  • My horse is always mad in the field?

    Hi,

So at my new yard we have no school, just a field to ride in and a busy road out the front.

My horse has always been taught (from previous owners) that fields are for galloping/cantering/jumping. Therefore, whenever I ride him in the field he just thinks we're going to canter and gallop everywhere. I've been taking him in the field and just trotting/walking him and trying to teach him to stay on the bit but he just wants to run! We alternate canter/trotting sessions (one day we'll canter, the next we'll trot etc.) but the problem isn't going.

It's gotten so bad that when in the field last week Charlie bronched down the one side and made himself lame.

How do I teach him that we need to work in the field and it's not just for fun? I am able to bring him back (eventually) but how do I make him listen to me all the time and know that we don't always play in the field?

Thank you so much, all responses are greatly appreciated
