  • How do I get a higher score on the math section of the SAT?

Okay, so I've always hated math, but I actually made an effort to study for the math portion of the SAT - I read through the Princeton Review the night before. So I'm not mad or anything with my score, but I feel like I can make myself more competitive if I score better on math.

    These were my scores:

    Writing - 720

    Math - 530

    Reading - 720

    Essay - 10

    Total: 1970

  • What grade would this DBQ get? From 1-7?

The period of 1946-1989 was a period of great metamorphosis in Europe. Nations began to question any legitimate reasons for war and began looking for alternatives, such as forming a type of alliance that would unify Europe in a way similar to America. The opinions of people varied wildly and evolved over time, and by looking at the opinions of leaders in the 1940s, then the 1950s, the 1960s-1970s, and finally, the 1980s, one can see that European sentiments gradually became more willing for a unified Western Europe.

In 1946, World War One had just ended and many leaders in Europe felt an overwhelming resentment towards Germany. Charles de Gaulle, president of France, said that all Frenchmen were violently opposed to any unified German state, and that German reunification should be prevented (Doc. 2). De Gaulle didn’t wish to see any kind of unified Germany, let alone be in an alliance with them. Similarly Vishinski, the soviet deputy minister, believed that through the Marshall Plan, the US, with the aid of France and the UK, were trying to divide Western Europe from Easter Europe (Doc. 3). However, as Deputy Prime minister, perhaps Vishinski was only saying what he was being told to say. Perhaps the Soviet government didn’t wish to see a unified Western Europe, as it could potentially create an enemy. In the 1940s, one man did wish to see a unified Western European family, where even small nations would be equal to great ones (Doc. 1). Churchill may have believed this because he felt unification would be moral and practical. He was alone in his beliefs at this time.

In the 1950s, the alacrity of a European amalgamation of states became more pronounced. Shuman, prime minister of France, believed that if there was to be any peace in Europe, unification must take place and France and Germany must come together (Doc. 5). Schuman perhaps wished to see a Europe strong and complete, and he believed unification was the only way. Adenauer, chancellor of West Germany, also believed that Europe should be unified. He though the time of nationalism was over (Doc. 6). Adenauer wished to see a Europe where everyone began to see in large terms. He may have held this belief due to the fact a many of his people also wished to see a united Germany. Perhaps he was giving the people what they wanted. Finally, British Finance Minister wished to see a Britain free from a union, but associating with the initiative as well (Doc. 7). In the 1950s, many British people wished to keep their sovereignty and Minister Macmillan was illustrating this very point in his statement. He wished for the best of both worlds, sovereignty and benefits from such a union. Openness for such a union was growing.

By the 1960s – 1970s, “the six” had already formed the European Economic Committee, and most people supported unification already. Some people now wished to join, such as England, but French president de Gaulle said that because through the ‘50s they had been opposed to the union, they shouldn’t be allowed to join (Doc. 8). France was one of the original six, and because they had already joined they weren’t willing to let a country separated geographically and politically to join. Meanwhile, Brandt, chancellor of West Germany said that the Marshall plan was the building blocks of unification (Doc. 9). He was probably happy with America.

Finally in the 1980s, because most of Europe was already dedicated to unification, minister of Ireland, Lynch was glad they joined, but didn’t want to be neutral (Doc. 10). At this point in time, Ireland was simply happy to be a part of any more aspects. Similarly, Thatch believed the currencies should be kept separate, but that Europe should still be more united (Do. 12). Britons wanted to keep their sovereignty, and although they didn’t want more aspects of unification, they were happy to unify Europe somewhat. Finally, Gonzalez, minister of Spain, wished to join the EEC, but they didn’t want to give up their isolationism and join NATO (Doc. 11).So although these three wished for a unified Germany, none wished to give up certain aspects of their freedom. Opinion evolved through these four decades.

  • Will three AP classes kill me?

So for my junior year, I'm planning on taking:

    AP Environmental Science

    AP English Language & Composition

    AP US History

I'm also class president, lead a pretty active social life, and was planning on running cross country next year. Will I be able to manage this schedule, or do I need to give something up?

  • How terrible are my PSAT scores?

I'm in tenth grade and I got 66 in Critical Reading, 54 in Mathematics, and 59 in Writing Skills. That's a 179, or about 87% better than the college-bound juniors who took the test. Is that very horrible?

  • What is the literary meaning for this paragraph?

"When I see birches bend to left and right

Across the lines of straighter darker trees,

I like to think some boy's been swinging them.

But swinging doesn't bend them down to stay.

... One could do worse than be a swinger of birches."
