  • Do I have a HIV risk?

An incident happened to me this year that has been bothering me. I am a college student who lives in a dorm (nasty environment). I was taking a shower and I cut myself in the palm of my hand and quickly washed it and tried to stop the bleeding as best as I could. As I stopped the bleeding (didn't put bandaid on), I went to class and noticed additional blood near the cut (I'm not sure if it was mine or somebody else's). What are the chances of getting HIV from common surfaces such as door handles, doors, and chairs if i came in contact with somebody else's blood?

It was a winter day - does the virus live longer in cold or will it die quickly?

  • Throat ulcer near tonsil?

A month ago I developed tonsillitis which was successfully treated with a course of amoxicillin. My tonsils remained slightly larger than normal. I also get small tonsil stones (guessing because of my tonsillits) but no biggie there. Recently, I had pains on one side of my throat which my doc diagnosed as an ulcer (i think its under my tonsils, not too sure though). He said that it was caused by a virus and it should go away soon (which it did). I informed him that I had tonsillitis the month before and he did a culture which came back negative.

Is my situation anything to worry about? Is it more likely that a virus caused this (had the sniffles with the ulcer) or as a side effect of my tonsillitis?

  • Minor car accident, who assumes liability?

Okay, long story short, I went to a party with some friends and they had all drank. I was one of the only one sober. Prior to leaving, I was asked by this guy to drive them back with his car. After the party, I got them back safely. However, as I was backing out of the parking lot, a pole on the side brushed against the left bumper leaving minor scratches. I would like to add that the owner of the car physically handed me the car keys and was 20 years old at this time - he was under the influence underage ( I have proof of this in writing).

9 months after this incident, the guy contacts me for reimbursement. On plenty of occasions, prior to this, I had willingly offered him money for these small scratches, but he refused and calmly told me "not to worry about it". Again, I agreed for half the repair damages as he suggested (total repair bill came up to around $400). By my request, he sent me his repair documents which included an insurance claim (he told me he paid from his own pocket, which I didn't buy after looking at the document) He also included an invoice of the repair which was skillfully cropped so I could not see the method of payment. What made me tick was that he also included a car rental bill of 5 DAYS which he wanted me to pay. First of all, I can tell that this guy is pushing his luck… the claim that he sent me had his policy number, and a “point of impact” which was the Right T-bone. The scratches were on the driver’s side of the car from which I can confirm with pictures of the area he sent me. On top of that, the repair took 5 days, more than enough to fix some scratches don’t you think?

I then replied back to him disagreeing with the car rental payments. He then asks me to pay the entire repair cost which I refused as this incident was not completely my fault. Now he is threatening to sue me.

So my questions is: Who is responsible for assuming liability of this petty accident? Remember, that he was drunk, underage, willingly handed me the keys to get him back safely, and from what I can tell, he gave me the wrong information regarding the repair.

  • What are the chances of getting HIV from environmental factors?

Without any sexual or intentional exchange of body fluid encounters?

  • What are the chances of contracting HIV from environmental factors?

Assuming you haven't had any high risk activity such as sharing needles or oral/anal/vaginal sex.

Also, how long can the HIV virus live outside of the human body? And how much of the virus do you need to get into the body before you contract HIV? Also, are AIDS patients always sick when their CD4 count is under 200

  • I need reassurance. A bit paranoid?

Let me get this straight first. I'm 18 years old and I have had no sexual encounters or exchanged any bodily fluids with anybody.

Recently I've been getting sick quite frequently. 2 months back, I started sneezing really bad, had a stuffy nose, sore throat, and a cough. After 4 days, I was fine, except the cough stayed. About a month later, I got sick again with the same symptoms, but sneezed more excessively (both times sore throats lasted only 2 days). 2 weeks later (now), i have a sore throat. My papillae seem whiter than normal. I've noticed that my throat usually starts to hurt whenever I drink a caffeine or soda (I had a Monster energy drink and the next day I had a sore throat). You could say that I have a mild sore throat (pain isn't that bad). The thing that worries me is the frequency of my sore throats (I had strep last year).

Could this be because of the increased levels of pollen? I have never been allergic to pollen before.

I am getting a bit paranoid. When I look at my throat, towards the circumvillate papillae, it seems reddened and a bit inflamed. Is that normal for a sore throat?

Also, I am becoming paranoid that I have contracted HIV. is that possible?

  • Continuous sore throat?

2 weeks ago, I had stuffy nose, excessive sneezing, watery eyes, sore throat and coughing for a week. The sneezing, stuffy nose, and watery eyes went away within the week, but the coughing (wet cough) stayed. Last week my coughing went away. Theres been some irritability in my throat since, and when I drank 1 can of soda, my sore throat kicked back in. Also, I never experienced extreme fatigue, fever, or appetite loss when I was sick.

What's the cause for this sore throat?

  • My parents are stressed all the time?

What can I do to relieve their stress? It seems all they do these days is worry. They have been worrying about the family business in which my family members are disrespecting my parents. They work 7 days a week to care for the business and all these people see are the tiny flaws that nobody can control - now it seems that they want to sell the business and my parents are under a lot of stress and pressure.

I also worry about their health... i'm always worrying that something serious might happen to them. I can't take it because I love them so much, I don't know what i'll do if anything happens to them, especially when i'm away at college.

So please, what are some ways to relieve mine and their stress and also ways that I can keep them healthy?

    Thanks

  • medical school prerequisites?

I've noticed that med schools require a year in college calculus during undergrad. Does it matter what kind of calculus I took? I took applied calculus since it was recommended for my major. I presume that it would count as a calculus course, would it not?

  • Medical school questions?

What do you think my chances are of getting into Ohio State College of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins, University of North Carolina Medical School

    -GPA 4.0

    -MCAT of 39Q

-Moderate amount ($8000-$14000) scholarship recipient that requires a minimum 30 hours community service to keep scholarship

-Hospital volunteer since freshmen year of college

    -Undergraduate research

    -Summer research fellowship at hospital.

-Member of an ethnic club and a pre-med society

I know these would get me into any public medical school but what of my chances on HMS, JH, Yale, Stanford, etc...

  • a few questions about medical school?

    1) Does the name of my undergraduate school where i will recieve my Bachelors of Science degree matter? Lets say we have student A and student B. Student A attends the University of Cincinnati while Student B attend the University of Michigan. Student A also has a higher GPA and MCAT score (lets say 40Q w/ 4.0 GPA) while Student B has a MCAT score of 36R w/ 3.8 GPA. Both students also have the same number of extra curricular activities. If both student A and student B apply to Harvard medical school or johns hopkins medical school, which student would be chosen, A or B?

    2) Does medical school frown upon college transfers during undergraduate education. If I were to transfer as a sophomore to another, better school would the selection board frown upon that and lower my chances of getting in even if I maintained a great GPA and got a great MCAT score (student A)?

the reason that I'm asking these questions is because I am having doubts about my university. As a senior I got accepted into Ohio State and UofCincinnati. Both schools are great, but looking back i feel that i should have chosen Ohio state for the schools reputation over UC at which I won $14,000 in a scholarship competition. I currently have a 4.0 GPA and I hear from my brother at OSU that the coursework is pretty much the same.
