Varied careers in my younger days: teacher and conservation law enforcement officer. Trained some police dogs and bird dogs. Had horses for 40 years. Retired now with a herd of 14. And a good man who also has an equine passion.

  • Hallmark Channel Movie?

I have forgotten the title of a Hallmark Channel movie I saw within the past three years about a returning WWII soldier who roams the southern rivers fishing, specifically for catfish. He befriends a young mute boy in one town who drowns in the film. Can anyone give a title to the movie? I even checked this year's listing on the Hallmark movies with no success. I had it recorded on DVR until the machine went demonic and erased everything one day.

  • Blanketing help for an older angular horse?

We have an aged arab stallion whose withers is becoming more pronounced while his topline is sagging. He is on the smallish side anyway and always took the smallest horse blanket size. He needs to be blanketed in the winter because he does not develop adequate winter coat and due to his age.

We bought him a new blanket last year and it wore a sore on his withers. It also started rubs in other friction points. I tried lining it with additional soft jersey fabric in the wither point. It still rubbed on him. I thought maybe a slinky underneath would reduce the friction. I have also looked at blankets designed to fit higher on the neck and wonder if these would not rest on his wither point so heavily. I wonder if anyone has suggestions on a specific type of blanket that would fit an older horse like this or one with high withers and not rub or anything you have discovered to reduce the friction points when a horse wears a blanket 24/7.

  • Help with an Acer Netbook that shrinks yahoo mail?

I bought an Acer Netbook for my 80 year old mother who follows directions well. But she is in another state and I cannot figure out how to help her with this. The Yahoo Mail site on her netbook is so small that she needs a magnifying glass to see it. The rest of the programs and icons are normal font. Following any help instructions only changes the font on outgoing messages. We cannot find a way to enlarge the Yahoo Mail page so it is readable. Nothing on their help pages addresses this. Can anyone give us step by step guidance as to how to adjust this? Acer's tech support was beyond useless. Thanks to anyone who uses this netbook and knows how to change stuff!

  • DVD Recorder/VCR Combo?

I want to play my old VHS tapes and record from a TV.

So It is my understanding that the above units both play from a DVD and VHS, record the tapes to a DVD, etc. But do they also record directly from the TV to a DVD or do you use VHS format and then transfer them? I have never done this and have a very usable camera that records in mini vhs format with cables that go directly to the tv. So I wanted to know if a unit like the above could then record on dvd what I am playing on the tv. I am a senior and although I can follow directions, I would consider myself pretty uncertain with electronics without a cheat sheet.

  • Good free Greeting Card Site?

I had located some nice internet sites with quality scenery or floral designs for birthday and other cards to print half fold cards. One now only has cartoon type images to download and I spent 2 hours looking for another free downloadable site with nice images to make my own cards with no luck. The HP site has changed too much and I can no longer find the site with really nice scenery such as lakes, sunsets, old barns, etc. Since there is no craft site on yahoo, I thought maybe someone here is artsy enough to make cards and could help.

  • For older teen to early twenties horse lovers...?

We have a couple of nice rescued horses that have not yet found homes and we don't have time to really use them since we have several of our own to start under saddle. We live in a small city with a college. I have been thinking of advertising for a responsible older teen that wants to ride and work with them, no fee involved. We have great places to ride the countryside, woods, and through streams. In exchange, I would ask that maybe once a month that person does an evening feeding for us so that when we go somewhere, we don't always have to be back by dusk.

We are a registered farm, business, with adequate insurance for part-time help. We also do regular contracts for anyone else or horse on the farm.

Tell me what you see as the problems with this. As an older teen, would you be interested in such a proposal? I don't expect someone to show up 6 times a week. Even once a week would get some miles on these guys that we can't get to plus give someone the chance to ride. This is just something I would have died to do as a horseless-youth, but I may not be seeing the other side.

    So give me your take.

  • Can you watch for cheap Hobby Horse clothes for sale?

Hobby Horse in CA was broken into this week and had $250,000 worth of chaps, show clothes, limited edition clothes, etc. stolen. Company computers and other electronics weren't touched. If you come across someone selling cheap Hobby Horse clothes or any unusual vendor with these things at a show or event, call the local PD and have them checked out. It would be incredible if this crime could be solved by someone reading about the theft on YA.

  • Painting exterior cured poured foundation walls?

I do not need to stop moisture, just improve the exterior appearance.

What is the best paint/sealer/primer for this that lasts well?

On another house, I used a thick stucco-like paint with fibers, put on with a brush or trowel that lasted forever. The company no longer has a number. Does anyone know of a current product like this?

  • Encasing posts in concrete?

Does encasing an in ground post (pouring a concrete pad and coming up above ground level with the concrete around the post like a deck tube) stop rot or not make a difference? We salvaged 16' poplar posts from an old barn to use in a new horse shelter. I coated some with black asphalt paint and some with copper brown (depending if they were inside or outside) and wanted to use them in ground and was told they would rot, even with concrete around them. Opinions?

  • Want a nice horse at a great price? Please check out BLM mustangs.?

Has anyone else adopted one and have great input to share with those that don't know about their adaptability and loyalty and strong bones and health?

I have adopted 2 right off the Nevada range. There are thousands sitting in facilities waiting to be adopted because they were removed from the free roaming range due to overpopulation or encroaching on ranchlands. There is a holding facility in Ewing, IL, and another satellite center in TN for those living east of the Mississippi.

There are centers in several of the western states.

The Mustang Heritage Foundation is promoting them with BIG competitions from Wisconsin to Fort Worth to Reno. Lots of prize money. There is even a contest for starting yearlings in hand and getting them ready to adopt at auction.

Prison inmates have started these horses and they will be adopted next month:

  • Baby won't sleep in crib? Just a few minutes ago someone posted a similar question but mine is different.

My grandson is 8 months and has been nursed and slept with his mom except for a few naps in his crib. My mom and I both suggested to my daughter that she is in for a lot of crying when she separates him to the crib to sleep and to hang in there. I told her to go in occasionally and stroke him to reassure him if he screamed, but don't give in and pick him up. So today she tried to put him down and he screamed for almost 4 hours and got himself overheated. Any suggestions from mom's that breastfed babies in their bed and had difficulty making the transition to a crib?

  • Ok, before all the old timers blow a vessel, how about a different question?

What do you think about blaming the IRS for the unwanted horses? Around here, everybody breeds junk to junk because if you breed, you can declare all expenses and losses as production on your taxes. Nobody likes the IRS anyway, so I think they might be the perfect scapegoat.

  • What are some requirements for showing a German Shorthair in AKC conformation classes?

Whiskers trimmed or natural? Ears cleaned or hair allowed? Any other grooming tips for the show ring? What is the proper stance for a bird dog like this? We've checked the AKC rules and no specifics are given. This is our first try at this and we could use any guidance; we've checked the internet and can't find answers to help us prep for the ring. Thanks.

  • Has anyone else had problems with Fosamax (bisphosphonate)? What about Boniva (Ibandronate sodium)?

I'm pushing 60 and started Fosamax about 3 years ago according to directions. It destroyed my lower esophagus so much that I couldn't even drink small amounts of water before going for a walk without the water coming back up. I'd never had any problems prior to the drug and then spoke to an old friend who said the identical thing happened to her. She even got scoped to make sure no cancer was developing.

So, I'd like to know if anyone has had problems with Boniva along these lines? Any side effects? The warnings on the sheet certainly don't tell you what the odds of developing symptoms are and when you do, it is too late.

Has anyone started with Fosamax, then switched to Boniva?

Any input would help me decide if I want to risk Boniva or just take calcium and D and magnesium.

    Appreciate it.

  • Q6: I've asked my "trainer" to demonstrate and teach me this groundwork and he/she doesn't know it.

  • Q5: If you don't know what the other 4 questions were even talking about, do you know that it is nearly?

impossible to fix problems with your horse?

So pick a trainer or favorite reknowned clinician, get the tapes, dvds, or go to whorkshops and learn.

It doesn't really matter what style or personality the clinician has, you just pick one you can grasp or you prefer, and just learn it.

Otherwise you always get stuck on problems with your horse.

So who do you think you will seek out for help learning ground training and feel?

  • Q4: In Horse Ground School 104, what is lateral flexion, how do you get it, and why do you need it?

Please, adults that know this, don't answer.

Some of us old folks learned to read by rote memory. Most nowadays read by phonics. But we all learned the letters of the alphabet and sounds and words before anyone asked us to do an essay on MOBY DICK!

Too many of the younger riders get on a horse and expect performance before they know how to read, listen or communicate with the horse.

  • Q3: In Horse Ground School 103, what would be the purpose of wrapping a long line or lead from the halter?

around the hip, back to the side or front and asking a horse to turn around that way?

How much pressure do you need to get this done?

What do you do if your horse gets stuck and doesn't figure this out?

Please, adults that know this, don't answer.

Later I'm going to refer to these posts every time someone asks a question that would take these skills to solve.
