  • What's up with everyone's walls and ceilings?

I was just wondering why most everyone's house that I've been to has walls that look like a 3D map and a ceiling that looks like it has acne. Is it for sound-proofing? Whatever it's for, is it extremely helpful?

  • Is the price-gouging on graduation photos justified?

The company that took pictures for my graduation wants to charge 80 dollars (more for protected paper) for an 8 by 10 for a medium-looking resolution digital photograph of me lamely holding my diploma and smiling in front of a fake (green screen) background. I could easily take a picture like this myself with a cooler pose/background or something for little to no money.

The money-shot of me smiling and shaking the principal's hand seems like a worthwhile picture, but it is similarly expensive, and I could easily 'steal' it by piecing together the segments of it that they let me view, or increasing the size of the thumbnail, or increasing the resolution of the big proof, etc with any photo-editing software. (All of the photos are online.)

But should I? My graduating class had somewhere near 1,000 students. 80 times 1,000 equals 80,000. 80,000 dollars gained from one night from just one school for some lame snapshots if everyone bought one photo. The packages they have cost hundreds of dollars. Most of the student's families do not make 80,000 dollars in one year. Would stealing and teaching others how to steal photos like this be an appropriate response to the grossly overpriced photos that would encourage the company to lower their prices or would it be abominable? What do you think?

I know that the real American way to solve this perceived injustice would be to start a more reasonable event photography company of my own, but who has time for that?

Maybe next we can talk about the price another company is charging for a thin-curtain mumu..

  • Do you know how to multiply large numbers mentally using something akin to factoring?

There was this teacher at this high school I used to go to who could multiply large numbers in his head. He could do it with at least any 3 digit numbers that were given to him, and he said he used something like factoring to do it. He had a math club that I was too uninvolved to go to where he taught people this apparently. He has since disappeared to some higher-paying job and all of the mental math I see on the internet seems to be lame and unsatisfactory. Could someone help me figure out how he did this? Also, any other sort of useful mental math advice would be appreciated. Thanks for reading.

  • My sound randomly doesn't work. boo hoo.?

Hi. I have a run-of-the-mill $700 PC laptop. I like it. Sometimes the sound stops and will either not turn on until I reboot once or twice, or randomly turns back on, or turns back on when I open and close programs that use sound, i.e. games, youtube, and itunes. Most often, when the sound is out, my itunes' songs do not progress when the play button is pushed, but sometimes they do. I find this nuisance bothersome. I do not think anything I am running is out of my computer's capacity. Does anyone out there have a troubleshooting guide to a problem like this? I get frustrated with the on/off, open/close routine. Thanks. :)

  • Does anyone know of a suitable vegan replacement for an egg in a physics school 'egg drop' project?

The project I'm talking about is where one must build a protective container to hold an egg and keep it from breaking when dropped. I would like to use something other than an egg since I'm vegan.
