I'm a retired English professor with an undergraduate major in Latin/Classics who can answer most questions about grammar and composition. ancient and medieval world literature, and Shakespeare. I'm also interested in genealogy, names, etiquette, and some history, mainly ancient, medieval, and the American Civil War.

  • Do people who have a very high percentage of best answers ever do either if these things?

Do they (you) delete your answer if you see that someone else's is better and more likely to be chosen best? Do you look over the answers that have already been posted and post one yourself only if you're sure yours will be better than any of those already posted? In short, do you resist the temptation to answer questions for which you're unlikely to get best answer?

  • Organizing favorite websites?

When I started bookmarking favorite websites, I was able to organize them by category--language, religion, health, etc.--and add new favorites to existing categories. Just recently, however, when I click the "Add to favorites" button, nothing seems to happen, but it turns out that those sites are being added to the "Favorites Bar" at the end of the list. How can I move them to the categories I want to list them under?

  • Is it safe to drill into a window sash?

Is it safe to attach shelf brackets to a window sash (i. e. the wooden frame that holds the pane), or is drilling the screw holes liable to crack the glass? The holes would be near the outer edge of the sash, an inch or two from the edge of the glass Attaching the brackets to the outer frame won't work very well, and the wall beneath isn't available. Please advise!

  • Donating a car to charity?

What charities in the Baltimore area accept used (VERY used!) cars as donations? I would like to give mine directly to a charity (and choose the one) rather than giving it to some fundraising middleman agency.

  • Where can I buy wildflower plants or seeds? Or any plant with green flowers?

I'm especially interested in bluets: English daisies (bellis perennis)--not the cultivated ones that I've seen in some catalogs and garden centers, but the little wild ones that grow in the grass in England and France; and white and yellow violets--not the violas that one mail order garden center sold me as violets.

As for green flowers, I have some but am interested in any except (at present) hydrangeas, which grow too big for my garden. I don't have much luck with getting "viridifloral" plants to come back after the first year.

  • What to do with tulip bulbs that didn't get planted last fall?

I recently found a bag of tulip bulbs that I bought last fall and then mislaid. What's the best thing to do with them now? Plant them outside anyway? (I live in central Maryland.) Plant them in pots indoors? Wait until fall? Any other options?

  • Joshua Wood 1785-1865?

Any help on his parents, etc.? Born in VA, married Jane Stephenson in Pendleton County 1810, moved to Lewis (now Barbour) 1830s. Father's name said to be James. Father of James (b c1815), Hester (b. c1816), Cynthia, Joshua Jr. (b c1825). no death record or will in Lewis, Barbour, or Upshur County (now in WV). Jane died a day before or after he did, so any Joshua Wood who married anyone else is another Joshua. Any leads? (Ted Pack, can you help?)

  • What do you do when mail addressed to someone else is delivered to your home?

Maybe the postman misread the address, or maybe the address is yours but the person no longer lives there, or never did. What do you do?

  • Where can I find a "bookworm" book-holder?

Several years ago, I bought several "bookworms"-- metal book-holders shaped like an L with an elongated horizontal stroke that coils back on itself. It serves the same purpose as a pair of bookends, but because it's all one piece,it holds books much more securely--it can't slide apart. Now I can't find them. An online search just turns up cute sculptures and other things that aren't it. Can anyone help?

  • What recourse do I have when someone plagiarized an answer of mine and posted it as his own?

About a week ago, I took some pains to write an answer to a question about a Shakespearean tragedy, posted it, and then reconsidered and deleted it because I thought it might enable someone to plagiarize and turn it in for a class assignment as his own work. What happened instead is that another answerer, most of whose answers are on computer-related subjects, somehow retrieved it and posted it as his own, with only the opening words "Funny as it may seem" substituted for my "Ironically"--otherwise it was my answer word for word. Then at the end he actually asked for his answer to be chosen best. I reported it and thought that the matter had been resolved, but this evening I found that "his" answer had been chosen best, with mine posted right under it, so that one might think I had copied from him instead of vice versa. As I said, most of this person's answers are on computer-related subjects, while many others of mine are on subjects similar to that of this particular answer.
