  • Windows XP is asking for a password but I have never set one. How to I get Windows to load?

My Toshiba Satellite P30 has 2 users set up - my wife and me. Neither of us has ever set a password. Last night, it displayed a different XP screen when shutting down.

Today, it brings up a form showing my user name and asking for my Windows password ... which doesn't exist ... before it will load Windows XP. It won't proceed without a password.

I rebooted in safe mode and was offered the option of continuing the reboot or restoring my system to an earlier date. I restored it to a date when everything was fine. It then rebooted OK and windows started up as usual - no password required. When shutting down, it showed the same unfamiliar XP screen I had seen the night before.

On rebooting, normally or in safe mode, it now demands my non-existent windows password. Any ideas please ... in idiot language if possible please. As you can tell, what I know about computers wouldn't quite fill a postcard. Thanks.
