What is causing head shaking?
My pony is great in every way apart from that he bobs/shakes his head out hacking. He gets up to the woods and then starts plunging his head down. Even when I completely give him the reins, he puts it down then flicks it back up again and then down. This got better for a while but seems to have reverted back again redently. I am very light with my hand and he is in a happy mouth snaffle and a well fitting saddle.
It is so irritating. Any ideas how I can help resolve it? He only does this out hacking, not in the school.
5 AnswersHorses8 years agoHow can I stop this mare from rearing?
The 4 year old grey mare that I have been asked to ride has a rearing issue. She rears when she hacks out on her own when she reaches the end of the lane and she also rears in the arena most of the time at certain points and does this every single time. The guy who trains her at the moment just whacks her silly but she still does it every time he rides her.
I was thinking of trying some exercises to increase her confidence because she seems quite nervous and jumpy even when in the field and in her stable. What do you think?
6 AnswersHorses1 decade agoDoes anyone know any jumping exercises to help my horses jumping technique?
Me and my mum share a 14.3 Trotter Gelding and he has been very badly schooled in the past and had got into the habit of bombing around, trying to do everything at breakneck speed. We have re schooled him and he has improved no end with gentle, calm walk and trotting work. We have got his canter right and have now moved on to working on his jump.
At first, he tried to bomb at everything, but will have a go at everything because he is so honest. I didn't stand for this and have slowed him down. However he has absolutely rubbish technique and just basically tries to throw himself over jumps just to get over them! In the past he has been a show jumper apparently, which I definitely think was a lie as he must have only relied on his speed!
Does anyone know any exercises to help him? I have been doing jumps on the diagonal and circling him before the jump until he is calm and then jumping it, which is calming him down but I would now like to work more on his style over fences.
4 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHow should I sell my horse?
I am trying to sell my 15 hh Hackney x Cob. He is 12, excels xc, and been placed in every dressage competition we have done and in his previous home. He has a great jump over show jumps and absolutely loves hacking. Has done fun rides and xc as well as pairs xc competitions and in the past done sj shows but not with me. Very responsive, works in an outline, forward going but always snaffle mouth. Very sound horse, has only ever had a poison foot due to a thorn getting stuck in it in the 2 and half years I have had him. Sensible, never wrecks his rugs in the field. He is easy to catch, shoe, load, clip and good in the stable. Perfect manners. However can pack a big buck sometimes to test you and if he gets very excited but not often at all.
can anyone give me advice on his advert or is anyone interested in him? He is such a wonderful horse with such a lovely temprament and is so funny! He will undo your zip to get a treat! He will come with all tack and rugs.
5 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHow to teach a young pony to canter?
I am at present trying to teach a small pony to canter. She is 4 and a half years old and works in a riding school. she is about 12.2 hh and quite unfit as she only works on weekends and walks and trots with small children due to her height. I understand this means she may be unfit and unable to canter long.
The riding school owner has asked me to put some time in with her and teach her to canter, making sure she learns the proper aids and picks up canter when I ask.
At the moment she runs really fast in trot and occasionally pics up canter for a few strides along the long side. I have now slowed her down straight away if she doesn't pick it up when I ask her, but she doesn't seem to be getting any where fast!
Any tips?
8 AnswersHorses1 decade agoCan anyone give me some tips for my first time showing?
Im showing my 15hh Hackney x cob at the weekend. He is very dark liver chestnut with a ginger mane and multicoloured tail! He is gorgeous :)
I've never done any showing before and need help! How should I stand for the judges? What should I wear?
I cant plait his mane if I cant plait his tail, as someone pulled it before I had him and it still hasn't grown out far enough for me to plait. Should I just brush his mane and tail thoroughly and put some de-tangler in it?
I am entering him in best condition and riding school horse, both in hand.
Any tips much appreciated.
Here is a link to a photos of him
8 AnswersHorses1 decade agoShould I get my horse a stronger bit?
My 10 year old 15hh Hackney x Cob gelding can be really strong out hacking and takes his bit in his teeth and runs off. Whenever I go away and leave him with friends to ride, he runs off with them and so now everyone wont ride him because they are too scared of him. In the school and on the ground he is a perfect gentleman and never strong. Just hacking. He has never run off with me. Should I get him a stronger bit for hacking?
15 AnswersHorses1 decade agoIs my gelding suitable for showing?
I have a 15hh Hackney x Cob Gelding who I have been told is very handsome and would be perfect for showing classes.
I am just wondering what type showing class to enter him in and if you think he has the looks and breed quality etc.
He is 10, and an excellent mover with a real quality about him. He's a real gentleman

4 AnswersDrawing & Illustration1 decade agoI have a 15hh Cob x Hackney, what should I be feeding him?
He is on heavy work, jumping some days and flat work on the other days. He has at least one day off a week and when he is not ridden his is in the field on grass livery. What should I feed him to keep his energy and condition healthy?
