  • Algebra: Exponents first, or parentheses?

Hey guys, I have encountered a question here, and I have gotten two answers out of it, that cannot be. So I seek your advice.

    Question:

    (3x^4y^5z^7)^5 / (-3x^3yz^4)^7

Could someone confirm my final answer please.

    (3x^4y^5z^7)^5 / (-3x^3yz^4)^7

    = 3^5x^20y^25z^35 / -3^7x^21y^7z^28

    = -3^-2x^-1y^18z^7

    = (1/-3^2)(1/x)(y^18/1)(z^7/1)

    = y^18z^7 / 9x

  • Simplify or exponents first?

Hey guys, I have encountered a question here, and I have gotten two answers out of it, that cannot be. So I seek your advice.

    Question:

    (3x^4y^5z^7)^5 / (-3x^3yz^4)^7

I've read that I need to do the parenthesis first (ie. order of operations), in this case, to simplify.

    Which would give me this..

    (3x^4y^5z^7)^5 / (-3x^3yz^4)^7

    = (xy^4z^3)^5 / (-1)^7

    = x^5y^20z^15 / -1

Or do I expand the exponents first, giving me:

    (3x^4y^5z^7)^5 / (-3x^3yz^4)^7

    = 3^5x^20y^25z^35 / -3^7x^21y^7z^28

    = -3^-2x^-1y^18z^7

    = (1/-3^2)(1/x)(y^18/1)(z^7/1)

    = y^18z^7 / 9x

  • Return to High School or Towards University..?

    I really need some assistance.

Here's some history on my education/employment and present situation in order:

Very poor high school grades (Severe family issues/wrong crowd)

    College Diploma attained, Computer Technician

Contract job as Technical Support Analyst and Operation Systems for one year. (paid flights, expense card, provide support for eastern region employees (~1000) and update office networks and systems

Automotive Assembly Associate for top manufacturer.

Here are some relevant hobbies of mine:

Designing, building and installing sound stages for home and automobiles. (Enclosures, wiring, tuning)

Working on cars. (maintenance, modifications, performance)

I've always found technical research, design and implementation quite comforting. I'm usually educating myself via books and internet in my past time.

However, at the age of 24. My job as an assembly worker is not very satisfying, and I know that I am more than capable of being more productive. I guess it's the pay which has kept me where I am for the last 3 years but certainly do not want to make a career out of it.

My options now are to open my own business or go back to school.

I am eligible in my situation and ready to commit and invest my time and money into higher education for the next few years and return to school.

I applied to a university this year, and got rejected.

    My question is as follows.

I feel that the field of engineering (either manufacturing or mechanical) especially in the automotive sector is what I would enjoy doing, but most jobs in this field require a P.Eng License or B.Sc. Degree.

    Should I:

Increase my High School marks and try University again.

Go to College and obtain a 3 year advanced diploma

and if so, would it make it more plausible for me to enter into a degree program afterward?

    Thanks.
