I am a receptionist for a surgeon, and we have a blind patient who comes in with her dog. She is elderly and walks slowly. She asked me to lead her to an empty chair in the waiting room, so I came around the desk and took her hand. I lead her over to a chair and said, as we approached it, "the chair is right in front of you, stop" when we were about one foot away. She still smashed her knees on it trying to sit down, and I wondered how else I could help her? Should I have stopped her closer to the armchair and put her hand on the chair? Or would a sofa have been preferable (more padding if she bumps it)? I have never interacted with a person who is blind before, and I am curious as to how I can better assist her. She is so sweet!
