  • My rent increases due to "Fair Market Value" by about $50 each year. Anyone know why?

I could understand if any improvements had been made, or if the property value in the area was increasing in general. Neither of these are the case though. We live outside of Detroit, the economy is horrible and the unemployment rate is the highest in the country at 8.6%. I just have a hard time believing that my apartment is worth $50 more per month. Does anyone know of a way that I can get confirmation of the actual Fair Market Value of my rental?

    Thanks :)

  • Does HIPAA really prevent lab results from being given via telephone?

My doctor tested me for West Nile Virus recently. I had to wait 5 business days for the results, and I ended up being out of town when the results became available. I called the office to find out the results and was told that I could not obtain them via telephone. I no longer have symptoms (I've fully researched the virus, so I don't need any comments or answers about WNV itself) and my doctor knows that, so it seems ridiculous that they would require me to come in and pay my copay just to get a "yes" or "no" answer. They just say "HIPAA won't allow us to give it over the phone". I want to know if this is true (that HIPAA prevents them from giving lab results via telephone) and where I can see specific documentation (either U.S. or Michigan HIPAA law) either supporting or disproving it. Does anyone know where I can go to find a solid answer on this? Thanks :)

  • Please help me to translate "not all who wander are lost" into latin.?

As quoted by J.R.R. Tolkien. I have NO knowledge of Latin, but perhaps it would be simpler to use "not all wanderers are lost"? The line is so poetic that I'm sure it is difficult to translate into ANY language. I'm incorporating it into a tattoo though, so I REALLY want it to be accurate. I read the quote without knowing who said it, and now that I know I don't want people to associate it with him or LOTR because that's not what it's about for me. A friend suggested the Latin idea.

  • How do you decide if a car is worth fixing?

I have a '98 Saturn SL2 with 144,000 miles on it (had 37k when I bought it). My transmission began jerking violently and I took it to the Saturn dealership that I've always taken it to. The next day they tell me that the transmission is shot, that it will cost $1800 to replace it with one that has 57k miles on it.

My husband and I are struggling financially, so my dad gave me the $1800 to fix it OR to put down on another car. It seems crazy to put $1800 into such an old car (it's BARELY in "fair" condition, so it's not going to be worth $1800 if we trade it in later, even with newer transmission). However the engine has fewer miles on it (around 90,000) because it was replaced with a newer one a few years back.

We really can't afford more than about $100/month in a car pmt, so do you think that it's better to fix what we have and know than to go into debt on a car that may have different problems?
