What can I put in a sale contract (legally)?
Are there any laws, or whatever, limiting what I can include in a sale contract?
I'm helping the farm I board with re-home several of there horses (horses are free). For one of the horses, I am having them sign him over to me so I can sign him over to his new family. He has a knee injury that needs to be checked by a vet throughout the rehab (they've already agreed to this).
So basically, here is what I want in the contract (in addition to a general sale contract):
-They must work with a vet throughout the horses rehab
-Seller gets first buy back rights at market value, if horse is ever put up for sale
-Seller can do a check on the horse with 24hrs notice at seller's discretion
Would that all be okay and legal? Keep in mind.. it's not an adoption- it's a "sale".
Is there anything else I should put in there for the safety of the horse?
4 AnswersHorses1 decade agoSwollen knee for 3 months, possible injuries? If in my shoes, would you take this horse?
I have an opportunity to take a horse for free, that I had on trial several months ago. I board my horses at the farm that owns him, and I am finding a new home for the horse. I've had a lot of interest in him, but obviously being free.. I'm getting a lot of the wrong people interested in him (although, I do have references and a home check required). I've always had a special place in my heart for this horse, and would enjoy owning him. I'm okay with having him as a pasture pet if he ends up not being sound to ride, or putting him down if that is the best option. I just don't want to get in over my head with vet bills.
The short of it is, a young man bought the horse after I decided not to, horse got injured in pasture - swollen and limping no "wound", boy didn't do anything for it, boy surrenders the horse 2 months after injury. The farm that now has ownership hasn't done anything for it, either and it's been another month. The knee is considerably less swollen, no limping but he is slightly off. The knee doesn't feel hot, and doesn't seem to bother him when you touch it or put pressure on it. He has free range of motion of the knee.
What I am looking for is opinions on what could it be. The farm who owns him now thinks bone chip. Obviously if I do end up taking the horse the first thing I will do is have the vet out to x-ray it. I'll include pictures and a couple of videos of him free lunging. The pictures and videos were taken today.

7 AnswersHorses1 decade agoSwitching brands of MSM, should I do the loading dose again?
I've had my horse on MSM for several months now. I bought a different brand, but it's the same purity (99.8%). Should I put him on the loading dose again? He has recently missed a day here or there of the MSM due to the place I board at.
Would there be any disadvantages to putting him on the loading dose (again)? It's only 1 extra scoop for 7 days..
4 AnswersHorses1 decade agoMixing supplements with applesauce vs. grain? And another question..?
I heard that instead of adding supplements to grain, you can put them in applesauce? The boarding facility that I currently have my horses at is having an issue giving my horses their supplements. Anyways, I need to make sure that they are getting what they need so I'm looking for alternate options.
Also, does it really matter if they get the supplements at the exact same time everyday if I do end up using the applesauce method?
Annnddd, which of these supplements would you choose for a horse with seasonal allergies?
(Is there any difference between the first two?)

2 AnswersHorses1 decade agoA few questions about this horse's pedigree?
What does the "~" in front of the sire's birth year mean? How does the sire and the grandsire have the same birth year? Why doesn't the dam have a birth year listed on the pedigree?
Thanks =)
2 AnswersHorses1 decade agoExercises and/or tips for conditioning a horse?
I'm wanting to get my AQHA gelding into shape. Not for anything in particular. I know that "conditioned" for different events mean different things, but I just want him to be all-around conditioned.. if that makes sense?
I have access to indoor and outdoor arenas, a round pen, and trails with nice hills. I also have access to ground poles (and standards), barrels, and poles.
I've never conditioned a horse before, and I do have professional help available if I need it.. but I'd like to do it myself (with your help! lol). I just want some ideas, exercises, tips, or whatever.
Thanks in advance!
BTW- Here are his "before" pictures. I'll be taking new pictures every two weeks for two or so months.

3 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHow do his hooves look? Angles, overall health? Barefoot trimming?
I think it's time that I get more involved with my horses hoof care. I've always had barefoot horses, and have no interest in changing that. But, I have noticed that both of my horses are tender-footed on gravel. My BO said that he needs shoes, but I disagree. I'd really like to find a farrier that does exclusively barefoot trims.
Anyways, I took pictures of one of my horses hooves, hoping I could get some insight on his overall hoof health, angles, etc. So I can determine whether or not my farrier is doing a good job.
Some of the pictures didn't turn out, so I'll just add what I have.

3 AnswersHorses1 decade agoGelding with coughing problem..?
My gelding has been coughing quite often lately. He will cough when he's eating hay and grain, and when I'm riding and lunging him. I've seen him while he was eating grain, cough and some grain came out.
I'm waiting on the vet to call me back and schedule a time for him to come out. But, in the meantime.. what are some of the things it could be caused by? I was thinking heaves.. but right now he's on pasture board, and I'm pretty sure he has been most of his life. He's getting great quality grass hay with a small amount of alfalfa. He's also getting 1 1/2 scoops 2x daily of 14% Buckeye Performance Feed.
Also, I've owned him for a month and a half or so.. and a trainer at my barn owned him for about 3-4 months before that. He wasn't coughing until about a month ago.

Does white-out actually work? Is it noticeable?
4 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)1 decade agoA question about transferring AQHA a papers?
I bought a mare a few months ago, and at the time of the sale I wrote my name on the "buyer" line of the transfer papers. I never ended up putting her papers in my name. I am now selling her and am worried that there will be an issue getting her into their name because I already wrote my name there.
So, what do I do? Can I simply just request a new copy of the papers?
Thanks for any help.
1 AnswerHorses1 decade agoWhat should I name this gelding? Pics! Helllllp!---?
I'm trying to decide on a new name for my new gelding. Right now his name is The Rock, but I'd really like to change it.
His registered name is Colonel Docbar Rocky.
He is a 15.2 (almost 15.3), black (bay/brown right now-sun bleached), 5 year old, AQHA gelding. He can be stubborn, lazy, affectionate, and hard working allll rolled into one. Lol
I don't care if his "barn name" has to do with his registered name.

And yes, I know he needs to gain weight and muscle. He was sort of a rescue, and in bad shape, when the friend I bought him from got him.
I really dislike super generic names, so try to be kinda original.
Thanks! =)
9 AnswersHorses1 decade agoCan anyone refer me to books or online articles for...?
..basic English riding? Like seat position, leg position, etc.
I've started taking English lessons and would like to study up more on the proper position.
PS- Online articles will be more helpful as I don't go to the library/book store often..
Thanks! =)
2 AnswersHorses1 decade agoCritique this QH gelding's conformation -GOOD pictures!-?
This is my riding instructor's horse. I am more than likely buying him. Just curious to know what you think of his conformation.
He is 5 years old, and nearly 15.3HH.
I know that he still needs to gain a bit of weight, and a lot of muscle (especially his topline). Just critique his confo. as detailed as you can. Please. =)
Also, right now his name is "The Rock", which I'm not too fond of. Any name suggestions?
He isn't perfectly square in any of these, but they're pretty decent.
Links will be added in details, since Y!A never shows my questions when they contain links.
Thanks! =D
6 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHow do *YOU* deal with a "spooky" horse?
I'm having trouble with my overly-spooky/jumpy Arabian gelding. I've had him for a little over a year and over the post couple of months he's gotten more and more spooky/jumpy, and disrespectful. I did get him when he was emaciated, and his attitude changed as he gained weight (to be expected).. but, it's just the past couple of months that have me worried.
Honestly, it seems like right after I got my mare that he started acting out. He seems like he has lost all respect, trust, everything in me (and everyone else). He also has gotten a "study" behavior (possessive of mares, fighting with other geldings, etc.) He has spooked at stupid things twice out on the trail, dumped me, and took off running. I know that Arabians tend to look at everything and be all "Ahhhh I'm an Arabian!!!!", but he is really getting ridiculous.
I've tried the slow, patient desensitizing approach. After that failed, I tried a fairly blunt approach. Still to no avail. I'm back to the slow, patient thing and it *seems* like we're making a bit of progress.. but not much, if any.
I've been doing a lot of ground work with him, so I haven't ridden him in a few weeks until yesterday. When I was mounting, he kept moving off so I would make him go around in circles around me, make him stand, then mount. If he moved off, I repeated the process. Anyways.. one of the times I was getting back down to make him go in circles, I tapped my leg on his flank and he flipped out, took off (with my foot still in the stirrup). Thankfully, I was able to get my foot out and held onto the rein. Of course, I still got on him (after he would stand still) and had a really nice ride.
Sorry this is so long. Annnnnywaaaaaaays, I guess I'm just trying to hear other peoples techniques with dealing with spooky horses.
BTW, I do have access to several trainers.. if you think that is the best way to go, let me know. But, I'd really like to work on this myself.
11 AnswersHorses1 decade agoWhat is the biggest "thing" you and your horse have overcome?
Basically what the title says.. What is the biggest thing you and your horse have overcome?
It can be anything- from training, to health or trust issues, etc.
I'm just bored, and want to hear people's horsey stories.
7 AnswersHorses1 decade agoWhat do you think this mare is worth? - PS- I HATE YAHOO!-?
GRRRR! I hate Y!A. Anytime I post a question with links, it decides not to show it! Sooo pics and a link to bloodlines will be in details.
Just curious to see what YOU think my mare is worth, right now, as is.
I bought this mare about a month and a half ago with intentions of re-selling her. I'm not at the point that I want to put her for sale yet, but I would like to know what she is worth right now.
*AQHA registered name Parrs Sweet Olena.
*5 years old
*14.3HH and has a nice build
*UTD on farrier, dental, and shots
*Great prospect for barrels, trails, and cow-y work.
*Had 90 days as a 3 year old, and left in a field since. Now started back under saddle with 6-7 rides and doing well. Steering, stopping, backing all good at the walk. Started on trotting. No buck.
Has great personality and temperament. She really tries to please and is extremely willing to do whatever you ask of her. Easy to catch (she'll trot right up to me), loads, bathes, stands for grooming, tacking up, mounting/dismounting, etc. Has came a long way within the short amount of time I've had her.
8 AnswersHorses1 decade agoA few questions.. draw reins, stifles, and saddle fit(bridging)?
First question:
I bought some used draw reins. The type that hooks on under the saddle (or wherever) with fixed snaps, then has the snaps that the draw reins can move through hooked onto the bit. I don't know what to call the material.. it's kind of like a bungee cord, but it's not stretchy. They were sitting in one place for over a year before I bought them, so they're really stiff. What can I do to make them more movable?
Second question:
I had to have the vet out due to my gelding being lame about a week and a half ago. Vet said it is his stifle, but it's pretty mild. He said to walk him up and down a nice big hill that we have, give him 1 gram of bute/day (until the tube was gone, which was last night), and rub liniment on the stifle. He said no riding or lunging at the time. Well, the bute is gone... and he isn't lame anymore. The stifle is still slightly warm. I didn't give him any bute tonight, or rub him with liniment. I will see if he is lame or the stifle is hot again tomorrow. Is it necessary to call the vet back out if he is fine tomorrow? What are your experiences with mild (or severe) stifle issues?
Third question:
My mare is downhill, and has low withers. I'm concerned that my saddle is bridges (or whatever the term should be) on her. I have been looking into "pressure relief pads" or a pad that uses shims. If I understand correctly, for a saddle that bridges.. it is best to start out using front and center shims, then adjust from there? Has anyone had any experience with the Diamond Wool Pressure Relief Pad?
What about other pads that use shims?

1 AnswerHorses1 decade agoDo you feel special with a "Top Contributor" title?
Just wondering..
A lot of people I see on Y!A seem to be quite arrogant with the Top Contributor title. Not only in the horse section. People with that are TC's just seem to be getting more and more cocky as time goes on.
I guess this question could be taken in completely wrong context.. but, I'm still interested in seeing the answers.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and adore all of the TC's answers I get!
So, there are a few questions in this question.
Do you feel extra special with the Top Contributor title?
Do you feel like you DESERVE the title?
Do you feel like there are some people that have no clue what their talking about, yet they still have the TC's badge?
This obviously has little to nothing to do with horses.. so I guess I should add a horse question in here!
Ummm.. What's your favorite thing to do with your horse(s) on a Saturday day or night?
