In the early 60's while on active duty with the US Army in Eritrea I shot several thousand feet of regular 8mm movie film. I plan to have that footage 100% professionally converted to DVD whereupon I intend to load it into my computer and edit same with the finished product available for share on DVD (burned by me) with several people who were likewise stationed at the same military post. I am currently searching for a good easy to use program that will do this basic task without putting an undue strain on my wallet - I'm retired.

I am currently using a dialup modem and will soon switch to HS but am in a quandry as to which system is best, cable modem or DSL. I like DSL but am worried I will not receive maximum performance available in selected package due to current poor performance in dialup modem. Current performance using a USR 56K bps modem is only 26.4K bps (constant). If I switch to DSL with a promise of 3.0mbps, considering the current poor performance (I suspect due to geographical location), will I in turn receive less than advertised rate or is the technology different enough to render my argument as without merit?
