I am an Electrical Designer, but more importantly, I teach Seven Star Preying Mantis Kung Fu in Tyler Texas. I am a nationally ranked Jau Gow lvl 4 with the United States Kung Fu Exchange Federation. Happily married for almost 6 yrs after dating for 6. We currently have 1 child, a wonderful little girl, about 18 months old.

  • I would to learn to fly a helicopter?

I am 28, married, one child, some college, but no degree, IQ 127, and teach Kung Fu (3rd degree). I took the ASVAB in high school and scored very well, though I don't remember the actual scores. The Navy wanted me for Nuclear Engineering. But what I really want to do is to learn to fly helicopters.

I have been looking at Civilian instruction, but it is expensive and does not allow me to serve my country. It seems that the Army WOCS is my only choice for military service in this field at my age.

    My questions:

How can I find out my old ASVAB score? Does it expire?

How long does WOCS + flight school take?

Where is the training done at?

Is it available for the Reserves?

How long can I expect to be under contract?

What are my chances (does not have to be a combat craft) if I score very well on a retake of the ASVAB.

I would like to have a better idea of whats involved before I talk to my Wife about it, then a recruiter. Personal experience would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

  • Navy elistment questions?

The Navy has been calling be for a while now. I took the ASVAB a long time ago (10yrs) in HS. I did very well, though I dont remember my score. I decided to go to college instead, but I didnt finish. My GPA was very good (3.7 or so in an engineering degree), but I didnt like the degree anymore, so I didnt finish. Now I am considering joining the Navy again at age 28. I would really like to learn to fly helicopters.

What are the chances of and Enlisted being able to do that?

  • Fellow Instructors - anyone have a student make you feel dumb?

Every so often I get a student that asks me a question that I can not seem to answer properly. I usually end up standing there, dumbfounded for a second or two, then either attempt a feeble response or tell them that I it is an excellent question, and that I will think on it and get back to them. If I cant come up with a good enough answer, I usually have to take the question up with my Sifu, to which he replies something so simple I feel stupid again for asking it.

Question: Has this ever happened to you, how do you deal with it, and do you feel that it benefits yourself and your art? (I do btw)

  • What is with all of the junk on the Martial Arts board?

What happened to all of the legitimate questions on the Martial Arts board? All I am seeing lately is people hating on each other and talking bad about some MMA fighters. Is this where Martial Arts is headed? I hope not.

People reading this; please keep your comments and questions to things that are actually revelant to Martial Arts.

It is pointless and, IMO stupid to argue with someone in reguards to something that you watched on TV. Instead of arguing about who did this and who did that and who will beat up who, go actually learn something. I see people saying how this fighter is better than that fighter, and how someone's attack or defense is weak or superior to all but God. Once you go learn something you will find that you do not need other people to bash your head against in order to feel fulfilled in your own opinion.

It is perfectly normal (and healthy) do disagree with someone, but do so without putting down the person's personality.

    Thanks

  • I need to learn Mandarin Chinese, options?

I need to learn Mandarin Chinese, but the local schools do not teach it. What are my options? I know several Chinese people that speak it, but have no time to teach it to me (but I will get to converse with them on occasions)

I've looked at software programs like Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur, and Fluentz. Has anyone used any of these with good results?

  • 1992 24ft Sea Ray 240 Advice?

My wife and I are looking at this 1992 24' Sea Ray 240 Overnighter. The price is to where I can buy it outright without any financing. I am not an avid boater, probably because I dont own one :) I am somewhat familiar with them to know the basics, and this style is what we are looking for.

    My question(s) are:

Has anyone had experience with a boat of this size and style and manufacturer (doesn't have to be 92), and what did you think of the quality and ride?

When buying a boat of this age, what are some things that I should keep an eye out for?

  • Things to look for when buying a used Gooseneck trailer?

I am planning on buying a used 24' flatbed gooseneck. I know that the deck needs replaced. I plan on looking at the wiring, hitch, tires, and springs. Is there anything else that I should keep an eye out for when doing a visual once over?

  • Preying Mantis Kung Fu - Opinions?

I have been teaching Seven Star Preying Mantis Kung Fu for a few years now. I believe it to be the best MA for myself. Certainly not for everyone, but for me it is.

My question is this: How do other upper level Martial Artists view the Mantis System?

    My lineage:

  • Your opinion, training Low Stances in MA?

I think that low stances are essential when teaching a Martial Art.

Especially a low horse stance (upper thighs parallel with the floor)

What do you think about training low stances in your style of MA? Pros/Cons, ect...

  • Traditional Kung Fu Weapons?

I am looking for a place to purchase quality Kung Fu Weapons. Specifically I am looking for a two handed broadsword. I DO NOT want wushu steel. It needs to feel like a weapon, and weight isn't really a problem, since I will use it daily and get used to it.

    Thanks
