  • How do some equipment mounted semi trucks move with nobody in the driver's cab?

I have always wondered because as I type this a massive highway project has been going on behind my house and there is a crew putting in posts for metal guard rails for the curves and it goes pretty fast but they just drive it in and and move the truck forward and repeat and they don't need a guy in the cab to move the truck! and when this project first started they had a truck spreading mulch and it was the same thing but the operator of that was standing behind his truck, driving it forward, controlling his belt, and shooting mulch 100' away! all with a wireless remote too. I was just curios on how they make it work. the only thing I can think is that the trucks have to be autos and it is part of the truck and not the equipment but I don't know,it sounds like the RPMs for this guard rail hammer drops a bit every time they move it since it has it's own engine so I could be wrong.

  • What would a vintage WW2 truck need to pass a CHP inspection in CA?

I have a 1943 GMC CCKW with a flat bed that I would like to get inspected by the California CHP and get street legal but my dad thinks because of the more commercial nature of the truck that they will be more strict vs a regular car as I had a 26 Model T inspected and they passed it in a mere 5 minutes! My dad thinks they will check things like the brakes, the front end and weight ratings since the truck is rated for 16,000 pounds and 15 and up require those bright and ugly weight stickers on the sides but the major things that my dad {and I a little] has not let it go to the CHP is it has no seat belts,I dont think it is a big deal since my T has none but I want to use it for work so the insurance might think otherwise, The speedometer doesn't work ever since I got it last year but as of now[11/23/12]I am trying to get one on ebay so that might change and the last one which is the big one and the main reason is that the truck has a really bad shimmy problem. I can't tell how fast it is but maybe 40mph and since the steering is manual it really scares the hell out of me! but my dad think the CHP will automatically fail the truck because of that and I think if that was fixed I could do 55mph but its that last one thats holding me back I just wonder is my dad right on the brakes, front end,and that shimmy thing being checked? and seat belts speedometer and weight stickers? Should I deal with those first or is my truck passable at the CHP?

  • Who might I ask or where should I look for a LLV? [Long life vehicle]?

For those who may not know

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_LLV

I have seen pictures of these online of regular people somehow getting these and using them in their business to deliver things and I'm even on a forum devoted to old tractors and one member has an LLV to deliver dogs back to their owners in his doggie daycare businesses which is a great idea! [He didn't tell me how he got his]

Now my idea here was that my dad has a construction biz and I wanted to have a small fuel efficient and maneuverable truck to deliver everything from equipment and hardware to fuel and parts for our backhoe and I love the LLV since it's so different from a pickup truck and the side provides lots of ad space. I even asked my post office and they didn't have a clue on where to go about getting one nor did my postal carrier though she admires my efforts. oh! and one last thing! the one thing I don't like about the LLV is that it is a 2 wheel drive but I know it was based off the Chevy S10 so how hard would it be to swap the 4x2 crap for 4x4? or drop the body on to a 4x4 S10 Chassis then swap it to right hand drive? [which would be easier?]

  • Does harbor freight tool sell a lift gate anymore?

Harbor freight tools used to sell a lift gate that slides into a 2'' receiver tube and used a winch to lift and lower 500lbs of whatever. At the time my dad would always say it would not work with my truck and would not let me get it and now a few years later I have a 1943 GMC CCKW and the bed on that is about 4' off the ground and most of the things I'm going to haul will be heavy and I'll be alone. I have noticed that Northern industrial tools has the very same lift but it is $500! The price at HFT was less than half that and it seems handy for me being able to plug it in to your trailer outlet, relocate it to the sides when needed.[I was going to put hitches and power plugs and the back and front sides] and transfer it to different vehicles too.

  • How hard would it be to put a trailer brake controller on a 1943 GMC CCKW?

For one hell of a Cristmas gift my dad got me a 1943 GMC CCKW and one of the things I want to do with it is to tow for my dad's construction biz and I need a brake controller since all his trailers have electric brakes. I was looking at this one http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/prodigy-... since my dad has it in his truck and our family rv and it works great but in both those situations it was simply plug and go and obviously a 70 year old truck would not have any of that.Im wondering if it could be done or if I I should take it to a trailer place and see what they say.

  • Will Chevy have a new diesel Suburban at all?

Basically my parents are in the market for a new Suburban and to my dismay is that they do not have a diesel for it like they used to as my dad has a 07 Silverado with the 6.6 Duramax diesel and Alison Transmission and even with 10,000 pounds it still will out accelerate our current Suburban. I thought that the trucks and Burbs were the same thing pretty underneath and I think its bs. I would love it if they would make a 3500 Suburban too but they have never done that and I doubt they ever will. I thought I read that GM was going to make a V6 Duramax for the Burbs but when the went bankrupt they abandoned that plan.

  • what is the proper way to keep a stick shift at a stop?

I feel more comfortable keeping it in gear and holding the clutch but I have heard that that is hard on the clutch and your supposed to keep it in Neutral and keep off the clutch and shift into gear when you need to move. So what is the better way to keep the clutch?

  • Can I use a big rig air compressor on a jeep?

I have a 1971 postal jeep that I want to put an air compressor on for horns and tire and pool toy inflation but all of the electric ones have a rather small duty cycle and that won't do for me at all so now I'm considering on using a big rig compressor on the spot where the smog pump used to be. My question is not on mounting or brackets since I can figure that out no problem it's mainly about power. ie can the motor of the car make the compressor work or is it too big to work? Oh yes my jeep has the 232 inline 6 if that helps with anything.

  • How do I tell the year and month of my AMC 232?

Basically I have a 1972 postal jeep with the 232 that I'm trying to fix up and I took the intake and exhaust manifold to a friend that is a jeep expert and he thinks the motor is a 75 or newer because it has all kinds of emissions crap on the manifolds. The serial number on my motor is 210E23 and I can't figure out what that 210 is. The E means that its a 232 1bbl 70-79 and the 23rd means that it was made on the 23rd but I don't have month for it and I have no idea what the 210 equates to. So I I am wondering what year and month was my motor manufactured? The reason for all this is that when I bought the car it came without a carb and that is the last major part that I need to fix up the motor and nobody including my jeep expert can seem to find the right kind and a few places online its the same thing.

  • would this carb work with a 1971 amc 232 inline 6?

Here is the carb in question.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/?cmd=ViewItem&_trks...

I have a 1971 D-j5 jeep [postal jeep] with the 232 inline 6 and that came without a carb and I can't find a carb locally and I found this one but the seller says that it is for only a 1972 and I want to ask other more knowledgeable people on jeeps since the seller doesn't seem too sure.

  • Can Jeep Cj parts interchange with Jeep Dj parts? [or the other way around.]?

I have recently taken delivery of a 1971 Jeep DJ-5 and of course it is missing a few parts and it seems that I can't find DJ-parts anywhere but I can find the CJ-5 parts pretty much any and every where and I want to be sure that I can mix and match before I go spending my money.

  • I need some ideas of things to weld for a demo during my county fair?

Basically my local county fair for this year has asked me to do a live welding demonstration during said fair. For this year it will be from September 13-18 and I was originally going to make a cart but when I found out the date I figured that won't work since I can make a cart in 2-4 hours in one day and I don't want to make one each day despite the fact that I will raffle them off too. The only other thing I can think of would be small artsy stuff but I have never welded for art and I don't think I can do it or a MIG welder could work and I have no idea on what else I can do that would last the 6 days of this fair so please help me think of something as I have to start getting now for it.

  • Does anybody know anything about this fan?

    http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2006/02/13/fan-in-p...

Even though it is more than 50 years old the entire design sounds really handy, for example, while working under a car I could put this on a clamp lamp and have air. So what I'm wondering is

    1 who made this fan?

2 can you still get one?

3 if anyone has one would they be willing to sell it to me?

and yes I'm a member of that site and all the people who had one sold them all so asking on there wont help.

  • I can't get online while playing Little Big Planet 2 due to "chat restrictions" ?

Ok. I don't remember what settings I put when I first set up my PSN account, which I got when I got the first LBP and at that time I could go online no problems but now when I try to do the same with the second game it will say Online play has been disabled due to chat restrictions as soon as I drop into the pod. Now I looked at all of my settings and I have all parental controls and all restrictions off since I don't need them and I asked my supposedly tech savvy brother what could be going on and he couldn't figure it out either. So I'm wondering if somebody could help me figure this thing out?

  • I need a glue that can stick neoprene to pvc Vinyl. Do you have any suggestions?

Long story short, I have seen two people on youtube turn the 10' inflatable T-Rex made by Jet Creations into an airtight costume using a drysuit zipper. Here is an image of the t-rex http://www.flickr.com/photos/37552466@N04/44638893... Anyways when I asked the people on how they did it they ignored my completely and I can tell how its going to be if I go that route.[Bad!] I need to find a glue that will stick the neoprene drysuit zipper to the PVC vinyl.I would need it to be flexible and black or clear in color but I would be willing for any kind of color.I would prefer something that is easy to get but I'm willing to put in some more effort finding it if need be.

  • What would this little car be registered/insured as in California?

http://www.prismz.com/automite/ I have been looking at these plans to build this car for a while but I'm not sure of registration/insurance. I'm assuming it has three wheels so it can be classified as a motorcycle but I'm not sure and I don't want to waste $40 on the plans or deal with the dmv yet.

  • When you get a class C driver's license in California does it give you the motorcycle license too?

I thought I read that when you get a class C license in California is that you automatically get the motorcycle one too but my older brother says that you have to go back and get a separate license for motorcycles. I just want to know which one is true.

  • Can someone please explain these side effects I'm having from using Carbatrol?

For some reason I have been having seizures and I was taking a medicine called Phenytoin but it was not perfect and I switched to another one called Carbatrol. My question is for the Carbatrol and has nothing to do with the other one. I'm taking a 200mg pill in the morning after waking up and another at about 9 pm. Now the side effect I'm having is that a lot of electronic sounds are lower in pitch than what they really are. I first noticed this the very next day after taking the medicine when I went to listen to my i pod. At first I thought it was my headphones since they also are a head set for my cell phone but then my dad's truck door chime and ignition were lower too as was the music from his radio. The part that really is confusing is that talking is normal to me and is the correct pitch and singing is as well although the music that they sing to is lower. I was messing around with some music and I figured out that I have to increase the pitch by 4.176% for it to sound normal to me while it sounds high pitched to everyone I play it to. My doctor has no clue what's going on and he wont switch me to something else because he considers it a rather mild side effect. So to recap, 1 Every electronic sound but talking and singing are at a lower pitch to me than what they really are. 2 I have to increase music by 4.176% for it to sound normal to me while its high pitched to everyone else and, 3 My doctor has no idea what the heck is going on and he considers it a mild side effect so he won't switch me to something eles
