Transmission low on fluid, grinding and whining, any damage?
I decided to do transmission fluid change and filter change yesterday. I installed new parts and let gasket maker set overnight. (Hyundai uses a silicone gasket) In the morning i put fluid in and went to work, 7 or 8 miles one way. and all seemed good. Coming home from work transmission slipped and shifted rough whole way home, especially in lower gears. Got home fluid was 2 to 3 quarts overfull. I let the fluid out of pan to near empty, fluid seemed just below a good level so i added maybe a pint of fluid. However after i added a pint or so i drove about 6-8 miles total, car slipped first mile (uphill), i just thought maybe excess fluid was hanging out somewhere, after the first mile or so, everything was smooth. Came home, put it into reverse to back into driveway and heard a grinding or whining sound (constant). Quickly got car off road, put into drive, same problem, killed motor. Removed dipstick and a little white smoke came out, fluid didnt even register.Turned out to be 2-3 quarts low. Got fluid where it should be. Drove about 40 to 60 miles, everything seemed great. However i do believe fluid is burnt. I do believe i did more bad than good trying to maintain the vehicle, but could there be an catastrophic damage? I know my stupidity got in the way, this should have all been prevented. My plan here is to run to auto store tomorrow and change the fluid in the pan, with new fluid. All reccomendations, input, and info is greatly appreciated! Automatic Trans Holds 7 quarts
