Would a kindle fire be a good gift if the person receiving it isn't used to any other handheld device?
I've heard a lot of pros and cons about the new Kindle Fire. But most of the cons I've heard are from people comparing the Kindle Fire to their old kindle devices and ipads. I'm getting the kindle fire for someone for Christmas, and the only thing they own that is remotely similar is the iPhone. Will this Kindle Fire be a good gift? Or is ignorance not really bliss?
2 AnswersOther - Electronics10 years agoDoes this make you mad?
I live on a military base in family housing. I've lived here for several years. My son is now 15 months old. Ever since he was born, it seems like they always waited until he went down for a nap to start mowing the grass, or picking up the garbage, or doing some kind of maintenance that involves making a lot of noise right outside his window. Or it will be early in the morning while he's trying to sleep. Also it seems that kids decide to run around outside and scream really loud when he's asleep. It doesn't bother me at all when I'm trying to sleep, but if it wakes him up I usually feel like going outside and choking the inconsiderate person that woke him up. Or spraying them with a water hose, when it's the screaming kids that I'm mad at.
I'm not an unreasonable person. I know that they have to mow the grass and do maintenance and kids have the right to run around and scream (but they really should try to be quieter when it's 7:30 in the morning because many people are trying to sleep). But even though I know it can't be helped, I still feel like choking these people when they wake up my son from a nap. Does anyone else feel this way?
BTW, I would never actually say or do anything to the people that wake him up because they don't know he's asleep and they have to do their jobs.
5 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agoWhy is my macbook pro not charging again?
I have a macbook pro that I got november 2010. A couple months ago it stopped charging. The orange light wouldn't come on, no matter what outlet I used. So finally I took the charger to a Best Buy, which is where I bought the macbook. The guy took my charger and plugged it i to the macbook pro they have in the store. It immediately lit up and started working. So he said it was a hardware issue with my computer and to bring it in. I went home and tried the charger on my computer, just in case. It started charging like nothing was wrong. It's been fine since then, until now. Now it's not charging again. Same thing is happening. The light isn't turning on. And my computer is about to die.
Has this happened to anyone? And how did you fix it? I'm hoping it starts working again like last time...
2 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoAre these symptoms of ovarian cysts or something more serious?
Warning: This is going to have some gross details.
I'm 24, and I have a son who is 14 months old. For the first few months after he was born I had irregular periods but for the past 6 months they've been normal.
My LMP started on April 12. The first day seemed pretty normal. That night I put on an overnight pad like I usually do. Usually I don't need one that big because I don't bleed until I get up in the morning to go to the bathroom. The next morning, the sheets were bloody. I had completely soaked the pad and it leaked through my pants. When I got to the bathroom huge clots started coming out. If they were all put together, they would probably have equaled the size of an egg. I've never had something like this happen, so I called my mom and told her about it. She said the same thing had happened to her every period for a few years before she hit menopause. She used to sleep with a hospital pad under her because she would always leak. So I just wrote it off as something unusual but nothing to worry about. It was pretty heavy till the next day, but it lasted longer than my periods usually do. Usually they last about six days, and this lasted about 9. Still, nothing to really worry about. Then 2 days ago, I woke up and had what I thought was gas pains. It was sharp and in my lower abdomen. It stopped about 5 minutes later, and I got up and went about my day. Later, I was standing in the bathroom fixing my hair when I felt something warm come out. I checked, and it was blood. Bright red. Occasionally, I've had a small amount of breakthrough bleeding, rarely pink, usually brown. This was bright red, and there was more than a small amount. About 2 tbsp came out. An hour later, it had stopped completely. Later that day, I had a weird mood swing. I was feeling really anxious, like I was having an anxiety attack or something. I've never felt like that before and it was kind of scary to feel that way and not know why. Yesterday and today I've spotted a little. It's all been bright red. Also, I've felt a little nauseous twice in the past couple of days, but both times were after I ate something so it may not be anything to worry about. Also I've had occasional sharp throbbing pains on both sides of my lower abdomen but it didn't last long enough or hurt enough to worry me.
We've had unprotected sex on day 7 of my LMP, but that was the only time unprotected. Maybe pregnancy would explain the weird spotting and mood swings, but it doesn't explain why my lmp was so heavy.
I'm thinking this may have happened because of an ovarian cyst rupturing. I'm going to see an obgyn soon for a checkup, but I'm wondering if maybe all this may point to something more serious. Have any ideas?
3 AnswersWomen's Health1 decade agoWhat is the difference between these two types of Luvs diapers?
http://www.amazon.com/Luvs-Diapers-Big-Pack-Count/...
http://www.amazon.com/Luvs-Diapers-Ultra-Leakguard...
I can't figure out the difference between these two diapers. Both are size 4. Both are for the same weight. The only difference I can see is one has a picture of a boy on the front and one has a picture of a girl. On the diapers themselves, one has a picture of a purple monkey, and one has a picture of Blues Clues. Other than that, I can see no difference at all. I can't even really find anything different on the boxes themselves. But for some reason, the one with the pictures of the monkey always leak overnight, and the one with Blues Clues doesn't. I have a 14 month old son. Can anyone tell me what the difference is, if any?
3 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agoAm I doing something wrong or is this game just messed up? Imagine Babyz question.?
Several years ago I bought the Nintendo DS game Imagine Babyz. I tried to play it but it was pretty hard. Nothing I did seemed to make the parents happy. So I put it away and forgot about it. About a week ago, I found it and decided to give it another shot. I have a one year old son now, so I thought maybe since I've experienced the real thing, this game shouldn't be as hard. I was wrong. It's even harder.
Let me give a few examples. Mr. Stick drops Ella off at asks me to give her a bath so his wife won't get mad at him. When he leaves, the first thing I do is give her a bath. I cleaned her so well that the bath was over 14 seconds before the timer ended. Then I entertained her and put her down for a nap. Then when she woke up I entertained her again. But when her dad came to get her, he said she was dirty. When Tom's parent dropped him off, they said he was grumpy. So I entertained him and made him happy. But when his dad came to get him he said Tom still looked grumpy. This happens quite often. I do everything the parents ask me to do, but when they come get the babies they say I haven't done what they asked. Is there a secret to this game that I'm not understanding, or is this game just messed up? Taking care of a real baby is easier than this game.

My contact RX says both eyes are -5.75. So which one is it? Or are contact strengths different from glasses strengths?
1 AnswerOptical1 decade agoHow many layers of nail polish can possibly be applied?
I decided to see how many layers of clear nail polish I can put on my nails. I'm only applying it to the nails of one hand so I can compare the painted nails to the unpainted nails. There's no special reason I'm doing this. I just want to see what will come of it. I've found in past experiences that if you apply nail polish too quickly, it will stay squishy and form tiny air bubbles. So I'm taking this pretty slow. I'm only putting on about 3 or 4 coats a day. I'm just wondering how far this can go. How many layers are possible? I looked to see if there were any weird world records for most layers of polish or something but I didn't see anything. Has anyone else ever tried this? I know it's weird, but... : )
3 AnswersMakeup1 decade agoWhat should I do about my baby waking up too early every morning?
My son has slept through the night since he was 8 weeks old. He's 1 year old now. He'll be 13 months in 2 weeks. For some reason, he's started waking up very early in the morning. He usually wakes up anywhere between 8 and 9 in the morning. For the past week and a half, he's been waking up at 5:30 and crying until I come and get him. He doesn't really cry hard like he does when something is wrong or when he has a bad dream. He just lays there and kind of whines. He'll pause for a couple seconds then whines again. The longer he lays there the louder it gets. When I pick him up he grabs his binkie and put it in his mouth, then lays on my shoulder. I usually pry him off so I can change his diaper. It's always very wet. He just lays there with his eyes half closed while I do that. Then I rock him while he lays on my shoulder for a few minutes. Then I put him back in his crib. Usually he grabs Pooh and hugs him really tight, with his eyes closed. Then I say goodnight and walk out of the room. He goes back to sleep until his regular wake-up time. Obviously, he's not ready to get up yet. So why does he wake up every single morning? He hates having his diaper changed, and I change it every time I get up with him, so it can't be that he wants his diaper changed.
I'm thinking about using a form of the cry it out method. He's not hurt, he's not ready to get up, he's not in pain. So I'm going to start letting him cry for 20 minutes before I go get him. I've not been going to get him as soon as he starts crying, but I'm not sure how long I've been waiting. I've found that when a baby cries, 5 minutes can seem like 30.
Is this just a phase that most kids go through? If you've gone through this, what did you do? How long did it last and did it stop on its own?
4 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agoHow do fish get to the pet store?
I was just wondering how fish get from wherever they are hatched to the pet store. I know when I buy fish I have to get them in a bag of water and carefully hold it until I get home. I also have bought beta fish before. They come in the covered cup, and they fit pretty well in the cup holder of the car. But what about big tanks of fish? Do they have a special truck they use to transport the fish?
Also, I heard you can buy exotic fish online, and they deliver the fish to you somehow. How does that work?
Last question: I have one female beta fish. There is a possibility we may move in the next couple years. She's a young fish, so she may still be alive when we move. Should I take her back to the pet store, or is there a way to take her with me? The place we may move is about a 20 hour trip. With 2 dogs and a baby, it will probably be broken up into 2 days.
I'm not planning on buying any fish online or anything, I was just wondering how it all worked.
4 AnswersFish1 decade agoWhy does it seem that many people that experience hypnopompic hallucinations see mainly spiders?
I've had these types of hallucinations since I was really small. I believe they started in elementary school. They used to happen frequently but have lessened to about once a month. I've looked it up online, and there's very little information about it. It seems that, out of the information I can find, that many people see spider. I've always seen insects of some sort, but usually I see spiders. During my most recent experience, I saw spiders coming down from the ceiling on webs and landing on me. I could see and feel them. After years of this, I've learned that all I need to do is turn on the light and they disappear. If people were having hallucinations about all kinds of different things all the time, I wouldn't be asking. But it seems a little strange that so many people see spiders. Why spiders? Maybe there's something more here that needs looking into. Does anyone have any ideas?
I should add that I'm not really afraid of spiders, aside from not wanting to get bitten by a poisonous one. It's just a little scary to wake up in bed and see and feel big black spiders crawling all over you and under the covers.
2 AnswersPsychology1 decade agoIs this fin rot or something else?
I have a 35 gallon tank. I've had other fish in it before. After they all died except for the female beta fish, I decided to get some more non-schooling fish. I wanted a male beta, but the only male available looked sick. But I did get 2 really pretty sarasa comet goldfish. At first, everything seemed fine. I got them on Saturday. It's now Monday. They look like they have fin rot. Their tail fins are torn looking and ragged. They look like someone has taken scissors and cut them lengthwise. Both have a vertical whitish streak running down the middle of their tails where the tears seem to stop. I first noticed it this morning and it's gotten progressively worse throughout the day. The female beta still looks fine. Her fins are immaculate, actually. I re-checked the water quality and everything is great. I'm wondering if anyone knows specifically about sarasa comet fish and if this may possibly just be them adjusting to a new tank. If it is tail rot, how did it affect them so quickly (i noticed the torn tails about 40 hours after adding them to the tank). Why weren't there any other symptoms, such as red streaks in the fins? And why did they go downhill so quickly?
I know there are medications that can cure tail/fin rot, but I recently read about a method where you"paint" the fins of the fish with peroxide to kill the bacteria. Just wondering if anyone has tried that method and if it worked or not.
2 AnswersFish1 decade agoHow long should I wait before starting to worry about my baby's refusal to eat solid food?
I asked this question a few months before.
My son will be 1 in 3 weeks. He still refuses to eat solid food. He eats a big bowl of baby oatmeal for breakfast after an 8 ounce bottle. For lunch, after a 6 ounce bottle, he eats a fruit, veggie, and some baby oatmeal. Same for dinner. Then he has a 6 ounce bottle before bedtime. But he won't eat anything that has to be chewed. He actually vomits if anything solid goes in his mouth. He likes to lick the flavor off of chips, but once it's gone he drops that chip and reaches for another. I've tried giving him the baby finger foods and biter biscuits. He just doesn't eat them. I read somewhere that kids his age are eating fish and steamed veggies and soft fruits. He makes a face and either spits them out or vomits them out. If this continues, at what age should I start to worry? Is this normal? I know he won't be taking a lunch box full of gerber food to school with him, but I don't know if baby food is enough for a growing boy past the age of one.
2 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agoIs it wrong for a baby to drink coffee?
My son is 11 months old, and he's starting to get interested in what other people are drinking. The other day, he tried to take a sip of my coffee, and my husband freaked out and started yelling. He thinks that letting him caffeine is really really bad. He told me that he read somewhere that caffeine leaches the calcium from kids bones. He's also worried that my son will grow up to be fat if he drinks caffeine. I think he also mentioned that it will stunt his growth, but I've had coffee since I was a baby and I'm 6ft tall, and my brother is 6ft 6 inches, so the saying that it stunts your growth is complete bull i think. I'm just wondering if there's really any harm in letting a baby have a few sips of coffee if he wants some. I've let him try it, and he gets tired of it after a few sips and stops crying for me to give him some, and it's never too close to his naps, so it doesn't affect his sleep at all that I can see. Does anyone know if there are any proven harmful effects of babies drinking caffeine?
7 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agoHow do you mothers do it?
I'm the mother of a 10 month old baby boy who is just starting to walk. His name is Aiden. His name means little fire, and he really lives up to it. He's into EVERYTHING. And he's really clingy. I really don't know how I would take care of another baby. When he was born, I didn't have time for anything else but taking care of him. He's just now getting to the point to being able to entertain himself for short periods of time. I'm not taking birth control, but my husband and I are using condoms. I know they aren't 100% effective, but if I get pregnant again we'll gladly accept baby #2. I'm just wondering, how to moms of more than one child manage? How do you take care of your older child while feeding your baby? What if both need you at one time? How are you able to take care of your older child while your new baby is causing you to be sleep deprived? Just wondering. I'm not worried about being pregnant. I know I'm not. Its just I used to want several kids, but right now I just can't imagine taking care of another child with my son always getting into things. If I don't watch him like a hawk, he'll end up sticking his hands in the dog's water bowl or rummaging around in the trash can. Or, his most favorite activity, opening the pantry and playing with the bottles of spices.
8 AnswersParenting1 decade agoHow can I get a cd of Moose A Moose songs?
My son is 10 months old. Ever since he was 8 weeks old, he's been fascinated by Moose A Moose. Whenever he sees Moose on the TV, he's captivated. When he's cranky, my husband and I can sing him a Moose song and he'll recognize the tune and start smiling. So, I was wondering, is there a CD of all the Moose songs? I really want a CD he can listen to whenever he wants so he doesn't have to wait for the break between shows. I've tried looking it up online, but all I can find for sale are the pillows. I already made him a Moose pillow for Christmas. I don't see why anyone would buy something that's so easy to make. Anyway, if anyone knows of a CD like this existing, please let me know where to find it. Also, if you are sure that a Moose CD doesn't exist, let me know so I can stop looking. Thanks in advance.
In case you don't know who Moose is, I'm talking about the yellow guy on Nick Jr.
2 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoWhy is my son's penis red and swollen?
My son is 10 months old. Yesterday he woke up early from a nap and everything seemed fine, but about an hour later he started crying. We were holding him, but he was still crying quite a bit, for almost an hour. If we put him down, he would scream. When we finally decided it was bath time, we saw that his penis was really really red. We put him in the tub, and he was siting on one side, like he was trying to stay off of it. We aren't sure if he peed in the tub or not. When he got out we dressed him and gave him his bottle. He had stopped crying. When he was done I read him a story, then put him down. He was exhausted, so he went to sleep in less than 10 minutes. Today, it's still a little red, but he hasn't peed in a while. If he hasn't peed by the time he wakes up from his nap, we're going to try and get him to pee by putting him in a warm bath. Hopefully he'll go. Whether he goes or not, we're going to take him to an urgent care center. The ER takes too long, and the doctors office is closed. We're thinking, since everything is red, that its diaper rash. He has some more diaper rash below that area that I've been trying to treat with ointment. I'm really worried about him. And I'm wondering what the doctor may do. Does anyone have any advice? We'll be leaving for the doctor in a couple hours.
2 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agoHow do you know your child is ready to switch from a crib to a bed?
My son is 10 months old, and I've just now stopped using his bumper. I tried to stop before, but he kept sticking his legs between the bars for fun and getting stuck. The decision to stop using the bumper got me wondering when we should turn his crib into a toddler bed. My main concern is him falling out. When I check on him at night before I go to bed, he's usually sleeping at the bottom or top of his bed, never in the middle. I don't know if he moves in his sleep, but I do know he moves around before falling asleep. I often hear him on the monitor, turning on his mobile and moving around. I read that children usually make the switch between 1 1/2 to 3 years old. But how do I know that he is ready for us to turn his crib into a toddler bed? All we'll do is take one side off. But I'm worried about him falling out. What should I look for in him to know he's ready for us to take the side off? I know he's way too young for that now. I'm just wondering what to look for when he gets older.
Also, at what age should do kids usually sleep under a sheet or blanket?
5 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoIs it common for babies to float?
I just watched some videos on you tube about babies floating. Adults, most likely the babies parents, would have the camera rolling as they pushed their babies into the water. These babies were under a year old. All the babies I saw would kicked to the surface and then turn and float on their back, holding their head above water. They would float there for several minutes. Sometimes they would be in the water with the baby, and just push them under. The babies would swim to the surface. I'm just wondering if this is a normal instinctive reaction for babies. I know that after a baby takes it's first breath, it instinctively knows not to breathe underwater. Is it also instinctive to float? Some of these videos were advertising for special swimming lessons for babies 6 months and up. But some were actual home movies of babies floating.
Oh, and I just want to say that even though the babies could float and not drown, it's not cool of their parents to push them in the water like that. Yeah, it's neat to see them swim, but the baby is probably terrified. Just my opinion on the matter.
5 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agoWhy is this so hard for me to do? Long explanation...?
As a child, my father was verbally and mentally abusive. During summer vacations and school breaks, if he saw me playing a game or watching TV, he would get pissed off and ask what I had done around the house that day. If I couldn't rattle off an acceptable list of things, he would get pissed. He expected me to be cleaning the house every single day. I began hiding and avoiding him when he was home, and walked on eggshells until it was time for school. At the same time, my brother, who is 16 months younger than me, could be playing his playstation all day long and my father wouldn't care. The only thing that kept me going was the knowledge that I would one day turn 18 and join the Air Force. It was my light at the end of the tunnel. Well, I did join the Air Force. I have the best husband in the world (who is nothing like my dad). I've spent one year in South Korea and six months in Iraq. My convoy got hit by an IED. I got shot at. I got pregnant and spent a lot of that time alone while my husband flew missions to Iraq. I had a beautiful son. All this I've done without batting an eye. So, why is standing up to my father so hard to do? He's visited a few times. The first couple of times, it was with his new girlfriend. I kind of get the feeling that he only came up because she had never met me and guilted him into coming up. So he invited himself up. The only time he's been up since then was without her, because he wanted to see my son. He made it perfectly clear by his actions that he dislikes my husband. It's very uncomfortable when he comes to visit. He sent me an e-mail a couple days ago saying he wants to come up and see my son, and he's probably going to fly and rent a car to come up. It makes me mad that he's inviting himself up. My husband is about to go on another mission on Sunday, and I am REALLY uncomfortable with the idea of being in the same house alone with my father, even for a few days.
I'm 24 years old, and I've forgiven him for making my entire childhood so crappy, but I will never forget. He'll probably never change. I just don't understand why it's so hard for me to stand up to him, after all that he's done. He's never shown any remorse for how he treated me. I have every reason to never want to see him again. But I can't bring myself to say that to him. Why?
If he died, I would feel a little sad because he's such an awful person. He'll never enjoy life like I do. But mostly I would feel so relieved because I wouldn't have to deal with him anymore.
After having a child of my own, I just can't understand how he could have treated me like he did if he actually loved me. I know he had some problems with his parents growing up. But so did I, and I vowed it would stop with me. I would treat my son the way I wish I would have been treated.
Am I just a coward for not being able to tell him how I feel and stand up to him when he invites himself up?
