When operating normally, the current drawn by a simple resistive electrical

circuit at a given voltage can b e completely understood using only Ohms Law.

If an electrical device is submerged in water, the effect is to add a low resistance

path for current in parallel with the device at its supply terminals.

Suppose you have a 200 W stereo system in a basement. The stereo is

plugged into the 120 V socket in the wall. While you are away, a pipe breaks,

filling the basement with water. The water acts like a 0.7 ohm resistor across

the power line into the stereo.

1. Draw the complete circuit diagrams for the unflooded and flooded cases.

2. Calculate the current drawn by the stereo in normal operation (unflooded).

3. Calculate the resistance of the stereo, treating it as a simple resistive

circuit.

4. Calculate the total current and power supplied by the AC line when the

basement floods, neglecting wire resistance and circuit breakers.
