Translation from the Latin?
Hi folks,
I'm looking for a translation from the latin into a non-automated English translation. While I can make general sense of the text I'd appreciate anyone who can provide a more literary translation. In the publication "The Fall of the West", Goldsworthy gives the following (p.98)
Governor: Are you a bishop? (Episcopus es?)
Bishop: I am. (Sum)
Governor: You were. (Fuisiti)
He provides a footnote and suggests the actual conversation was even ore laconic.
The footnote suggests that the conversation ended:
"Fuiisti, et issuit eos vivos ardere"
While I have some sense of the response, I'd like to know if anyone can provide a translation of the above? The author seems confident that each reader will be nod knowingly and translate but alas I cannot do so. It's a text for the general reader so I think the lack of a translation is poor.
thanks for your attention.
1 AnswerLanguages1 decade agoWhen the media use the term "File Photo" what does that mean?
When browsing some headlines on an online news-site, I noticed a small photo attached to a story of a person's hand holding the bowser pump as they put petrol into their car. The associated text said "file photo." Now I assume that covers the media legally so that no one is supposed to think that the photo was taken especially for the story? Or does it mean it's just photo that they have on file and isn't covered by copyright?
or something else?
thanks in advance.
1 AnswerMedia & Journalism1 decade agoWho and how does the French language assign sexes to a country?
I guess my question more broadly might be about any of the relevant nouns in the French language but, since I was learning some of the countries - and new ones pop up every so often - I wondered on what basis is a country determined to be masculine/feminine. Is there some official group who determines this?
