Is there really a hypothesis that Irish Gaelic came from southern France?
It seems that some people think that Gaelic may have originated as a Celtiberian dialect from southwest France. I'm not sure if anyone actually thinks this (it may be my imagination), but if this is in fact a thing, shouldn't there be a significant number of Basque loanwords in Irish (like, say, *sceart for "left")?

There just aren't that many Canadian cookbooks down here in Canada's Pants. I've heard of the Purity Cookbook and managed to get a copy of an old Anglo-Québécois cookbook printed for me, but what are some good books that I can get easily on this side of the border, particularly on French-Canadian and BC food?

Scenario: our first proof of life on other planets turns out to be a nova-like event with huge amounts of uranium and plutonium in the spectrograms. The assumption is that we observed an alien civilization in the process of incinerating itself. Would the above term be considered horribly tasteless as a description?

I have a public access cooking show on which I occasionally use metric measurements. My feeling on the matter is that it's not even worth the trouble to convert -- just use the metric readings on the scale and measuring cups, and then look up the cooking temperature on a chart.
Put a little differently: if you found an appealing recipe on the net or in a foreign cookbook, would it influence your decision whether to make it if the measurements were metric?
