  • Wireless LAN setup?

Let me see if I can explain the problem that I am having.

I have a desktop computer running XP which I trying to connect to a home network using a Ralink wireless PCI card (WgP/G using RT61 chipset), my service provider is Prodigy Infinitum in Mexico. After installing the drivers for the card everything appears to be OK even after typing the WEP key for the modem (I am able to see that I am connecting to the name provided to the modem as Infinitum**** at 54 Mbps and with a strong signal). The problem is that after opening IE I am not able to connect to any website at all (yahoo, msn, google, etc) and I am also not able to see the shared folders on other computers (three more computers on the network sharing folders and printers).

If I take the computer for which I am having problems from the home office to my apartment I am able to connect to Internet and another computers that is sharing folders and printers.

After some research and "playing" with settings I am able to see the following:

Ipconfig results on computers able to shared folders and connect to Internet:

    IP addresses as 192.168.1.x

    subnet 255.255.255.0

    IP of modem/router 192.168.1.254

computer with the problem is listing IP address as 169.254.40.x (I am guessing that this is the main problem)

Prodigy Infinitum appears to only accept IP addresses in the IP range of 192.168.1.64 to 192.168.1.253

The modem/router I am using in the home office location is a 2wire 2701HG-T and in my apartment is a 2wire 2700HG (I am not able to swap them since they are not exactly mine)

    Any ideas/suggestions will be appreciated.
