  • Axolotl requirements?

My friend wants to get two axolotls and despite research I have not come up with concrete answers so I thought I'd ask on here.

    1. Can you actually house two together?

    2. What is the minimum tank size?

    3. Can they cope with a bare bottom tank or do they need sand?

    4. What do you feed them?

Any other info would be appreciated. Cheers

  • OCD Germ Phobia Advice?

I have OCD with checking and extreme germ phobia. I have always been like this but it has gotten worse as I have gotten older. If someone coughs or sneezes I freak out. I worry when the people I live with are sick because I'm scared of catching what they have and also because I'm scared they have a terrible disease. It's almost like I have hypochondria but for other people. eg. My brother has a couch and I assume it must be tuberculosis or my mum has a cold and I assume it's swine flu. I have a major fear of coughing because I get scared that the person will start coughing up blood. I have to wash my hands obsessively and if I'm not near a sink I have to use hand sanitiser. I am on medication for my other mental illnesses and the doctors wont give me anything specifically for OCD because I am already on five psychiatric medications. I have tried therapy but it doesn't help. It is summer here at the moment and I am dreading winter because of all the colds and flus that will be around. I have tried living on my own before because of this germ phobia but it didn't work out. I am really struggling with it and don't know what else to do. Any help will be appreciated.

  • Am I on too much medication?

I have Bipolar 1, Borderline Personality Disorder, OCD, Social Anxiety and Panic disorder. I saw a psychiatrist yesterday that wasn't my usual one and she thinks I'm on too much medication. I'm on Mirtazipine, lamotrigine, olanzapine, seroquel and clonazepam. Does this seem like too much?

  • Changing filter pads?

I have a filter that is built into the hood. The water goes up an intake tube and is then sprayed over the filter pads by a spray bar. I need to change my filter pad as it is falling apart. I want to leave the old pad in there until enough beneficial bacteria has built up in the new pad. Should I place the new pad on top of the old one or underneath it?

  • Cooling down an aquarium?

So I have asked a similar question before but didn't get a definitive answer. I have a 35 gallon hooded aquarium. I need a way to cool it down during the summer. I don't have a fan that I can blow over the water. This would be a problem anyway as I have a betta that jumps so I can't leave the hood open too long. I can't afford a chiller they are really expensive! Would it make sense to fill ziplock bags with water and freeze them then place them in the aquarium when it gets too hot or will this cool it too quickly? Any suggestions welcome. I do turn off the lights in the tank and pull the curtains in my room when it gets hot.

  • How to keep water temperature down?

So we had a hot day yesterday (I live in NZ so it's summer here!) and my tank temp kept rising because my room gets pretty warm. I closed my curtains to block out the sun and turned of the tank lights but it just kept rising to 30 degrees. What is the warmest a betta can stand and how can I keep the temp down?

  • How to keep bacteria colony alive?

I have a ten gallon tank with a betta that has just finished cycling. Our power is going to go off for a day next week and I'm wondering how to keep my filter media wet. It's one of those filters that's built into the hood and has a big tube that goes down into the tank which sucks water up into the hood which is then sprayed out via a spray bar which is over the filter media. I have ceramic noodles, carbon pad and a plain filter pad. As there will be no water running over it, what's the best way to keep it wet so the bacteria don't die?

  • Another cycling question?

I have a betta in a 10gallon and it's been cycling for 6 weeks. My readins over the past five days have been 0.25 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 0 nitrate. I'm a bit confused about two things. 1. The ammonia. I think my test kit must be faulty as it never shows zero ammonia even after a water change and adding prime. It also says my tap water is 0.25 which is highly unlikely as our water comes from aquifers and isn't treated at all. 2. The nitrates. I used to have this same problem of zero nitrates in tanks in the past. My tank is quite heavily planted, could the nitrate be zero as the plants are using it? I had a rise in ammonia and a rise in nitrites before the levels fell back to what they are now. Is my tank cycled?

  • I have a few questions about cycling?

I have a 10 gallon tank with a 3 month old betta in it. The tank has been cycling for almost 6 weeks. I do daily water changes (20%) and add prime at each water change. Now for the questions: 1. Am I slowing down the cycle by doing daily water changes? 2. Am I starving the bacteria colony by adding prime as it detoxifies ammonia? 3. How will I know when my tank is cycled as the prime detoxifies the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates so I can't get a proper reading? Thanks

  • Betta injury and Stress Coat?

My 2 and 1/2 month old betta has a wound on it's head. I think it might have got it fighting over food with my cories (have sold them now). My tank is still cycling so I do daily water changes and use Prime as my water conditioner. I'm just wanting to know if it's safe to add stress coat as well because it is also a water conditioner but I want to use it for it's healing properties.

  • Young male betta feeding question?

My betta is about 10 weeks old. I feed him pellets once a day but he always goes after my cories sinking tablets. Should I be feeding him more because he's still growing? I've had adult bettas in the past and it was a struggle to get them to eat at all! I don't want to overfeed but he's just hungry all the time.

  • Feeding time problems?

I have a male betta and three bronze cories in a 10gallon tank. I feed my betta pellets and he eats all of them so there is never any left over. I've been trying to feed my cories half a sinking tablet a day but it takes them so long to find it that the betta gets in first. I don't want my betta overfed so how do I stop him stealing their food so he doesn't overeat and so the cories actually get a chance at it?

  • Cycling tank and prime usage?

I am cycling a tank that already has fish in it (couldn't be avoided). I do a water change every second day. I add 1ml of Seachem Prime everyday, is this a bad idea? It says it's ok to use to control ammonia and nitrite levels during cycling so I thought it would be ok, but an answer to another question said it's not ok.

  • My cory is adddicted to prime?

I have a betta and three bronze cories in a cycling tank. I know, fishless is best but I got them as a gift. Anyway, they are all doing fine except one. I am using prime to keep the ammonia and nitirites down and it is working. I add 1ml in the morning and they all swim around normally. Then about an hour later, my smallest cory starts just sitting on the ground barely moving. I tested the water parameters and they are fine. I decided to add a bit more prime just in case and he springs to life again! This has happened several times now and I don't want to overdose them on the prime. Why is this happening?

  • How long to treat ich for?

My cories that I got yesterday have developed ich (not going back to that pet store) and I'm treating with seachem paraguard. It says to treat daily as required. How long should I use it for? Just until the spots disappear or longer than that?

    3 AnswersFish9 years ago
  • A question about Seachem Paraguard?

Can I use this product with bronze cories in the tank? It's used to treat ich etc.

  • Clonazepam (klonopin) overdose?

I took 50 clonazepam (klonopin) yesterday and went to the hospital and everything and they gave me fluids but it didn't make me the slightest bit tired or sleepy. I've been taking 1mg a day for years, am I that tolerant to it that it had no effect?

  • Strange looking algae?

In my newish tank I have this strange algae. It's little dots of white covering the plants etc. Is this algae or should I be concerned? I have been using prime so I wondered if it was from that? I'm pretty sure it's not snail eggs, there's too much of it and it's widespread .

  • Why wont my tank cycle?

I'm doing a 'fish in cycle' with a 10 week old betta (not ideal I know but we didn't have much choice) and the tank isn't cycling at all. He eats all his food so there's no leftovers to create ammonia and he's only small so I'm guessing he's not producing enough waste to get things going. Is this normal? Will the tank start to cycle once he gets bigger? I'm keeping up with water changes every week anyway and I have live plants. What's the deal?
