  • Jacobs School of Music (IU) or DePaul University?

    Hallo!

Okay, so I got accepted into both (flute performance). I received 24,000 in scholarships to Jacobs, which means I still have to pay 17,000. I got 30,000 in scholarships to DePaul, which means I still have to pay 15,000.

I'm planning on meeting with the professors soon, but I wanted some opinions about each school, and the pros and cons of each.

For instance, DePaul's in an awesome location, but Jacobs is a more prestigious school...

  • Professional Flutes for a good price?

    Hallo!

Okay, so I'm a senior going into flute performance as my major (either at Indiana University or U of I, haven't made my decision yet).

I started out on a Gemeinhardt, but then transferred over to a Yamaha 461 when I was in 8th grade. Now, I feel as though my skill has advanced past my Yamaha. I borrow one of my teacher's Lilian Burkart head joints to improve the sound quality, but A. it doesn't improve the sound all that much and B. I have to give it back before I start college.

Are there any professional level flutes for a good price, preferably under 3000$ or 4000$? I really like Powell flutes, but those can get really pricey sometimes.

    Thanks!

    Hello!

Okay, so I am looking to purchase a web cam for my laptop. However, I would like to spend under $25 for said cam.

Are there any brands or types of web cams that have a high video-picture quality but for a decent price?

    Thanks!

  • Oberlin Conservatory has an early REVIEW deadline?

I know the difference between early action and early decision, but what is early review? Is it that they'll review your application early? If so, does it have any impact on your admissions?

    Thank you!

  • How should I tell off my clingy ex-boyfriend?

Okay, so I broke up with my ex-boyfriend nearly a YEAR ago. On and off since then, he's become really clingy, even though I've had a new boyfriend for over ten months. After many talks with him, he laid off and let me alone.

But now he's got a facebook, and whenever he sees that I'm online, he insists on talking to me. He continues to pester me about hanging out, even texting me at random times to find out. He seems to know my schedule really well ("I knew you were at band camp so I'm talking to you now" "How did your lesson go?")

The thing is though, whenever I tell him to leave me alone, he becomes moody and even somewhat suicidal. He goes into an "Oh, nobody loves me, why don't I just kill myself?" fit and makes me feel INCREDIBLY guilty.

So...I'm looking for how to tell him to leave me alone, without him freaking out. Any suggestions?

  • I need the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso for flute and wind band by Saint-Saens?

    Hello all!

I want to play this piece for my senior solo this year. I know it's originally for a violin accompanied by an orchestra, but I've found two instances where this arrangement of flute and band exists. Here are two links to it :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZxtEnSdoPU

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcHrguRGFMk

Yet, I can't find the sheet music for it anywhere. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks!

  • Why does my teacher want me to audition for Oberlin instead?

    Hello peoples!

Alright, so I was previously discussing colleges with my flute teacher. My top two were Eastman and New England Conservatory. Yet, she seems to be recommending Oberlin more (she claims that she sees me getting in, and that I'll love it there and stuff), and calling Eastman and NEC "stretches".

I thought Oberlin was one of the top conservatories along with the other two. So..why is she recommending me for Oberlin instead? Is it not as good as the two above colleges? I'm curious. :/

    Thank you!

  • Are flute concertos good audition pieces for college?

    Hi everyone!

I'm going to be auditioning for colleges next year, majoring in flute performance. I have a ton of pieces lined up, but the majority of them are concertos, such as the Romberg, Nielsen, and Mozart in G (I like concertos :P)

And I was wondering, would concertos be a good choice for college auditions? For instance, University of Illinois-Champaign requires three contrasting pieces, and I was planning to use the above concertos as my pieces.

Should I use concertos, or do colleges prefer solo pieces (such as Image by Bozza, which I also have lined up)?

    Thank you!

  • What do I do about my boyfriend's stalking ex-girlfriend?

My boyfriend and I have been going out for almost 9 months now. When we first started going out, I got *some* crap from his ex-girlfriend, but not too much, so we forgot about it.

7 months later, the ex dumps her boyfriend (because he was "too boring" or something like that). For the past 2 months now, she's stalking my boyfriend and giving me crap.

Over the past week, she's been calling him incessently. He ignored her calls, but apparently, she didn't take the hint. She showed up at his HOUSE, and demanded to know why he wasn't answering his phone.

I was wondering how to go about this. Do you think that either:

    -My boyfriend should confront her

    -I should confront her

    -We both should confront her

    -Other actions?

Thank you! I'm so sorry this was long, but I had to explain the entire story. :)

  • What are some good music schools for flute performance majors?

    Hello people!

I am an incoming highschool senior and I am looking to major in flute performance. I'm looking into the New England Conservatory and DePaul University, because Paula Robison teaches at NEC and Matheiu Dufour teaches at DePaul (two of my idols :D) However, I'm also looking into Indiana University, University of Illinois-Champaign, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and University of Wisconsin-Madison (as a back-up, I think), but I'm not sure how good these schools are for flute performance.

I know that some music schools are more beneficial for a specific instrument than others. I was wondering if there were any other music schools that are particularly benevolent in flute training?

    Thank you! :)

  • I have some questions for the professional flautists out there?

Hello, good people of the world!

I have some questions for the professional flautist. You see, I aspire to be a professional some day, and I wanted to know what it was like for the professionals to become who they are today.

    1. How did you feel about practicing? Did you enjoy it, were okay with it, or absolutely loathed it? If you had to practice, how many hours did you practice?

    2. Was it very hard to become who you are today, or was it only somewhat difficult? Would you be willing to tell me of your experiences?

    3. Did you always want to become a professional flautist? Or were you introduced to the idea later in life?

    4. (Kind of funny) Do you think it should be "flautist" or "flutist"?

    5. Do you have any additional advice for someone who wants to become a professional?

Thank you all very much! I enjoy to hear what you good people have to say.

  • Who is the most annoying actress?

In my opinion, it's probably Megan Fox.

*Prepares for guys calling her fat and ugly because she is "jealous"*

But honestly, there's nothing really to be jealous of. Don't get me wrong, I think she's an attractive person, but that doesn't necessarily mean that she's a good actress. What I find so very annoying about her is that people think, that simply because she is attractive, she is a good actress. She is not. I found her rather annoying in Transformers, but hey, that's just me.

Although I've read interviews about her, and she seems like a pretty cool person. So I have nothing against her personality or appearance: simply about her acting.

So who do you guys think is the most annoying actress?

  • How can I help my mother?

My mother is obese (she weighs almost 250 lbs at 5'7"). She also smokes like a chimney and drinks to no end. She is also having a lot of stress in her life right now. What makes it even worse is that she has heart problems.

My mom is only 33, and it really bothers me to see her like this. How can I help her overcome these problems? (What I really want to do is try to get her to quit smoking and excessively-drinking).

It really upsets me because I had an uncle who did all these things and was even more obese, and he had four heart attacks (the fourth one killed him at 40); the fact is, she was really close to him, yet she is still doing this to herself.

    Please help me!

It's for my friend's birthday card. He's turning 17 on Thursday and LOVES speaking German, so I thought it would be a nice little thing to write on his card.

  • Who pays for what for Turnabout?

For those of you that don't know, Turnabout is basically like the Homecoming dance, except the girls ask the guys to be their dates.

The three main items that will cost money are pictures, dinner, and tickets.

My friend Dina and I are going together with our dates Jay and Sam. What do us girls have to pay for?
