Going to Hawaii in June, should I invest on a underwater camera or a point and shoot camera?

My initial choice is to buy a underwater camera since I do surf regularly in California so I would have further use for it. My research has indicated that a mobile phone camera is just as good as a point and shoot camera, therefore I'm better off purchasing a high end with long lens camera instead if I choose not to go with the underwater camera option.
