4, 2013 the 236th or 237 birthday of the United States of America?

On the July 4, 2013 broadcast, and rebroadcast on July 5, the PBS program "A Capitol 4th" referred to this as the 236th birthday of the United States of America. Well, I don't know about you, but - and as the program later confirmed - the United States of America was founded July 4, 1776.

The following appears to indicate that July 4, 2013 is the 237th birthday of the United States.

    1776: 1777, 1778, 1779, 1780, 1781, 1782, 1783 - 7 years

    1783: 1793, 1803, 1813 - 30 years

    1813: 1913, 2013 - 200 years

Any way I add this up, I get 237 years. Am I making a mistake? Am I crazy? Was it necessary to lose one year to comply with the PATRIOT ACT - a clear and present danger of an example of George Orwell's Doublespeak from "1984" if I do so myself - and thus we have 236 years, or is it that someone made a mistake and no one bothered to speak up, ala the little boy in "The Emperor's New Clothes" who shows everyone else to be an idiot when he admits the Emperor is Naked.

So, am I correct that July 4, 2013 is the 237th Birthday of the United States of America - or more properly, the 237th anniversary - or am I doing something wrong, and it really is the 236th?

  • Est-ce point en anglais français correct?

Greetings! I am not a native speaker of french, but of English. I have a few sentences I wrote for a book which I translated to French using an automated service, like this message. I want to know if the translation I have is correct.

Salutations! Je ne suis pas un locuteur natif de la langue française, mais de l'anglais. J'ai quelques phrases que j'ai écrit pour un livre que je traduit en français en utilisant un service automatisé, comme ce message. Je veux savoir si la traduction que j'ai, c'est correct.

The first item in Englsh is / Le premier élément de Englsh est

People of the French Language Section of the Afterlife

I have the following as the translation / J'ai le texte suivant que la traduction

Les gens de la Section de Langue Française de la vie après la mort

Second item in English / Deuxième élément en anglais

To the Supreme Court of the French Section of the Afterlife, Greetings. Per your question, "Do the statutes, laws and customs of the English Language Section of the Afterlife permit the imposition of Involuntary Recycling upon Incomings?" we respond and answer your question "No."

I have the following as the translation / J'ai le texte suivant que la traduction

Pour la Cour suprême de la Section française vie après la mort, salutations. Par votre question, «Ne les statuts, lois et coutumes de la Section de langue anglaise de l'au?delà permettre l'imposition de recyclage involontaire sur Incomings?» nous répondre et répondre à votre question «Non».

  • Is there a medical means to scan bent knees?

I have become incapacitated because tendons or other parts internal to my knees have failed. I am wheelchair bound as a result and cannot straighten my knees. Apparently, all the standard examination tools - MRI, CT Scan, etc - cannot be used on a body part that can't stay rigid/straight. Is there anything to allow an exam of the inside of a body part that is bent? (X-Rays can't examine soft tissue.)
