  • ok this is the last time i'm asking this. Do u like my short story 4 language class i edited it 4 da 1000 time

    Life is Not a Movie

“That child is pure evil! I had just gone to put together a scrapbook of our vacation photos and noticed someone cut my face out of all the pictures. Hmm I wonder who that could have been” Miranda asked sarcastically. “Why would she do something so rude? I’m telling you, she is EVIL!”

“Don’t talk about Addie like that! She’s fine the way she is. She is just mad that you are now in the picture so soon and the fact that we just got married after her mom’s death. I mean, her mom did just die from cancer. I’m sure it’s pretty hard on her.”

I was listening in from the hallway; I felt my cheeks burning with fury, my eyes welling with tears. That evil woman, I thought. I ran through the kitchen with tears streaming down my face, like a river. My dad and Miranda stopped arguing as soon as they noticed I had heard them.

My dad was right, I am mad that they got married so soon. I only cut her face from the pictures, because she’s trying to take the place of my mom, plus she yells at me all the time. She barely knows me. I didn’t like her from the start, and I could tell she despised me. I wonder what my father sees in her, besides her looks. Miranda is a tall, thin brunette with long, curly eyelashes. She is nothing like my mom, not to mention being much younger that my dad, probably young enough to be my older sister. She isn’t very smart, either. It seems like the only thing she knows is how to make a child very angry. She has always blamed me for everything that goes wrong. She and my dad only dated for a few months before they got married. I never wanted to see or talk to her ever again, but for my father’s sake, I needed to find common ground with her.

My first step was to find out something that we are both interested in. DANG! That meant I had to talk to her. What was I going to say? I’m so afraid to approach her; she might get mad and storm off. She likes going to the movies, maybe we could go see one. Okay, take a deep breath, you can do this. Take a deep breath, Addie, I kept saying to myself. I came out of the bathroom with my face flushed, eyes scared, but yet I had a feeling that maybe this was my chance to make things right.

“Miranda, do you want to go to the movies, and maybe get ice cream afterwards?”

“Ok. Yeah, that sounds good,” said Miranda, confused.

For once we are talking, and it wasn’t her yelling at me! We were actually getting along. We left the house at three o’clock in the afternoon heading towards Main Street. The traffic was like a stampede of elephants coming through town. There were horns going off like crazy, and fresh skid marks engraved into the black, twisty off-ramp. There were no parking spots near the movies, so we had to park two blocks away. Finally, we got to the theatre, but the line was so long, it took us twenty minutes to get a ticket.

When we got up to the front of the line, we had totally forgotten what movie we wanted to see. The people behind us were yelling all sorts of things that I couldn’t make out, but I knew they were in a hurry to get into the theatre.

“Addie, do you want to see the movie, ‘P.S. I Love You’?” she whispered to me.

“Yeah, that’s what I was thinking! It’s like you are reading my mind,” I said.

“Okay, then two tickets for ‘P.S. I Love You’,” she told the cashier.

Miranda and I came out of the movie theatres in tears. We both felt that was the best movie we had ever seen. After the movie, we went to get ice cream at Cold Stone’s. We had talked about my mom for a long time, almost until closing. Talking about my memories of mom didn’t make me cry at all. It actually made me feel really good to let it all out.

We arrived home about 9:00. My dad was watching football, as usual. He saw us talking and was in awe. At first, I didn’t know what he was staring at, and then I realized he was staring at Miranda and me. It really wasn’t that often we got along, even for a second.

“Hey, what’s up?” dad questioned. “Would one of you ladies like to tell me what’s going on?”

“Well, honey, Addie and I went to the movies and talked about a lot of stuff, and, well, I guess we are getting along.”

“WOW! That is so great!” my dad said, surprised.

“Hey, dad, when’s dinner?” I asked.

“About thirty minutes. Go into the living room, and watch T.V. or something.”

After we ate our chicken and mashed potatoes, we had a delicious wedge of triple chocolate fudgy monkey cake. For once, the dinner table wasn’t quiet. Instead of only Miranda and dad talking, it was her and me that were talking the most, as my dad stuffed his face with food. We talked about school, vacations that we wanted to go on, and about the movie we just saw. That movie was amazing. When you watch it, you feel like there is a hurricane of emotions going through your head. From the way we described the movie, dad mentioned that he might want even want to go see it.

Everyday was a little brighter between Miranda and me. She started taking me to school and picking me up. Softball season started, and every time it was my turn to bat, Miranda cheered for me the loudest. I could tell that we were becoming great friends. What happened with this family, I thought? I am really not sure; all I know is that we all loved each other. It took a really long time for Miranda and me to completely understand each other, but eventually we became very close. She even told me that I could start calling her “mom.” That was a HUGE step for me; instead of calling her a “witch,” I could call her “mom.” It feels good to have a “mom” again.

Three weeks later, things were still on track. We were bonding more than ever. After our new evening routine of dinner and chit-chat, it was 11 p.m., and, unfortunately my bedtime. The family exchanged “goodnights” and went to sleep.

“Night mom. Night dad. Love you guys.”

“Goodnight, Addie. It is really late, so please go to sleep. You have school tomorrow, remember that,” called out my dad from his room.

“Goodnight, Addie. I love you, too,” added Miranda.

Well, it’s been a couple of months, and it is finally settling in. We have now become the happy family we have always wanted. I guess everything worked out, and it was all because I dared to make the first step on initiating a healthy relationship with Miranda.

One problem was that it took a while for Miranda and me to completely understand each other, but eventually we became very close. She even told me that I could call her mom. That was a HUGE step from calling her a witch to calling her mom. It feels good to have a real mom.

It was 11 pm and unfortunately my bedtime. The family exchanged “Goodnights” and went to sleep.

“Night mom. Night dad. Love you guys

“Goodnight Addie. It is really late so please go to sleep. You have school tomorrow, remember that.” shrieked my dad from his room.

“Goodnight Addie. I love you too.” added Miranda.

From that moment on we have been the happy family my dad had always wanted. I guess everything worked out and it was all because I dared to make the first step on making a healthy relationship with Miranda.
