  • Tactics in Lone Survivor 2013 film?

Currently watching 2013 film "Lone Survivor". The US soldiers had a choice of positions prior to a possible attack by the enemy. They could have gone to the top of a ridge which was above the tree line, and sought cover. This would have given them a clear field of view of any approaching enemy. They chose a lower position among trees. This neither gave them adequate cover nor permitted them to pick off the enemy at a long range. which they would have been able to do if they had positioned near the ridge top. Consequently, they were soon overrun.

Obviously I'm no military tactician but I would think the high ground with a clear field of view and better chance of success with a satellite comm set would be the way to go.

Am I right? Or maybe they were in a no win situations.

  • Military related questions - which category?

I asked a question a few days ago about a tactical situation in a war movie. So far I've had no replies. Is there a questions category that might be better suited to military type question rather than just having the question in the Movies section?

  • When is the next "Carrington Event" predicted to occur?

A "Carrington Event" is a massive solar storm that hits Earth and disrupt electro-magnetic devices. The last major one to occur was in 1859. It disrupted telegraphic communications.

If such an even were to occur today, it could have devastating effects on our way of like, at least for several years. Everthing from phones to aircraft, TV & radio, cars & computers to medical equipment etc., could become useless.

It would basically throw civilization back 150 or so years.

Have scientist been able to predict when such an event is likely to occur? Within what range of years?

    Thanks.

  • Alternative to expensive Weep Hole Screens?

I need to replace the old weep hole inserts in the brickwork. The current ones were probably installed about 30 years ago. They appear to be made of ordinary plastic insect screen mesh. I've looked at what is available (in Australia) at major hardware stores. It appears the main contender is Weepa Hole Screens. They're made of stainless steel and sound great, but it would cost me about $85. I'll get them later this year but for the next few cold months I want a temporary solution, mainly to keep out mice. I've read that wire insect screen mesh is okay and also wash scourers.

I'm surprised there aren't some made from galvanized steel, which would last indefinitely and would be much cheaper than stainless steel.

    Thanks for replies.

  • Automatically tag mp3 file or files in a chosen folder? Must be Freeware and work on Windows 8.?

There are so many mp3 taggers available it becomes confusing when trying get one that does what I want. Basically all I want to do is navigate to a folder that contains multiple mp3 files and choose one or more of those files to be tagged automatically. I've tried one called Taghycardia. It got the song names right but not the artists. Even though each file was from a different artist it placed the same artist name in the tag info of every file. No good.

    Thanks.

  • UFO documentaries on less well known incidents?

I'm looking for good investigative documentaries about less well known UFO incidents. I'm actually more interested in the quality of the investigation rather than the actual story. For example, I came across one the other day about the "Westall UFO" (on YouTube)". It's a fascinating story and many of the 200 or so people who witnessed the UFO are still actively interested as can be seen by their facebook pages.

That's the type of incident I'd like to see dealt with in documentaries, not the usual "Roswell - Area 51 stuff and abduction or crop circle stuff that is so commonly the subject.

The fact that this incident had many many observers who are still alive and contactable seems to lend it more authenticity in my view.

  • UFO flies above Thames River as shown by a city webcam?

A few years ago I saw a TV news report with video of what appeared to be an extremely fast moving object flying above the Thames River in London and ascending. I think the news presenter stated the footage was captured by a city webcam and photographic experts had examined the footage and stated they could not confirm that it was faked. I've never heard anything else about this particular footage. I've searched YouTube without success. It seems odd that information about this footage is not readily available. Maybe it was an April Fools day joke by the TV station.

  • What's the name of this film/movie?

As I recall, it opens with a group of people in the foreground and a man in the distance approaching them. I believe he is yelling out things that they consider blasphemous and he says something like "If God exists let him strike me down where I stand", whereupon a bolt of lightning hits and kills him.

I think it's a very old British film, most likely black and white and probably dating from the 50's or 60's. I have no other recollections about the film.

As well as some suggestions as to the name of the film I'd appreciate the names of some good websites where people can ask for help in discovering the names of old films.

    Many thanks and cheers.

  • Why is Yahoo!7 email service so slow at loading pages?

Gmail and other email service load immediately and switching folders is instantaneous while Yahoo!7 seems to take ages. I have wi-fi NBN and it zooms along so it's not my fault.

  • Netflix for Audiobooks?

Looking for a subscription service that is similar to Netflix, especially in pricing, but provides Audiobooks. My local library only has a VERY limited selection. Only want fiction audiobooks and ones that are still under copyright.

I've looked at Amazon's Audible.com but as I understand it for your monthly subscription you only get one book and and it you want to hear more you must pay for each audiobook. Not good value in my opinion. Thanks.

  • Is Zero-K RTS game any good?

I've stumbled across a real time strategy game (RTS) called Zero-K. (see description below). The YouTube trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUcqY4GfRpI looks fun. I enjoyed Supreme Commander and Total Annihilation, but only ever play Single Player. So has anyone here played Zero-K single player? If so, what is your opinion on the game?

Zero-K - a free, multiplatform, open-source RTS game where massive robot armies fight an endless conflict.

    Thanks.

  • Looking for Turn based strategy games with good, easy to use map editor and set in realistic world, not fantasy based world?

I'm looking for TBS war games to play on my low end Windows 8 Laptop which of course has limited processing and graphics capability.

A must have is a terrain editor and preferably a wide range of customization. I'm not interested in games that have spells and wizards etc. Nor do I want browser based games, online only games or games that must use the Steam client.

One things I hate is micro management, so massively complex games are not suitable either. Old style isometric perspective is fine as is top-down. I have found that more modern games that permit zooming around almost anywhere on a battlefield slow my PC to a crawl. And frankly, I much prefer those older styles.

C&C games and similar are great but of course they're RTS not TBS. Sometimes I just want to sit back and study the map and have a more relaxed game where I have time to plan things properly rather than indulge in what seem like a "click-fest".
